The Smashing Pumpkins’ Slow Descent Into Hell (not in a good way) - Represented on a Scale of 1-10

Gish – 7
Siamese Dream – 9.5
Pisces Iscariot – 8
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness – 10
Aeroplane Flies High – 9
Adore – 6
Machina – 7
Machina Tour, Hara Arena 4/21/00 – 9.5
Machina II – 2
Rotten Apples – 5
(Future Embrace – 3)
Zeitgeist – 4
20th Anniversary Tour, Newport 10/31/08 - 1

I've missed the Pumpkins play live the last couple of times I had an opportunity to see them because I was less than impressed with recent releases. But hearing that they were embarking on a 20th Anniversary Tour I thought "this sounds like they are planning to celebrate their past accomplishments and strong song catalog". No such luck

I am no longer a Billy Corgan fan and now I need a new username.

so how are you guys feeling about that AC/DC show in a couple weeks?

between rock in a hard place and pump i saw aerosmith at least a half dozen times, and knew deep down in my soul that's EXACTLY what rockandroll should be like. but pump was also the album that let me know that i'd NEVER bother listening to another of their albums again, and it'd just be a letdown to see them again.

if they just promised me there'd be no songs from like '86-forward, i'd pay more money than i ever have to see a concert. but other than that, no thanks . . .

but not even if ac/dc personally asked me to make up the setlist would i pay to see them again. why the hell would i want to hear all those amazing bon scott songs ruined by grampa marlboro-carton? god, his voice just sucks. and it always has. . .

Exactly. Fuck that asshole and fuck anyone who went to this show expecting anything other than the aural equivalent of an uncomfortable, unsuccessful enema. No offense. The one and only time I saw Smashing Pumpkins (Lollapalooza 1994), I left after hearing only one song. It was sordid and stupid, and I haven't given that douchebag a dime of my money since then.

Yep, same thing with me -- except I stayed through that stupid performance 'till the bitter end (the better end being, in this case, midway through Corgan's too-long-by-several-minutes guitar solo during the last song). Ugh. I was neutral about the band before that, but was driven to full-fledged hatred by the end.

from Stereogum.com

Quote:
Reviews of the Smashing Pumpkins' two night stand in NYC last week haven't been kind. "Things quickly fell off a cliff, bogged down by tuneless dirges like the reworked version of 'Heavy Metal Machine' and a noisy, directionless cover of Pink Floyd's 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,' said Rolling Stone. Matthew Perpetua of Fluxblog agrees those two tunes were "flat-out awful" and felt the encore ("a song that mixes disingenuous hippy-dippy 'everyone is beautiful!' lyrics with improvised sarcastic rants that outright diss the city you're playing in, mock the fans for paying to see your band, and tell your visibly disappointed audience that you'll see them in hell") was "full-on douche-tastic passive-aggression." And that was only night one.

The next day, Billy acknowledged the elephant in the theater by inviting a disgruntled attendee of Thursday night's show onstage. "Last night's show fucking sucked," the kid complained. "We're all good," offered Billy, adding this juvenile rejoinder after the fan exited the stage: "By the way, I like that song you wrote -- 'Take Your Dick Out Of My Ass And Stick It In My Mouth.' It was a big hit in Europe." Ha ha. Ha? Video of the exchange below.

that's funny. my wife used to work at 700 club, if you remember those days. the pumpkins played there and i kinda had free reign of the place.. just cause i knew everyone. i hung out with them for about a half hour.. my impressions: iah was cool as hell and really funny. kinda dude you'd love to hang with. d'arcy was really cool too. she offered to smoke weed w/me. i accepted though i hate smoking weed. she talked me into it...hard to turn her down. jimmy.. i don't know. he wasn't there for the most part. corgan? a total ass. he kept saying how the bar sucked and he'd love to burn the place down. i think he assumed i would care that he said that? i don't know cause every time he dogged 700 club he glared at me. like i worked there or really gave a shit... of course i didn't, but what the hell? why would he even say shit like that? the place was packed and he was treated really well.. i just assumed he was dickhead rock star.

You beat me to posting that pitchfork video, cdubya.

I don't think there's any question that Corgan's new material falls far below his earlier stuff...but this whole Pumpkins backlash is whiny bullshit.

Especially, with some of you posting your experiences about semi-meeting Corgan in some bar. It's funny...all of you who met him for a couple minutes and think he's a dick don't seem to like his music all that much either. Maybe one of your opinions affects the other?? And so what if Iha and Wretzky were nice to you at a fucking bar? It's a bar. I don't make any assumptions on anyone's character at a bar of all places. In fact, alot of people that were friendly to me one night end up being assholes later on...and vice versa.

The Pumpkins have every right to play whatever the hell they want. A true testament to Corgan's character will be to see what happens if he loses half his fanbase and is relegated to being just another rock band. Does he keep making music? Does he go off on even weirder tangents than in the above video? It'll show if he has good intentions or not.

