I think you can get stuff at the hardware that'll dissolve the Loc-tite. I'd recommend going into Schreiner's and asking.

i don't think a fixed gear is the right choice for your first/only/commuter bike, but that's just me. The adherents to the fixie cause are rather fervent, and would tell you differently. And, you'd have to start riding around with one pant leg rolled up and a bandana over your face.

I'd argue that the energy efficiency reason for owning a fixie is pretty much a non-starter in this case. In terms of stopping and starting, there's just no way you can argue a fixie takes less energy. In terms of simplicity of maintenance, or style, or less initial cost, yeah, a single speed might win out.

if you're doing a Triathalon, you don't want to do it on a fixed gear. as far as a first commuter, i wouldn't start with a fixed gear if i were you, but i did since i'm me. also, buy and helmut and wear the motherfucker.
