Any guesses as to who the next Yankees coach is going to be, assuming Steinbrenner isn't full of shit? I'm thinking Jim Leyland's head grafted onto Dusty Baker's body, a la the Rosie Grier movie The Thing With Two Heads.

Don Mattingly?

Given the Yankees' NASA-like budget, I would say that either choice is just as likely.

Although I like my idea, you're probably right, Chip. I like the implication that Joe Torre has no idea what it means to be a Yankee.


It is rumored that Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has already picked Mattingly as his choice to replace current manager Joe Torre, whose contract expires after the 2007 season. In fact, Michael Kay, the lead play-by-play man for the YES Network says:

"From everything that I have heard the Yankees are absolutely blown away by how great Don Mattingly has been as the hitting coach, his work ethic and his level of preparedness. I think when Joe Torre leaves, the next manager will be Don Mattingly."

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has praised Mattingly as someone who "understands what it is to be a Yankee" and said he "could possibly" become the Yankees' manager.

I think Chip Caray made mention of it during the game. "Could we be looking at the next Yankees manager?" Not really that original of an idea on my part.

I love how when Posada knocked that one down the right field line Caray (or Benley) said "That might rattle a rookie pitcher. For Borowski, it's just strike two."

The best part of tonight's win ... no game in Cleveland on Wednesday night, the same night as the Van Halen show. I was worried not only about parking but trying to keep up on the game while watching DLR and EVH.

You're right. I remember that line, but only barely. After Carmona was snubbed on Friday, I tried to zone the commentary out as much as possible. The TBS crew was like listening to 1010 WINS, for Christ's sake. I know Cleveland is a smaller market, but you would think some degree of objectivity would be considered professional, let alone fair.

If they want to beat the Sox, they're going to have to get their "Fist Bump vs. High Five" celebratory gestures in order. It makes it look like you've never had anything to celebrate before.
