You can file them under "taking a quarter off of college metal" along with Sword, Mastodon, Early Man, 3 Inches of Blood, etc. Basically, "metal" you can listen to and your mom won't get upset aka safe metal.

Listenable metal - oh the horror. I'll take that any day over this:

College metal, College Noise Bands, Colllege Rock, College Cock ... eh...

I personally haven't heard Dead Child yet, so I can't say I like or dislike their music. I do know the dude was in Slint.

I'm interested to hear it, but it does seems like as of late, everyone is jumping on the metal / stoner rock bandwagon.

But for all intensive purposes, this should be a fun show.

I'd take cookie monster any day over the garbage ass vox in Dead Child. Dude sounds like a wizard rapper.

Couple that with the corniest bio. You're a "metal" band, do you really need a bio? About prosthetics? Wokka wokka Wokka! Members of Slint in a metal band, that's the bigger joke.

Hear that Superunison? Switching genres as a musician is a joke. I mean, going from a Fugazi-loving, post-hardcore band to an instrumental space rock band is silly. You'd never do something like that, would you?

Ned, you're the only one that takes me seriously. I could take that as a compliment but instead I'll say, stop acting so butt-hurt.

Was Michael Jordan good at baseball?
What was Master P best at; rapping or basketball? (Truly a difficult one)
All I'm saying is, stick with what you know.

This is fun.

I don't listen to the same stuff I did in '92 so why should Pajo play the same style of music he was playing in '92? I'm listening to the Dead Child CD as I type this and my only criticism is that it isn't as heavy as I'd like it to be.

sometimes slint *was* a metal band. different people can certainly like to play different things.

i happen to like to play the dulcimer too.

and ned, you know i think a lot of the things you hold near and dear are absolutely irredeemable, but i've never told you you suck for liking poison.

musically slint were very 'eavy for their time. esp. spiderland.
the guitar tones always reminded me of old metallica. still heavier than ISIS or BORIS or whtever indi rockkers think is hot shit for metal.
i am curious to hear dead child. i like louisville.
more curious to see rope ripping again w/ P.I.
that dude is underground hessian kommand.

bands should be judged on their merits, not what style of band they were in beforehand. i don't see how simply being into different styles of music makes you a poser. anyway, dave was in metal and hc bands before slint.

i think the Deadchild ep is ok, but i'm going to reserve my opinion until i see them live.

I'm going to post this interview on Donewaiting sometime soon to promote this show at Ruby's but I was really anxious to get it up so I just posted it on AtomicNed.com.

Here's an excerpt (thanks for the material Jill!).

Read the whole thing here: http://atomicned.com/?p=192

Quote:
Message boards are lame, anonymous users with the freedom to say what they want without being held accountable. That being said, you’ve been taken to task by a few posters on the Donewaiting message board essentially as being a “fake” metal musician. And Dead Child has been mentioned in the same breath as bands who supposedly previously wouldn’t claim their “metalness”, if you will, but now are perceived as jumping on the bandwagon. So I ask you, Mr. Pajo, would you care to silence your anonymous, hiding behind a name, “critics”?

This is a bummer but I anticipated this kind of backlash. It’s a risk for us to call ourselves a metal band and it would be just as easy for us to drop it. But we set out to form a metal band so why refer to it as anything else? I’m trying to get away from this elitist bullshit! Besides, aren’t there more fruitful efforts to pursue while we orbit on this tiny pebble than sorting out what’s metal and what’s not? Metal is a broad fucking term – ultimately, it’s just music and attitude.

I understand the sentiment though – poser metal (hair metal) was a real problem in the 80s and I used to hate those guys/bands. But these days it’s not so much of an issue, except for that nu metal shit. Hot Topic metal. I think you’ll see more and more people like me coming in (or back) from other genres that have finally ‘seen the light.’ I think this should be welcomed because it will help expand and fortify the genre. It’ll be interesting to see what develops from these new influences. What I’m trying to say is, I understand that metal is precious to you and you have every right to be suspicious but please judge us on our music. Not our recorded history (which only tells a fraction of the story). If it’s not your cup of tea, we are easily ignored.

I don’t know why people would think we’re jumping on some sort of bandwagon, it’s not like I’m milking the market dry. I’ve had prominent people in the indie rock world, people who I thought were friends, turn their back on me for “committing career suicide.” Quarterstick is pushing the record as hard as they can but we’re all still broke, sleeping on floors, averaging $100 a show, playing to tiny crowds. I’m 40 years old, We got $0 the last two times we played out and they were legitimate shows! I’ve been doing this shit for a long time. Yes, I gave up a successful career in the indie rock world and my old friends don’t talk to me any more. But I can’t deny where my heart is, and I can’t help that it’s 100% in metal.

To those anonymous critics that never experienced life before cell phones, internet, MTV, and compact discs:

* My front four teeth are fake because the Louisville Outlaw bikers knocked them out at the Iron Maiden concert in Louisville, KY in 1983. It was their ‘Piece of Mind’ tour and Fastway and Saxon opened. It must have been their first tour with their new drummer, Nicko McBrain. Fuck you.
* My first band was a metal/hardcore crossover band called ‘Maurice’. We did a tour opening for Samhain in 85? 86? I think ‘Unholy Passion’ had just come out. Glenn called my parents house months after the tour because he was forming a solo band called Danzig and he liked my guitar playing (I could shred way better then). I never called him back because we had just started Slint and I didn’t want to play show-off guitar anymore. FUCK you.
* I was playing Malmsteen licks when he was in Alcatraz – Rising Force hadn’t started yet. I saw Metallica with Cliff and they slayed. Fuck you and YOU.
* FUCK YALL.

The only thing worse than people jumping on bandwagons is people assuming a band is doing that without knowing shit about what they like and who they are.

So if I only got into metal yesterday, and liked it so much that I wanted to start a band in the genre, that makes me fake? Whatthefuckever.

Besides, there are some people on this board who jumped on the bandwagon fairly recently who were most likely making fun of guys like me that have been in metal bands since 1987. I don't think you are fake, I say welcome to the party.

I'll also say that if there is any wizardry in the vocals, what the fuck isn't metal about that? DIO 4EVA BITCHES!!!

I like one song by Dead Child so far, and look foward to hearing more and seeing them live sometime, regardless of when they decided to be "metal".

Glad I could help, Ned. Dude may have "cred" for miles. Doesn't mean much to me. I don't like the vibe. I may change the idea of being a 100% poser metal album to a (near) mid-life crisis metal album.
