Johnny Go was blasting this record today through his outdoor speaker. High St. never sounded better. ------------------------ “Neko Case’s songs are full of claws, wolves, tornadoes, birds of prey and the occasional gust of wind. But her voice is the real force of nature.” - NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE “America may need Neko Case’s back-to-nature fantasias more than ever, 9/10” - SPIN “One of the most memorable and seductive voices in music” - NPR “She has a voice bigger and stronger than Celine Dion’s – seeing her live is a little like being flattened by the sound of a jet as it passes overhead.” - ELLE “Soaring voice and soul-searching lyrics” - DETAILS “Twanging guitars and distorted pianos echo in the distance as she tames her flamethrower voice into a soft sparkle” - MARIE CLAIRE “Case is a force of nature, 4 stars” - CHICAGO SUN-TIMES |

I'm a big fan. Lots of good releases with a similar vibe so far this year--M. Ward, Elvis Perkins... Guess Johnny Go didn't like Neko after all: http://theotherpaper.com/articles/2009/ ... 116911.txt |

Neko has a beautiful voice, but, so does Whitney Houston and she doesn't write very good love songs, either. I've enjoyed a couple of her live shows in spite of that, though. |

I think I would rather see Whitney Houston in her prime. |

So I finally gave this one a fair listen--and I like it. I actually like it better than her last album (though I love Hold On, Hold On). I'm sure it won't get the critical acclaim her last one did, as it's less challenging, but this one's more obvious country roots are more pleasing to my ear. I like the old school chugga chugga steam engine rhythm that is used on several of these songs. |
