Hey This is going to be my first SXSW. I was wondering where there is a good how to do SXSW list, that answer questions such as “Do I need to buy the badge or just buy tickets to select shows?” “Is a car needed to get from show to show, or can you walk?” Any help is greatly appreciated!
You can easily walk from club to club in Austin, TX. You don’t need a car at all. If you are in hurry you can always take the bus.
Hey Margot that’s not a bad idea–someone should write a “how to” guide for SXSW. Sorta like the DisneyWorld tourist tome…
Badge, wristband or door? If you are in the “industry” you will probably want to spring for a badge–that assures that you will get into any show and you can rub elbows with the stars, or at least their sleazy Management. Prices for the whole badge enchilada go up into the $500’s I think–you can check at the site. Depending on whether you go every night and/or are a “hopper” you could save by getting either the wristband or do the door charges. Wristbands will probably cost about $135 this year–at leat when they first come out here in Austin. The first year I attended, I paid at the door as I went. I didn’t go out every night and some of the showcases kept me at one club all night, so I did okay that year. The next year I did the door again and was extremely frustrated–I wanted to hop from club to club and the accumulating door charges made me anxious. The wristband is your best choice if you are serious about this at all. With wristbands I’ve never missed a show I wanted to see as long as I got there early enough (like arriving one show earlier than your target). Also the day parties will be MORE accessible having a wristband (than nothing at all), but good luck hearing about all but the larger ones on Friday and Saturday! You need to learn about the day parties…
Club hopping (clopping?). Around downtown you can walk from club to club, but there are always a few venues away from downtown that, damnit, have a band I HAVE to see (like the auditorium on UT campus). You could drive, take a regular taxi, or take a bus for these occasions. I would NOT recommend the buses based on experience last year–I found the buses way too off-schedule to successfully hop in the twenty-odd minutes between gigs. For the longer downtown moves (like from anywhere on Red River St to say, Tambaleo’s) I like the bicycle taxis (rickshaws?)–especially those piloted by young ladies. If you are a straight lady yourself there are a greater number of male pedallers. They work for tips only–I think for legal/insurance/ordinance reasons. They work hard and have always gotten me there in time, so always I tip them the equivalent of a regular taxi fare.
If you are a visitor to Austin and the weather is good I would strongly recommend doing something outdoors and physical during the early daytime–just so your memories of Austin won’t be only of dark nightclubs and strange people roaming the streets at 2 am. We have some beautiful hikes to clear water streams with swimming holes for one thing.
Good luck.

from the not so well know artsists from list so far i’d recommend:
Jose’ Gonzalez – a great singer-songrwriter; half-Swedish, half-Argentinian
Serene Maneesh from Norway – the new My Bloody Valentine
The Boy Least Likely To – play wonderfil indie-pop
Clor are the new Devo
In addition to all the bands listed, our band, The Minni-Thins will be playing. We’re a loud indie rock band from the Northern Kentucky side of Cincinnati. We found out we got in to SXSW a month ago, but only found your site tonight. We’re extremely excited. You can hear some of our music at: http://www.minnithins.com/discography
