It was cool, but I think i'd rather listen to him talk for a while (cuz his in-between banter was fascinating) and then listen to someone else play his songs. Musicianship was remarkable all around, cabaret-style setup was cool. Just thought the songs themselves would blow me away more than they did. Clare and the Reasons were great. They were his backing band. |

I should clarify, too, that VDP's songs were immensely dense and full of decades of musical history, and that did blow me away. But it also made it hard to grasp if I was hearing a song for the first time (which, for the most part, I was). 'Song Cycles' & Smile were pretty much my only reference points. |

A german taper uploded a Van Dyke Parks show he recorded in 2009 so I grabbed a copy. Happy to burn a couple CDs if you guys want a copy. |
