The night they played Staches' was one of the best nights ever in that place. Gary was hanging outside the front door doing somersaults on the sidewalk, and introducing himself to hipsters who did NOT believe he was the drummer in the band they came to see. It was hilarious, the looks he got. They thought he was some wino or something.
The show at the Alrosa was kinda flat.

After years of speculation, the most important American band of the Nineties is returning to the stage with the lineup of Mark Ibold, Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West reuniting for dates around the world in 2010. Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.

Described in their own Wikipedia entry as having experienced "moderate commercial success," Pavement's catalog for the Matador, Domino, Drag City and Treble Kicker imprints has come to define in the eyes of many the blueprint for independent rock over the past generation. An evidentiary compilation release is planned to coincide with the touring sometime in 2010.

The first show announced is a New York performance on September 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. A pre-sale begins at 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 18, 2009 (tomorrow). The password for the pre-sale is ZOWEE and the ticketing link is http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004330A3C355DD. The general on-sale is slated for 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2009. Please note that tickets will be available without surcharges from the Nokia Theatre box office in Times Square and from Earwax at 218 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.

Please visit http://www.crookedrain.com for details on this on-sale as well as all Pavement news as it develops.

I enjoyed both Staches and Alrosa PAVEMENT shows. I still have the ticket.

Saw them at the first Coachella in 99 and it was one of the worst gigs I've ever been to, so... they didn't leave on a good note. I doubt that it will be the same story with these new gigs.

Pavement is the most important band of the 90s? I doubt that.

I saw them at Lollapalooza in 1995. They were ok. That particular Lollapalooza was my favorite. Sonic Youth, Jesus Lizard, Pavement, Dambuilders, I'm sure there were more...

Didn't he hand out produce too? I remember that the band boxed him in with all their amps to try keep him from tumbling across the stage, and it didn't really work.

I agree that the Stache's show was better.

I'm just saying there were tons of bands I liked better than Pavement in the 90s. Gin Blossoms werent one of them.

Yeah, the atmosphere of Stache's was drastically different than the Al Rosa, but that Stache's show was for Slanted and Enchanted, and everyone was just giddy, the band included. I seem to remember the Al Rosa show being not long after they had played "Cut Your Hair" on The Tonight Show, with Malkmus rolling his eyes to heavens throughout the entire song. His attitude just sucked all the fun out of Pavement for me after that.

I dug out the calenders. Staches' show was 6/14/92. Alrosa gig was 5/11/94. Two months before I left town.

Then there was the Newport show a couple years after the Al Rosa show. That's the one where the drummer broke his snare head and the percussionist got all whiny when they asked him to give the drummer his snare. Long delay, much bickering, so-so show.

As much as I like the idea of a Pavement reunion on paper -- and I'm sure I'll go out of my way to see it if it happens -- I'm pretty happy with the Malkmus/Jicks experience these days. Their last album was great and they put on a terrific show when I saw them several weeks ago. They were much more relaxed and seemed to really be enjoying themselves. Plus they played a handful of new songs that sounded very nice on first listen.

i was working that night, but i got off in what i thought was enough time to go see them. the security idiot at the door said.."oh this is probably their last song.." it was bit much for me to pay to go see one song so i went out back and listened through the open door. they kept going and going.. it was pissing me off cause they kept opening and closing the doors so i just walked down to skully's and drank. if i'd known they were gonna keep going on like that i probably would've dropped the $20 or whatever it was to get in.
the only show i DID see them play was lollapalooza and god knows you can't see shit from the lawn, but it sounded great. or maybe i was just happy as hell to hear the songs i loved so much. whichever, it was great.

Pavement unispiring??!?!?!??!?!?!?? The stock market is unispiring. I can't even believe I saw these words in the same sentence.

I've already made arrangements to see them on each coast. Sleep through it if you want. More room in the front row for me.
