I wasn't very discriminating. I went to all of the bars, but, Crazy Mama's was a favorite.
They had Dragon Stout, which I'm pretty sure has THC or some hallucinogenic in it. I remember having a few and picking up Jenny Mae in one arm and my roommate in the other and dancing that way for awhile and the DJ saying over the p.a., "drrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagon!"

I wondered what happened to Rick, too- and what the special ingredient was in the sauce. My roommates had to go to court with him, once, for a flyer they did. Riding downtown with their lawyer, the lawyer pulls down the sun visor and a big bag of weed falls in his lap.

Oh, and Larry's is still a gay bar!

way more then mustards, or travel agency, or purity, or larry's or honestly even staches, mama's was my home. from the 1st time i snuck in there as a teen in in '84 to the last night it was open as the kool kat club, that place did more to shape the tj we all know and "love" than anywhere/anyone/anything on this planet.

I bartended in the back room at Crazy Mama's for about three months. Every time I showed up for work, the cash registers were empty. I could only sell drinks to people who had exact change. And that was if I was lucky enough to have anything to sell. There never was much behind the bar until we made enough money to send one of the bouncers down to the carryout downstairs to buy beer, or to the Kroger down the street to buy diluted liquor. And then the Nutt brother with the cheesy moustache (Charlie?) watched me like a hawk to make sure I always underpoured the drinks. Don't even get me started on the times I was trapped for two identical sets a night of Mark Gunderson. Then the Nutts accused all their employees of stealing and fired everyone.

i saw the talking heads "stop making sense" film at the midnight movies at the old roxy/world theater. two rows in front of me were some drunk frat guys. one of them had the hiccups for the first couple of songs, then seemed to fall asleep/pass out for a bit. during "swamp" the guy woke up leaned forward and puked all over the seat in front of him. i don't hear "swamp" often, but when i do, i always think of that.

another time a group of us went to see an iron maiden concert movie at midnight there. in front of us was some older guy (though probably younger than i am today) reading a sci-fi book before the movie started. about five minutes into the movie, he got up and left. we couldn't help but think he was expecting a different kind of iron maiden.

How bout the South Heidelberg? What kind of place was that in the late 80's? I was 15 when I drank my first beer (at a bar) there, and hardly being able to reach the bar. I think Rustic Bucket was playing? They did a cover of In-a-gadda-da-vida with a drum solo. This was in 94 I think.

in all the years of mama's for me, i was only ever in the south berg once, to meet up with a booty call, in the days before they were called booty calls.

Yea Crazy Mama's kicked us out more so we were at the south berg by default.

I loved Crazy Mama's. I wish I had discovered it earlier than I had. I still love that fact that "Mirror People" by Love and Rockets is written about that bar.

Crazy Mama's. I hated moving band equipment in that place! But still, I played there a few times. Who was the bar tender with the big spiked hair? He was always pretty cool to us.

South berg. The worst bathrooms I've EVER been in. The urine on the floor was almost higher than the soles of our shoes! Nasty.

Anybody remember Not Al's? I played on the back porch there a few times.
