Lucinda Offers New "World"
"Essence" follow-up due in April

Lucinda Williams, once notorious for huge lag times between records, is well on her way to being recast as positively prolific. Lost Highway will release the Louisiana-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter's seventh album, World Without Tears, on April 8th -- less than two years since her last album, Essence. By stark contrast, Williams' gold-certified 1998 release, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road -- which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and cemented her standing as one of America's leading contemporary songwriters -- came a full six years after its predecessor, Sweet Old World.

Williams co-produced World Without Tears with Mark Howard, who has engineered several high-profile Daniel Lanois productions, including U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind, Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind and Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball. The new songs strike an even balance between the bittersweet Americana crunch and sigh of Car Wheels ("Bleeding Fingers," "Righteously" and standout track "Those Three Days") and the languid, indigo-hued balladry of Essence (the opening "Fruits of My Labor" and closing "Words Fell"). Williams also revisits the delta blues that characterized her 1979 debut, Ramblin', on the muddy, lurching "Atonement," and flirts confidently with what might loosely be described as rap on "Sweet Side" and "American Dream" -- albeit "rap" with roots closer to slow-burning soul than hip-hop.

All fourteen tracks were penned by Williams and recorded live in the studio with musicians Doug Pettibone (guitar), Jim Christie (drums, percussion and keyboards) and Taras Prodaniuk (bass).

Although a tour has yet to be lined up, Williams is already scheduled to perform at the South by Southwest music festival and conference in Austin, Texas, the week of March 12th.
