I think this is a great idea. And it is just for one day, ride the bus, walk or ride a freakin bike.

Bo, of all those "parks" you listed downtown, can you tell me where any of them are besides Schiller Park, Goodale and the Deaf Park?
The city can call a "park" a little corner of two streets where a patch of grass is with a little fence surrounding it. Put a city sign there, it's a park!

Honestly, there is an excess of the downtown area being used for parking. Thing is, the spaces aren't utilized properly. They are single floor parking lots, not three, four, etc. tier parking garages. Makes for lots of lots with not that many spaces and a whole lot of ugly blocks downtown.

I'm all for convenience when it comes to getting to work or some of the nightlife (getting a spot around Tip Top has never been difficult, ever, try harder J-Dog) but I think the city could do a better job of using the parking spaces more efficiently and getting a decent park or two downtown. How sweet would it be to have another decent park across the street from Skylab, or in that lot across from Carabar?

I guess you're right, there are some decent parks around downtown. Couldn't hurt to have more. When confronted with the park vs. parking scenario, I'm always going to go the anti-car/practical route in favor of some trees and a bench. That's just me.

Seriously though, bike lanes really need to happen. Columbus could be one of the most bike-friendly cities of its size in the nation, but the city is too stupid worrying about a silly tourist attraction street car to actually get anything real done. Bring bike lanes in would eliminate a lot of need for parking spaces everywhere, not just downtown, at least for 9 months out of the year. I know they have a plan to bring in bike lanes and bike parking, but I want to see how long it takes. They could take parking off the right curb lanes of 4th and Summit and have bikes lanes there in a matter of weeks.

Can't they just have a silent rave or something? For real though, bike lanes are IMPERATIVE.

Isn't parking lot space typically dictated by city ordinance and firecode as well?

A business with a certain amount of square footage must adhere to city ordinance to provide a certain number of parking spaces for the service it provides. Any business in Dublin has to, so I'm only assuming downtown may have something similar.

But one of the reasons I like Columbus is actually for the parks in the area. The bike/running trail along the river is pretty friggin' great, even with the flashers and occasional stabbings.

Now, what I'd like to see is some sort of protest in the City of Chicago to build public restrooms in their downtown area. I've never had to pee harder in my life than everytime I visit Chicago.
