This band is getting an insane amount of radioplay on cd101, much more than anybody else i can remember in the past couple years...so i'm wondering how that translates into local sales and draw. i've never seen them play before...are their shows pretty big? do they even have an album out?

well, they've been around here foreeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvveeeeeerrrrrrrrr.

the song on cd101, if it's the same one that's been playing, is sort of about used kids and Ron House.

I've been to a few of their shows, and played with them once, it was fun, and there were a pretty good amount of people there.

they're fun.

the last few earwig shows i've been too have been packed (granted the last one was at andyman's which isn't that hard to pack.)

i heart earwig. that show on friday with chris mccoy and beat the devil is going to be killer.

Earwig has definitely earned a little airplay.

I could conjecture about how close they were to really hitting it bigtime, like how they were supposed to be the next Nirvana, but I think that would be less valuble than maybe someone who actually knows some facts speaking up instead.

Here's what i do know though, their album Perfect Past Tense (2000) is an absolutly great rock record, definitely in my top 5 favorites to come out of Columbus, ever. In the last year, they've put out a new record (which contains the radio song you mention) and it is also quite good.

Earwig is so big that smaller bands orbit around them.

i really, really, really am not trying to take anything way from earwig, and lizard specifically. i have more respect for him than most folks i've ever met, much less had the ease and pleasure of working with. the airplay and attention couldn't be going to a more deserving cat in this town. becasue there aren't any. not MORE deserving. a couple of folks tie, but i digress.

the view from my side of the bar is that cd101 found a local track that was (in their eyes) just "kitchy" enough to justify it getting a little more airplay than most locals, and it was a damn-fine enough song that the audience responded to it. and the fact that it is about ron and called "used kids" gave the audience an easy way to respond. "hey, that song's cool becasue its a good song about a place i've shopped!" this was a no-brainer for the folks at 101. "we support the local bands" is what they can now tout, when the reality is, if there hadn't been a song called "used kids" on the disc, they wouldn't have given it as many prime-time spins. it's a novelty to them.

if you honestly think the cd101 crowd doesn't/hasn't shopped at used kids either presently or in their "college days" then you really don't get out of the center of town enough.


but then again, what do i know . . . i'd a cranky old man who doesn't like 85% of the music discussed here or played on cd101, yet i spend most of my messageboard time here, and most of my radio time listening to 101
