Boy, did you all miss a humdinger of a show last Friday (or did you? It was pretty packed). The Black Keys and All Golden piked it down I-71 to Little Brothers and put on a terrific show. The All Golden warmed it up with their usual great set, and seemed thrilled to be taking advantage of a bigger stage and a bigger audience. It seems their crowd doubles every time they play down here. They saved their big bombs for the end, wowing us with "Smoking is the Last Sin" and "Velikovsky." If you missed it, they'll be back, so make plans now! After the four-piece bombast of the All Golden, it took a tune or two to adapt to the Black Keys two-man set. But once I got used to the fact there was no bassist, man, did they smoke! Dan Auerbach can play the hell out of the guitar. And don't let the beard fool you...the kid's 23! Saying they're "bluesy" is really a bit of an understatement. The tunes are bound by a kind of bluesy shuffle, but there was some genuine rock muscle being displayed. Kind of like if Jeff Healy updated his image, stripped down his band, and played as if he was just given the gift of sight. Make sure you come early to the Sleater-Kinney show to see the Black Keys make an encore performance.
