While I am appalled by the persistent consumption (and resulting pollution) of petroleum, I am not convinced that "the battery" is the answer. If every automobile had the number of batteries required to power them succesfully, we would soon run into a major disposal problem. Also, you still have to charge those batteries, and currently that means coal.
