Sounds like maybe missing richards was out of Howson's control. Hell, he was offering 3 dudes for him- fritche, brule, and someone else. It also sounds like everything was on hold for the Richards deal, and by the time they found out that wasn't going through, there wasn't a lot of time to act. Or, they just decided to clean house and rebuild with salary cap space. But seriously, what high end free agents are going to come to columbus this summer? we're just gonna get another round of anson carters.

totally. there's nothing that happened today that will help the CBJs go from 11th to 8th place. it hurts, in fact. so we wait until 2009 to see the fruits of this 'trade'. My question is this- how much longer will fans continue to by tickets to watch an unsuccessful team? will there be team here in 2009?

as an aside, I'll watch a shitty team play for 15 bucks (i'm lookin' at you columbus crew), but I ain't payin' $50 to see a shitty team lose. somethings gotta change.

A first round selection for Footer = we win
Getting rid of Federov's contract and getting a second round prospect = we win
Forcing the younger guys to step it up and become leaders right now = we win
Not giving up Leclaire or Mason to get Richards = we win
Not getting Richards = sucks though

Overall, not a loss on trade day. We will (or won't) make the playoffs with or without those two guys, our destiny certainly doesn't ride with them!!!

And, foto looks to be right with the "behind the scenes scoop", 'ole Footer's lookin a lil skeezy now. good riddance. I said 3 months ago that I'd sign him for 2 more years at about $2M per, but anything over that and he's overpaid. I'm surprised the CBJ were offering $3.5M....

They may actually overpay for him, just for the hometown status...but nowhere near what he was offered here.

My hope is that San Jose meets the Avalanche in the playoffs. I'm betting that somewhere in a best-of-7 series Jody Shelley lays the wood into ol' # 52.
