THE LOST REVIVAL "Singer/songwriter Kevin Collins was just born to be a frontman. His throaty singing, interspersed with a strong falsetto, gives the folk-inspired, synth-laced epics a primal texture that’s missing from so many bands that use Americana as their undercarriage. And the man has charisma to spare...it’s encouraging that after the Lost Revival’s strong debut, Homemade Confetti, the new songs are more focused, with even stronger hooks (see “Cotton and Lace” and “Mayqueen”), yet still grand and gutsy. The addition of saxophone was cool, too." -Joel Oliphint, The Other Paper
THE WHILES Hailing from the heart of the Midwest, the Whiles (formerly known as Mrs. Children) eschew the punk rock and lo-fi sounds that the "Cowlumbus" sound has been more (in) famously known for a softer gentler approach that reflects perhaps more of the sound of the seasons than the brush back sounds that have emanated from Columbus over the past twenty-years or so.Taking their cues from the spiritual side of their collective hearts (principal songwriter Joe Peppercorn is a professional organ play and Latin teacher) "Colors of the Year" touches on the gentler side of love and longing, with wonderful three-part harmonies and distant echoes of Nick Drake, The Zombies and Eric Anderson to new/old fangled sounds such as Belle and Sebastian, Ron Sexmith and The Smiths. But as all talented bands they don't wear their influences on their sleeve - they mesh them into their own wonderful noise. Self produced with some engineering duties by Jon Chinn (New Bomb Turks), "Colors of the Year" is a great leap forward from their self-released EP "Break My Back," which garnered the band mention on Rolling Stone magazine's issue on "Ten Most Rocking College Towns." Their demo at the time landed them on the cover of the Columbus Alive weekly and they have managed to make a fairly rabid following in the Midwest. Formed years ago by high school classmates (yes, they are that young) the band (as Mrs. Children) played in clubs during that time. It wasn't until they shed their former guitarist and replaced him with brother Matt Peppercorn that Joe felt the music strings loosen and made the epic leap into the breathtaking songwriter he is. Sit back and listen to another voice of the Y generation. No props, no gimmicks, and no screams - just the simple ache of longing.
BOOKMOBILE So, Dan says to Sean, while they are playing a NYC show with the Sowashes, "Dude...I've wanted to start a band called Bookmobile since high school. (Dan and Sean went to the same high school, but didn't hang back in the day.) and I think you'd be perfect for it." Sean said he is too busy already fronting Melty Melty, and Winter Makes Sailors, but he'd give it a shot. So, Dan played Sean riffs over which Sean was able to sing sweet catchy, pop melodies. It was a hit. Sean was in. They auditioned some drummers and Antonio Garza was the perfect fit. He was busy with Paper Airplane, but he was into the awesome 2 minute jams that Dan and Sean were writing. Dan said he loved playing with John Fitzgerald from his Handshake days, and Antonio and Sean loved John from Pretty Mighty Mighty. So, they wrote some songs. Then they wrote some more songs. They started recording. They started over recording. Now they are almost done recording. Maybe. Either way. Columbus, Ohio loves Bookmobile. If you catch them when they are on, they are on fire. If you catch them when they are off, it's unforgettable...