Corgan definitely didn't do himself any favors by having that 9 minutes bitchfest...but regardless, fuck that pitckfork guy who wrote that blurb. Writers like that lie in wait licking their chops to step on someone who starts showing cracks in popularity.

Honestly, I don't think this is as much about the set lists as it is about Billy Corgan being an asshole to the people who've supported him and paid to see the shows. What kind of jerk brings a fan up on stage to complain about the show only to debase him in front of hundreds of people?

I wasn't at the Columbus show. I've never met any of the Smashing Pumpkins. I don't have any grudge against them, but I guess I don't understand what it is you're defending or what Pumpkins backlash you're speaking of. It sound like dude is being an asshole and people are calling him on it.

Well for starters: this thread. 3/4 of it is an attack on the Pumpkins material and setlist. Corgan's character didn't come into play until later on.

And besides Corgan and the Pumpkins being a running joke of alot of indie bloggers and magazines, there is a general auidence hostility towards them. The fact that Billy even let a fan up on stage to shout "your last album sucked" into the microphone" is more than most frontmen would have even considered. In fact, I bet alot of your heroes would have done alot worse to that dude than just make a snotty joke.

So no, I'm not defending Billy being a dick, because I don't really think he's being one in comparison to the media and alot of his ex-fans.

I don't disagree. I guess I just feel that while an artist should be free to do whatever he/she/it wants, I also feel that the fans of said artist have every right to call him out if he's blowing it. I would expect that Billy could be a little more cordial to the people who are feeding him. Also, I believe that he kid said that the show the night before sucked. Why even invite that kid on stage? What is the point aside from humiliating him?

You are right that a lot of people have been bitching about the set list and that could be one of the reasons Billy is losing his mind. It just seems like city after city, review after review, has something about Billy Corgan berating the audience. I don't know. It's bugging me.

Yeah, sorry, that kid did say "last night's show sucked." But it doesn't change anything. How did Billy know what the kid was going to say before he invited him on stage? He didn't know the dude was going to yell that in the mic with all the aplomb of a drunk frat boy. At least he extended the courtesy of giving the kid a stage.

The fact that the kid declined Billy's offer to refund his tickets just means the kid had a little bit of class rather than none. Smashing Pumpkins shows have rarely, if ever, been sweaty, ballstothewall, beerslinging affairs. It's art-rock, and it always has been, as much as alot of people here might despise that term. Corgan has always taken himself way too seriously, and that used to be why alot of people loved him and his music...and it's a big reason why I still love the Pumpkins.

Times have changed, the evolution of hipsters has happened, and the iconic, larger-than-life artrockers like Corgan are running into a completely different attitude from their fans than they were used to nine years ago. It seems that Billy is just now figuring out he's not performing at the Metro in 1996 anymore, and the name Smashing Pumpkins just doesn't carry the weight it once did.

I still will always admire bands like the Pumpkins, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus MC, Pixies, Interpol etc. who still present a largerthanlife image more than I will this generation of Hold Steady's, Wolf Parade and your random garage act.

That's why I wish Billy would just shut up and play...because I really don't give a shit if he's a nice guy or not. His music spoke and still speaks to me, and I want to be filled with the same sense of wonderment and detachment I used to get listening and watching his band.

I have paid many times to see SP live. I have enjoyed every single show very much except the last time they played Promowest. I think the new album blows and they played too many songs from it.

I wasn't at the Halloween show, but when you go and specifically say that certain shows are about the old songs, or acoustic, then trick the audience, it's weak as hell.

I've never minded the fact that Corgan is a dick... heck, I SAW ZWAN LIVE TWICE AND LIKED IT. But ever since his solo album tanked (so bad PS) he has been a dick x 4 and it's really lame... and sad because I've been supporting him and the Pumpkins for a long time, even when many people abandoned him.

Smashing Pumpkins postpone final Auditorium Theatre show
By Jim DeRogatis
on November 22, 2008 7:31 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Ending their controversial four-night Chicago homecoming with neither a whimper nor a bang, the Smashing Pumpkins have canceled tonight's show at the Auditorium Theatre "due to illness," according to promoters Jam Productions.

The show has been rescheduled to Dec. 8 at the Auditorium, when the band will play the same "White Crosses" set that had been planned for this evening, and fans will be able to use the same tickets they held for tonight. No word yet on a plan for refunds.

The bestselling alternative era band's much-anticipated and long-awaited return has generated more controversy than any concert here in years, rivaling Creed's infamous self-destruction at the Allstate Arena.

Advertised as a "20th Anniversary Tour," many fans expected a career overview from the reunited group. Instead, bandleader Billy Corgan gave them a conceptual performance that few seemed to understand, featuring some old hits, a lot of new material, an odd collection of rarities and monologues that apparently were part of the show but which many concertgoers heard as bitter eruptions of anger at the fans and/or onstage melt-downs.

The band's boosters said the first and second nights, "Black Sunshine" and "White Crosses," both had to be seen to understand what Corgan was attempting to do. Now fans who caught only the "Black Sunshine" night will have to wait two weeks to figure it out--if they still care at all.
