so here's the deal:
i'm fucking sick of rock bands rehashing '80's new wave/dance music. guitars were meant to be murder weapons, not fashion accessories. even "punk" has become mainstream pop music for high school proms. don't even get me started on the word "indie..."
i play the guitar: not tamely strumming jangle-pop, not wrenching out "post-epic-emo-core", not standing idly by while a cocaine-riddled synth freak drives the song. i play the guitar like alex rodriguez hits a baseball - with power, confidence, and a 30% success rate (ok, i'm not a hall of famer like a-rod, but i'm pretty reliable, like a gary sheffield or travis hafner). bonus points to you if you get the baseball jokes.
i'm looking to start a band that's not afraid to play guitar rock. i need a drummer that hits hard and can do a lot with a little - no neil peart or mike portnoy disciples. i need a bass player that thinks beyond roots, but can still anchor a song down when necessary. i need another guitar player who likes weird parts and simple parts equally, and can solo (tastefully). it wouldn't hurt if any of these players could sing and/or write songs, but it's not absolutely necessary.
most important part: except when i get riled up about the abundance of suck-tastic music, i'm a pretty laid-back guy. rock star ego and the associated trappings and bullshit are absolutely, 100% forbidden. this is not a band that is going to "make it." at best, we'll practice once a week, play in columbus once a month, and play out of town once a month, at least for the next year or so. i have no desire to quit my job to play in band, though i will (and i'd hope other band members would) take an occasional half-day off to facilitate a good situation (mid-week show, out-of-town road trip, studio time, etc.).
to give you a crystal clear idea what kind of music i'm talking about, here's a mix i made while writing this up:
Pixies - "Dead" - Doolittle
Archers Of Loaf - "Harnessed In Slums" - Vee Vee
Silkworm - "Quicksand" - Firewater
The Wrens - "Rest Your Head" - Secaucus
Les Savy Fav - "Blackouts" - 3/5
Fugazi - "Caustic Acrostic" - End Hits
Burning Airlines - "Outside The Aviary" - Identikit
White Octave - "Animal Chin" - Menergy
Mclusky - "Day of the Deadringers" - Mclusky Do Dallas
The Hold Steady - "Cattle & The Creeping Things" - Separation Sunday
Shellac - "Steady As She Goes" - Excellent Italian Greyhound
Dinosaur Jr. - "Been There All The Time" - Beyond
please don't get in touch with me if you like bands that intentionally misspell their names. we will not get along musically, i promise.
i play guitar/sing/write songs for that hardly ever plays anymore, and i play guitar for . click those links if you want to get a feel for what i like. send me a PM if you're interested...
