Cleveland’s Exit Stencil Records are on a bit of a roll lately. I wrote about one of their bands a few weeks ago, Hot Cha Cha, and the label was recently profiled in CMJ. On top of that, the new album (Take Shape) they’ve released by The Dreadful Yawns is something I can’t seem to stop playing. Here’s two songs from it:
MP3: Kill Me Now
MP3: Expecting Rain

For the fifth year Cringe and Donewaiting.com are organizing the Band Merch Booth at Comfest. Pat Radio is also helping us a lot this year, too. If you can volunteer at the booth for a few hours, please email me (rduffy at gmail.com) or contact Treadway at info at cringe.com with your availability.
Work 3 hour shifts and get a Comfest t-shirt. Tokens given out after every hour worked for booze and food consumption. Our days begin around 10:30ish each morning and end around when the music ends each day. Low key, high excitement.
Like previous years, our message board is going a bit loopy over the festival.

Last month, Bizzy Bone made his Columbus rounds promoting his new album, A Song For You. The Thuggish-Ruggish Bustown native did an instore signing at my workplace Magnolia Thunderpussy, before doing the club thing at Major Woodys. Dood was hella cool, down-to earth, friendly and charismatic. It was a trip to watch Bizzy rap along with the music while chatting people up.
Copywrite was in the store today dropping off some of his mix cds and he put me on to this you tube footie of Bizzy’s Columbus escapades.
Peep Big Shows Car Shows from Weed Steeler getting his skateboard singed by Bizzy. You can’t miss me looking corny and fat in the background in the Vomitrocity tee during the instore. The Major Woody’s footie is cool cause it has the much beleaguered Bizzy getting treated like the star that he is from the hometown crowd.

Last month’s Iron Man was the seventeenth feature film based on a Marvel Comics superhero since 1998’s Blade kicked off the current superhero movie cycle. Of those seventeen, none divided critics, movie-goers or fans as sharply as Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk.
It was by far the artiest and most experimental of them all, but something of a mixed bag—a well-acted, compelling melodrama with an all-special effect superhero that looked embarrassingly unconvincing, a badly botched ending and far too little smashing.
Which perhaps explains why The Incredible Hulk falls somewhere between a remake and a sequel, but far closer to the latter than a former. The entire cast is different, the creators are all different and the only reoccurring characters are the three principle ones. The origin of the Hulk, that which Lee occupied himself with for almost two hours before getting to the smashing, is told here in a minute or two, as flashes of information occurring behind the title sequence.
That’s how badly director Louis Leterrier (a disciple of Luc Besson whose filmography consists of action movies Danny The Dog and the Transporters) wants to make sure this Hulk movie delivers what the last withheld. (more…)

MP3: At Your Death by Noa Babayof
For some reason, Israeli musician Noa Babayof reminds me of The Black Swans. I think it has a lot to do with her delivery - deep, precise, and heavy enough to knock you over while retaining a simple beauty.
The other reason she reminds me of The Black Swans is the music is something you really need to pay attention to. At first listen, you might be a little confused. Am I listening to classical music? Folk? Israeli Pop Opera? But after you settle down with it, everything is pleasantly revealed.
Download the MP3 linked above and click here to see dates of her upcoming tour.

MP3: Colette by Langhorne Slim
When trying to choose an MP3 to include in this post, I realized I really like just about every song on the latest album by Langhorne Slim. I settled on one of my favorites, (linked above), but you can find some more to download over on ye Olde Hype Machine.
The band is coming to Ruby Tuesdays in Columbus on Saturday, June 21, courtesy of Benco Presents. We’re giving away a pair of tickets. To be entered to win, send a blank e-mail to wintix@donewaiting.com with the subject LANGHORNE. A random winner will be chosen June 19.
Megan Palmer is opening the show.

Columbus music writer Stephen Slaybaugh has launched The Agit Reader, a new site featuring music reviews, interviews, news, and columns.
The Agit Reader is a weekly webzine with new content published daily (Monday to Friday). We are NOT a blog (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

The flyer above is for an artshow @ Sporeprint at 172 E. 5th Ave during Gallery Hop on Saturday, June 7th from 6 to 11. Artists showing include Johnny Rattail, Lisa Dorazewski, Andy Plank, Randy Hunter, Stacie Sells, Ben Scarbro, Jimi baby, Nicole Senter, and Angry Andy.
But I am going up there to get a copy of Jimi Payne’s “Punk Zine”. Jimi Payne has been pretty active throwing DIY shows at the Monster House and works at the Wexner bookstore.
His zine is loosely themed around the history of punk in Columbus but also includes interviews with local artists and critical writing dealing with the political economy of independent culture. Features interviews with people like Geoff Hing of Defiance, Ohio, Jimmy Buttons, Phonzie Davis, Matt Reber of New Bomb Turks, and Anne Elizabeth Moore.
I spoke with Jimi about “Punk Zine” at 28 Windows last weekend. He said something to effect that he is a younger cat, and he looks at all these people as the roots of “Punk” in Columbus as we know it. But it was interesting for him to find out that the New Bomb Turks world and the Neil House world didn’t really interact or even like each other.
I haven’t seen the zine. But that insight alone has me heading up to the Sporeprint show to get a copy.

Hello friends, I’d like to talk today about annoying lyrics. You know, those lyrical flubs that stick in your craw and you wish you had a magic marker that you could just write on the CD and change. As the frontman and lyricist in a failed New Jersey bar band, I, Jim Teacher, am overqualified to speak on this egregious subject.
For example, Iggy must have thought he hit a home run with “Search & Destroy,” right? Wrong. “I’m a runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb.” Not bad, I guess–if you’re a three-year-old raised without language. Iggy could’ve reached a little and made it “I’m a runaway son from the nuclear playground.” Whoa, I just blew my own mind.
See? One wrong lyrical turn can ruin Jim Teacher’s entire high school experience. So why do they (the guys who write lyrics) do it again, and again…and again?
I’m not going to even attempt to answer that philosophical quandary. Instead, I’ll focus my efforts on bitching about specific cases of lyrical neglect.
First up: The Killers in that song where they sing about the guy’s uncle who does cocaine. To start off with, this guy, Brandon Flowers or whatever his name is, isn’t half-bad in terms of lyrics. Now I was predisposed to hate this band because…well, look, they look like a bunch of pussies, but even Jim Teacher isn’t impervious to the impeccable pop hooks. These fucks wore me down, especially since my wife wouldn’t remove the CD from the car and, as we all know, that’s not the man’s job. So I listened and listened. (more…)

We are now only two weeks away from Terrastock 7, to be held in Louisville, KY, and it looks like Donewaiting has become the unofficial web home for previewing the event. So I’m here today persuade all of you who are on the fence about this great festival. At my count at least 37 bands from across the globe will be performing over the course of four days, June 19th-22nd. Full festival passes are still available and individual days are only $25 per day. It looks like there are a variety of lodging options out there too. Louisville is around a three hour drive from Columbus and less than two from Cincinnati and Indianapolis, so even a day-trip is within reason.
Rumors about special collaborations are beginning to pop up, and the one that has me really excited is the idea of Kawabata Makoto of thee most prolific Acid Mothers Temple sitting in with Louisville’s hometown heroes Sapat (pictured above). (more…)
