The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) offers a stellar line-up of music making opportunities to engage all ages and interests with summer camps and clinics at the Jazz Academy community instructional space in the Lincoln Theatre complex. With nearly 5,000 square feet, the Jazz Academy is a premier facility for multi-generational and recreational music making, ensemble playing, after-school programs, technology instruction and lectures with world-class musicians.
Join Sean Carney and the Sean Carney Band for CAMP Blues (June 13-17, June 20-24), a week-long ensemble experience focusing on learning about and playing the blues both beginning and advanced camps are now available. Or if rock is more your style, sign up for CAMP Rock (June 20-24) where you will listen to great rock recordings, jam with your ensemble and rehearse with camp participants and great professional musicians.
Learn the art and science of music production and recording with Andy Dodson of Central City Recording/Wonderland in Live Recording CAMP (July 11-15). COSI will also host Electronic Music Making (July 11-15) where you can discover the science of sound, compose your own songs and learn basic recording with GarageBand.
Learn to play piano by ear using lead sheets with nationally-acclaimed music educator Bradley Sowash in Play Piano Today CAMP Faking it with Lead Sheets (July 19-28). And Jay Miglia will introduce you to playing by ear on "big band" instruments with No Charts! Ensemble (June 27-July 1), help you develop your jazz improvisational skills in IMPROVisation (June 27-July 1), and help beginning and intermediate musicians shake off the rust in Big Band for Grown-Ups (July 17-21).
The Jazz Academy will also host a Jazz Duo Clinic & Coaching Session (May 7, 2:00 PM) where flutist Ali Ryerson and pianist Steve Rudolph will explore, discuss and demonstrate both the advantages and the challenges of performing in a jazz duo. The Columbus Music Co-op will also present their next free workshop about health care and insurance for musicians (May 8, 2:00 PM).
