Ohio Film + Music Fest Begins Tonight!

Donewaiting had some early coverage of this locally born, Ohio-centric festival a few months back, but as details have emerged and the hour drawn near it’s time for an excited reminder. The festival kicks off tonight (8PM) at Bourbon St Cafe with a series of short documentaries and live footage from several historical Columbus and Dayton bands. Following the screenings, the first of three nights of live music shows begins next door at The Summit. The bills for all three nights of music are excellent, showcasing some of Ohio’s premier homegrown talent. Of note is the live debut of RJD2′s Icebird project, a resurgent Kelley Deal in R Ring, and a return to the motherland by Heartless Bastards. I doubt any folks around here need to be introduced to New Bomb Turks, Nick Tolford, Blueprint, EYE, or Envelope, but yeah, they are all (along with others) performing as part of this over the next three nights.

While the collection of musical performances is going to be great, the film offerings are proving to be the real rare treat. There is more happening than I have time to highlight, so I really encourage a review of the festival website for a thorough rundown of what’s showing. Highlights for me will definitely begin on Friday with The Garage Tapes, three never-before-screened short films featuring a musing and performing Tom Waits, as shot by Jim Jarmusch. In the vein of music-related films, the documentary Outside In delves into the often difficult life of Akron artist Alfred McMoore, who was befriended by Dan Auerbach and was the source for Auerbach’s band name- The Black Keys. 45365, a winner of the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW, is a portrait of Sidney, Ohio and describes both the simplicity and depth of life and relationships small-town America. Columbus ex-pat and festival co-founder Eric Mahoney is screening is own contribution- North Dixie Drive, about the eccentricities of one particular Dayton neighborhood and the characters found within it. Also on my must-see list is Oscar-nominated The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant and 4192: The Crowning of the Hit King about the career of Pete Rose. Tickets are still available for all these events, check the festival website or Facebook page for showtimes. Movies will be screened at the Arena Grand Theater (they have beer) downtown. Get on it!

Classic Guided by Voices lineup records new album

According to Mojo, it’ll be out on New Year’s Day:

Guided By Voices classic ’90s line-up will release an album of new material in January 2012.

The cult, low-fi heroes – Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos, Mitch Mitchell and Kevin Fennell – have returned to the studio to record Let’s Go Eat The Factory. It will be this line-up’s first new LP since 1996′s fan favourite Under The Bushes, Under The Stars. The band have just completed a year-long reunion tour.

Let’s Go Eat The Factory will be released on January 1, 2012.

All three locals on this bill would be worth venturing out to see separately, so seeing the Kyle Sowashes, Ghost Shirt and Bicentennial Bear play a free show together at Carabar is a no-brainer (esp. if part 1 of Lost Weekend’s two-night anniversary extravaganza isn’t your thing).

Icing on the cake is Dayton’s Smug Brothers, fronted by Kyle Melton and featuring Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists) on drums. GBV fans will find plenty to like on the band’s new EP, Stock Romeo — 7 songs/15 minutes chock full of home-fi hooks. Sample for yourself above.

Kari Rosenberg Scholarship Fund Benefit in Dayton

Tim Anderl asked if I could pass this information along. Sounds like a good cause.

There is a concert on Saturday at the Nite Owl in Dayton, Ohio and it starts around 9:30. It is a benefit for the Kari Rosenberg Scholarship Fund. Kari received her BFA in Graphic Arts from Ohio University in 2003. She was killed in August 2005 while driving in her hometown of Cincinnati during a particularly bad storm that came as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The scholarship is awarded through Ohio University’s art school. .

Anyway, the concert features performances by Dayton-native Nathan Peters (of popular Dayton indie rock act Captain of Industry), Western Sieve, Brainbow, Beast, and local folk rock songwriter Joe Anderl (and the Miami Valley Sound Machine).

“Kari Rosenberg was always an ambitious woman. She was ambitious when it came to everything in her life: family, friends, love of art and music, everything.

Her family was never at a distance that her cell phone would not take her. I remember particularly those conversations with her mom, how they would just drop in with one another like two old souls comparing the weather. Kari seemed as much in love with her family as she was fascinated by them. I never spent time with the Rosenbergs, but they were always painted with respect, and love, and a connectedness to her. She tapped into a primal sense of unity, and seemed sure of the fact that when you were talking about her family, you were talking about her people.

Kari’s love for music was inspiring. Even when she was listening to something old it was as if she was listening to something new. In my mind’s eye, Kari is always dancing, shaking it, being the best dance partner you could ever ask for. She danced in that way that only true music lovers do, a touch of abandon, a touch of performance.

Perhaps Kari’s social life was her most ambitious endeavor; she managed it as skillfully as every other undertaking in her life. She was the biggest, brightest social butterfly in town, and managed to accumulate about bi-zillion friends in the process. She was unmistakably present with that husky belly laughter that will echo in the back of my mind for the rest of my life. She unleashed her laughter like a drawbridge to her heart, and proved to be, repeatedly, the most open human being I had ever met. Her laughter, never at another’s expense, always seemed like a testament to her openness.

Her art was balanced perfectly as an emerging career and a labor of love. I was proud to know her for so many reasons, and I’m not ashamed to say that her art was one of them. Kari’s art, it seemed to me, showed a side of her that wasn’t accessible in mere conversation. It was something intrinsic to her nature, but hidden as well. I think that’s the tightrope that all genius walks, and Kari in my mind, was most certainly a genius. I’m also very proud to be writing this for a group of people who love Kari and her artwork so deeply that they are working day and night to make a platform for her work. I’m warmed by the fact that her artwork is bringing those of us who love her together posthumously, in the same way that her presence brought me and so many of my friends together every time that we drifted.”

Hawthorne Heights Sues Record Label

Dayton’s screamo darlings, Hawthorne Heights is suing it’s record label. According to this Billboard article, the shit has hit the fan.

There’s so many juicy tidbits from the article I just want to cut and paste the whole thing.

Here’s a few highlights:

The band claims that Brummel’s “overly-aggressive, unethical and illegal schemes and tactics,” including physically threatening music industry figures and scheming against other artists, have severely damaged the band’s reputation and its relationship with fans.
The label signed the band’s name without their knowledge or approval to a so-called manifesto, which falsely stated that the band believed it was in some type of war with artists in the hip-hop and R&B music genres, leading many to brand the band as racist.
Despite sales of nearly 1.5 million units of the band’s recordings and videos, Victory and Brummel claim that the band owes the label in excess of $1 million, the suit says, even though Victory has received in excess of $10 million in revenues from their sale of Hawthorne Heights’ CDs, DVDs and merchandise.

The band has also posted more information (their point of view) on their official website.

At least they’ll still be making $100K at the Orange County Fair.
