For $5 You Can Get The New Walkmen Album + Fight Cancer

July 30, 2008 – 12:14 pm | Written by Robert Duffy

MP3: In the New Year by The Walkmen

If you read more than two music blogs then you probably already know that The Walkmen are offering their new album, You and Me, for only $5 via Amie St. What makes this worth writing about is all the proceeds of the purchase goes towards a charity of the band’s choice.

“All donations go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of Luca Vasallo, a friend to the band and a current patient who is seven months old and doing a great job fighting a very difficult disease. This is a very good organization that certainly deserves the attention.”

Click here to purchase the album.

The band is heading out on tour in August, including a stop in Columbus.

Sweatin Becomes Weekly. Moves To Axis

July 29, 2008 – 4:29 am | Written by Wes Flexner

3CB Marty laced this gif to announce that Sweatin is making a serious power move. Starting August 7th, Scotty & co. are moving it to spacious Axis. They are also turning it into a weekly. Every Thursday expect Electro, Blog Bmore, House, and anything else that should be played at the cities’ premier modern disco dance party.

If you have been to a Sweatin party, then you know the only problem is the shit is dumb crowded. So that problem is solved. No more 45 minute waits to get in the door.

Envelope Is Not A Coward:Pt 1-Sharkbolt Release Party

July 28, 2008 – 4:19 am | Written by Wes Flexner

Photos by DKLINE

Columbus rapper Envelope dropped a cd recently called Sharkbolt. You should buy it. It’s not a very costly entertainment expense. The theme of the album is that as long as you do drugs, or drink you will be able to bond with your friends. 17 dollars should get you a cd, a square meal, and a 40. Does 30 dollars still get you a ten strip these days?

One day Envelope and I went and saw Mick Boogie at Boma. After the show, I left with Thought Set to go to Cashola’s house. Tony went elsewhereee.

On getting back to the Washington Beach area, our party remained in the road because because Thought Set and Cashola were sparking an L on the corner of Medary and ?????. (Even though I don’t smoke weed, I still can’t recall the intersection.) My completely ancient ringtone that has Jim Jones yelling at me to “pick up the phone stupid” screamed on me at about 3:45 am . After answering my phone to quiet the Capo, on other end was an angry Envelope wanting us to come help him fight. Weed makes people peaceful we didn’t make it there. So Envelope came to us.

Envelope shows up with a bloody hand from punching out a car window. He was obviously upset, so Cashola goes inside his home and finds a computer to break in the residential area’s street. (more…)

Javelins

July 24, 2008 – 12:36 pm | Written by Robert Duffy

I am a pretty big fan of Thunderbirds are Now! I love their records, but their live show is something not to miss. So I was excited when I got an e-mail today about Javelins, a band that features Matt and Julian from Thunderbirds.

“Heavy Meadows” is their new album and this is the first MP3 from the record. I’ve played it about 10 times since getting it today, can’t wait to hear the rest of it.

Between this and The Hard Lessons, are all of my new favorite bands going to come from Michigan?

Donewaiting.com Presents Alina Simone + Jerry DeCicca (Black Swans) Wednesday

July 22, 2008 – 8:49 am | Written by Robert Duffy

MP3: Half My Kingdom by Alina Simone

One of my favorite parts of SXSW this year was seeing Alina Simone. I’m super excited to be hosting her show here in Columbus tomorrow at the Surly Girl Saloon. Music starts promptly at 9PM and the show is free.

Joining the show will be dear friend Jerry DeCicca, known to most as the man behind The Black Swans. This is going to be a great night of music and I hope you can be there.

Alina was recently on NPR. And in The Other Paper.

Copywrite on The Wake-Up Show

July 18, 2008 – 5:51 pm | Written by Wes Flexner YouTube Preview Image

Copywrite. The second he does something bizarre, like his pill enduced on-stage freak-out at the Catalyst release show, not the first episode that makes you shake your head in confusion, laughter and sadness; he follows everything up with  appearing on the Legendary Bay Area program, The Wake-Up Show. I would say Allah Bless Pete Nelson. But nothing is that simple. Dood can rap.

Copywrite will perform with J-Rawls &  Guilty Simpson @ Skullys Music DIner, August 29th.

M.O.P. Hits Columbus In One Week

July 16, 2008 – 1:31 am | Written by Wes Flexner YouTube Preview Image

Ante Up!!! M.O.P. at Skullys…Oops…No question. RSVP. This is pretty crucial to Columbus Hip Hop and Columbus Hardcore. Few crews are more popular in these parts than the World Famous Brooklyn Firing Squad. This may be bigger than if Dipset was playing at Skullys. Too bad Killed In Action isn’t opening. I will be posting videos every day until the show.

Sebastian Bach on tour with Poison

July 15, 2008 – 11:25 pm | Written by Chip Midnight

Baz and Rob DeLuca

My birthday was yesterday. I didn’t celebrate. My real present came Sunday night courtesy of Rob DeLuca, bassist for Sebastian Bach’s band, who hooked me up with killer seats for the Poison/Dokken/Sebastian Bach show at The Schott in Columbus. I’ve been a fan(atic) of DeLuca’s since his days slinging bass for Spread Eagle and though the band never blew up the way they should have, I still tell people about driving DeLuca and singer Ray West to a party in Akron after a Spread Eagle show at the Akron Agora in ‘90 or ‘91.

If you thinking about checking out one of the upcoming shows - there are still a month and a half of dates left - do yourself a HUGE favor and get your ass to the arena early to check out Baz and his band tear things up (here’s my review of the Columbus show).

After the jump … Rob DeLuca answers some questions I sent him via email on an off day on the tour.

Gnarls Barkley in Columbus

July 12, 2008 – 10:23 am | Written by Robert Duffy

Just announced: Gnarls Barkey is coming to Newport Music Hall in Columbus on Friday, August 1. Buy tickets here.

Sort of weird for them to be playing the smaller Newport, but Flogging Molly is already scheduled at Promowest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see these two shows switched closer to the event, but you never know..
