So I just took on a second cat, which brings our small zoo up to two cats and a small dog. I called my rental office posing as a prospective tenant and they said that there is a limit of 2 animals per apartment. I know that tons of people keep pets when they're not supposed to and what not, but I've never done that. I know what I'm doing isn't right or whatever, but does anyone have any tips for "getting away with it"? I don't want to get evicted because I couldn't let a declawed stray cat stay out in this cold weather.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would paint both cats to look exactly the same. makes it tough to tell there's two.

I wouldn't risk an eviction for a cat. If I were you I would start calling friends and no-kill shelters to find a home for the poor thing.

If there is a two pet limit, then they can either evict you or start charging you for being over the limit.

1. Chances are your lease has an entry by owner policy. This makes it a little safer to risk it with inside animals like cats (but they can't sit in the window side by side).
2. Even if they somehow found out you still had both, they are required to give you a 3 day notice to either leave the premises or rectify the situation...this is before any kind of court (or credit affecting) filing would take place.

My guess is that you're fine. I mean it's a cat and an indoor cat at that, no? How often is your landlord / maintenance folk in your apartment? Just make sure the cat is at a friends or whatever whenever you need work done.

Yeah, plus I imagine the first few times we could claim we're cat sitting :-p

i did it a couple times in college without any problem, but those were like buckeye real estate i-could-give-a-crap places, ya know.

it really just depends. what is your risk...eviction or just getting rid of the pet? how long will you be there? if you have an agency and/or maintenance person or company as opposed to one dude who does it all, they probably won't even notice. we lived in a place that was supposed to have ONE and we had FOUR and we just shut them in an upstairs room if someone was coming to work on the house.

and cats, like the good little beings they are, generally hide anyways when strange folk are about.

That's sort of what I figured Rosehip. I live in Governours Square, which is a HUGE community. It took them 4 months to figure out we had a dog that I though we had told them about, so I think we'll be okay.
