Wellllllll... I'd certainly like to have you at our show. Perhaps the free Dan Melchior in-store at Used Kids on Nov. 5th will suffice??

Shit, for real? That might just do the trick, though I do need to see Mr. Williams someday and my time to do so is probably running out.

TREE OF SNAKES ...
[ Columbus, OH ]

Columbus, Ohio's Tree of Snakes reminds me of my high school band, Facetown Girls. Both had pretty fucked-up senses of humor, questionable musical talent and little regard for recording fidelity. Tree of Snakes, however, actually writes good songs, whereas Facetown Girls tried only to offend and annoy.

Led by Jeff "Fern" Fernengel, Tree of Snakes has made the unusual choice of releasing an acoustic album before its rock debut. Having heard (and liked) TOS's electric versions, I'm inclined to think of Unplugged as something Ron House or Daniel Johnston would put out if they had a couple hours and a fifth of whiskey to kill.

Gruff opener "Like a Toad" mutates from an upbeat, slightly repetitive guitar line to an homage to Boston's greatest hit ("more than a feeling / when I lick a toad"). "Serious Knife Fight" employs shouted backing vocals and stream-of-conscious lyrics ("I'm here tonight / to be with you last night") before mutating into the incredibly short "Miami Virus." "Fast Food, Fast Women" and "Good Looking" take shots at ex's and unattainable women, the latter employing the only whistle solo I've ever heard in an acoustic punk song.

"Trusty Swordfish" and "Earl" turn up the sneer and sarcasm, while "Beerless in Seattle" tales a vaguely narrative turn - at least for Tree of Snakes ("I was not drunk/ I got no drugs/ but I got soul"). Overall it's a short, sharp debut from a band to watch. -

RUBY VILEOS ...
[ Cincinnati, OH ]

Ruby Vileos formed in 1998 when singer/songwriter Ali Edwards joined forces with Bill Alletzhauser and Dave Morrison (Ass Ponys). Morrison departed in 2001 at which time Victor Strunk and Todd Drake came on board to complete the lineup.

The band spent the past few years honing their unique sound and live show, while supporting their debut release, The King Is Dead, which received copious amounts of airplay around the US and Canada. The song "Big Gun" landed on WOXY’s “97 Best of 2001” and the band won “Best New Artist” at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards that same year. Their songbook having multiplied four times over, they continue to play extensively, opening for bands such as Calexico, Elf Power, Promise Ring and on occasion, and headlining with regularity at venues such as The Southgate House, The Comet, The Northside Tavern, and York Street Café.

In 2003, Ruby Vileos entered Ultrasuede Studios with engineer/producer John Curley (Afghan Whigs) to begin work on a new full-length cd. Recording sessions at Ultrasuede, combined with recording at the band’s home studio, resulted in the sophomore effort, This is the Day, released May 1, 2004.

EARWIG ...
[ Lizard Family Music -- Columbus, OH ]

Earwig plays cerebral, melancholy pop. Since it’s inception in the 90‘s, the band has won over it’s share of fans, critics and industry insiders with their intense live performances. They have a loyal, established nationwide fan base and have successfully toured the U.S. Their albums have sold over seven thousand copies. For “Perfect Past Tense”, Earwig accepted the offer to work with multi-platinum selling producer Jared Kotler. Now Earwig continues to recieve worldwide exposure. They have taken their melodic guitars and big hooks from their micro-indie record label (LFM records) to fanzines, underground clubs, online publications and mainstream radio nationwide. Now with two successful indie albums under their belts and a new record climbing the charts, Earwig continues to move on to new heights. Recently the band has had their music featured in major network television shows, a BBC documentary and has a new CD E.P. being released in England by a respected indie label. They have also been featured in several national music magazines. Riding a wave of ever increasing hits and song downloads on their own and other sites, growing album sales online and with national retail distributors, Earwig has undertaken an intense commercial/college radio, music press and internet promotional effort in cooperation with a respected national PR firm. The band is currently on tour and in talks with possible producers for their upcoming record.

84 NASH ...
[ Columbus, OH ]

They are 84 Nash, from Columbus, Ohio. Kevin Elliott, Andy Hampel, and J.P. Herrmann have been together since high school in various small towns around Southwest Miami County. Unknowingly their homemade four-track cassettes developed a following in nearby Dayton, winning the ear of other Dayton bands, such as Swearing at Motorists, Brainiac, and Guided By Voices - whose leader, Robert Pollard, made 84 Nash's first proper LP; The Kings of Yeah (1998). It was the first non-GBV release on Rockathon Records. These static-rock soundings were a snapshot of things to come, full of agitated, youthful energy jumping head-first out of the gates. They were let loose upon the world of pop music.

Shortly thereafter 84 Nash moved east towards university and the fertile rock landscape of Columbus. Rockathon then released the stellar second record, Band for Hire (2000), to wild acclaim - among the core fanbase of maybe 50 kids in town. However a few things were different this time out. The bursts of frenetic noise became more fully realized songs. Anthems were soon crafted by our action pop superheroes, colored in all shades of melody and sharp hooks. The rock simply rocked more, while the pop became the signature that separated 84 Nash from the rest. This was obvious to the growing legion that had begun witnessing the band evolve at any one of their frantic, sweat and dance soaked live shows. Attendance became mandatory, obsessive almost, to the throng who came to sing-along, jump-along with the best band in town.

Around this time, current drummer James Brent joined the group, solidifying the already potent lineup into the "something more" that they've always hoped to become. Mini-tours, a couple singles, some compilation appearances and a mass of songwriting ensued as the band honed their excitement into their finest material to date, A Secret Reward (2003). Full of lush, sonic splendors captured in the band's hideout and studio, The Center of Japanese Helium, the new record has the over-the-top intensity of arena rock with the integrity and authenticity of being played in a basement - producing hit after unheard hit. Later in 2003, the band will finally unveil their 40 song opus, Hard Songs, and re-release a pair of 28 song cassettes made by the band during their high school years.

THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY ...
[ -- Cleveland, OH ]

Bim was living in Cleveland, working at a club and commuting to play gigs and rehearse in Columbus with his other band, the Bassholes. Christopher's main band, the Chargers Street Gang, was winding down as their singer moved away. Buddy and Mike were heading back home from Hollywood following a stint in the short-lived Neon King Kong (fronted by Le Shok's Hot Rod Todd) and were looking to start a band that might last longer than a year. They all got together one day in Chris's basement and had written three songs in one afternoon. This Moment In Black History was born.

This Moment bring the chaos of basement hardcore shows to a new level of musicianship and stature. You get thirty full minutes of freakout every time they perform, no questions asked. They view playing live to the P-Funk Challenge -- "can you top us?" They pride themselves on being the heaviest, loudest, catchiest, most memorable band on any bill they play, and can back it up on record too.

DON CABALLERO ...
[ Pittsburgh, PA ]

Pittsburgh math rockers Don Caballero were one of the first bands to expand on the work of genre innovators like Bastro, Bitch Magnet, and (especially) Slint. Their music is entirely instrumental, and while their guitar interplay is as complex and dissonant as any of their peers, the real driving force behind their precisely calibrated attack is virtuosic drummer Damon Che. In essence, it is Che's manic explosions and stop-on-a-dime shifts in time signature that map out the trail his bandmates follow. His whirlwind of percussion help pace the crashing din of the rest of the quartet, yet they also have a firm grasp of dynamics and often slow things down into a heavy dirge. And despite the influence of jazz, there is no improvisation -- all the group's compositions are carefully structured, no matter how chaotic they seem. Don Caballero recorded several albums for Touch & Go Records over the '90s to positive critical and fan response. Their live show is loud and sweaty and involved and everything that is great about rock & roll.
