Filmmaker Eileen Yaghoobian spent five years – and her own dime – putting together this documentary that is a snapshot of contemporary rock poster artists who live in rock cities other than L.A. or New York. And much like the artists she chose to feature, the film is a cut-and-paste collage of images, personal stories, theories, history lesson, and, yes, rock n’ roll.

As with any sub-culture of artist-types, there are some fucking weirdos in the movie who yammer on and on seemingly about nothing or about the crazy visions they have in their heads. And then there’s Art Chantry – a tell-it-like-it-is sort of guy – who made a name for himself with the posters, album covers, etc. that he did for Seattle punk bands in the late ’80s/early ’90s. Chantry’s the guy who’s been around the block, who’s seen just about everything there is to see, and who speaks wisely of the different styles, trends, and history within the disjointed world of rock poster artists (though that world is becoming more and more cohesive as the internet is bringing artists together with each other and with fans through sites like Gigposters.com).

Though the subject is explored a bit in Died Young, Stayed Pretty, the one thing I thought deserved more attention was the artists’ emotional bond with the bands that they create posters for. I didn’t get a real good sense if the artists were creating posters for bands they liked and/or that inspired them or if the art came first and then they had to wait to use it until the right band/show/venue came along.

Nevertheless, the story is good, the characters interesting, the interviews revealing, the art (most of it) beautiful.

Eileen Yaghoobian will introduce Died Young, Stayed Pretty at the Wexner Center on Wednesday night at 7pm and then answer questions at the conclusion of the film. Tickets are $5 for Wexner Center members and students, $7 for the general public. Show up early (6pm) to see (and, if so inclined, purchase) art by local rock poster artists Mike Martin, donewaiting illustrator Clinton Reno, and Mike & Drue.

I think SXSW does a lot of things right, but I really wish when they did these updates they would do something to show what the changes were… Either put a * next to new names, bold them, something. Ah well, we’ll have the full schedule soon enough. In the meantime, here’s the list of confirmed bands from SXSW. The amount of bands is up to 1,800.
Is it possible that George Lucas would okay a new Star Wars film for the express purpose of shutting down all the mean things film critics have been saying about him over the course of his second trilogy of Star Wars flicks?

Probably not, but one could make the argument; after all, one of the very few pleasure of the new computer-animated Star Wars: Clone Wars is ticking off the ways it responds to common criticisms of the past few films, proving critics’ assertions wrong.

For example, one of the most common complaints was that the reason the new trilogy was so goddam awful compared to the six-ilogy’s crown jewel, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, was that control freak Lucas was insisting on doing so much himself, instead of turning the scripting and directing over to more competent creators.

Well, Clone Wars is directed by animator Dave Filoni, not Lucas, and it’s screenplay is written by Steven Melching and Scott Murphy. Lucas only gets credit for the “story” (“Okay, so these guys fight these guys, and then they do it again, and then they do it again, and that oughta kill 90 minutes”) and for creating the “characters and universe.”

And you know what? It’s even more goddam awful than the last three movies. So there, smarty-pants critics!

Another criticism was that Lucas had grown so enamored of digital effects and computer wizardry that he was just one step away from not needing actual humans for anything; that some day he could replace all the Samuel Jacksons and Natalie Portmans with digital effects.

Well guess what? This movie is completely actor-free (save voice actors impersonating the actors who played the characters in previous films), and it is not an improvement. Lucas may have sucked almost all signs of life out of his performers in the previous outings, but there was still some spark of humanity even he couldn’t kill; say what you will about least Hayden Christensen, at least he gave a human sense of scale to the proceedings. I found myself longing for his dull monotone and petulant emoting while I watched his hideous, elongated avatar glide gravity-less across the screen.

Filoni and company also manage to keep the weaknesses of Lucas’ last go-round while simultaneously ditching Lucas’ aces in the hole and the results are, predictably, quite tedious.

The galaxy still seems small to the point of claustrophobic; there are only a handful of different planets, that we keep returning to, and maybe a dozen different people, all of whom know one another.

The conflict is still about boring shit—this time, trade routes and treaty negotiations.

And the bad guys are still comical stereotypes with goofy names; this time out, the new villain is Ziro the Hutt, Jabba’s uncle who, for some reason, speaks English with an effeminate southern accent. Think Truman Capote as a giant space slug, covered head to tail-tip in mardi gras make-up.

Now the prequel trilogy had two things going for it that not even every bad filmmaking decision in the whole world couldn’t completely kill. One was the fact that we all knew the ending already and generally liked it, so whatever missteps were made along the way, we knew exactly where it would end up, and had some degree of curiosity about how this toe-headed little tyke would grow up to impregnate Natalie Portman and then turn into space Hitler.

The other was the number of nostalgia buttons that could easily be pushed, sending a signal straight to so many people’s pleasure buttons. That 20th Century Fox music before the opening credit, the scrawl, the John Williams score—these have left indelible impressions in a whole generation of kids who have grown up into the prime film demographic.

Well, they’re all gone. This film’s distributed by Warner Bros, so no Fox drumroll. It’s also apparently aimed at kids (or maybe dumb kids, since the last six films were all aimed at kids too), so no crawl to read at the beginning because if you can read, you probably shouldn’t be watching this movie; the set-up comes in the form of a narrated montage of images instead.

And, sin of sins, no Williams score, or even playing of his themes (not until over the ending credits). It’s been replaced by an instrumental rock and roll score, of all things.

The story is set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, although, more specifically, it’s set between 2003 Cartoon Network animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars and an upcoming CGI TV series also called Star Wars: Clone Wars, making this film essentially just the pilot for a TV series (which is evident in the fact that no conflicts are actually resolved in the film).

The original Cartoon Network series was a traditionally-animated, 2D affair helmed by brilliant animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory), and it consisted of extremely simplified but highly stylized character and set designs in services of blisteringly fast action. It wasn’t terribly ambitious—billed as a “micro-series” each episode was only a few minutes long—and tended to simply show extended action set-pieces. But it was quite good; Tartakovsky knows who to tell a story efficiently and effectively through moving images.

Why he wasn’t involved with the new movie is perplexing, but not as perplexing as the decision to use the flat, cartoony designs of the 2D series and add a third dimension to them, giving the entire film a bad video game look.

As for the story, Still-Not Darth Vader Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and their Clone armies continue to fight against Count Poopy, er, Dooku, his evil apprentice Ventress (introduced in the 2003 TV series) and their comical droid army. And then someone kidnaps Jabba The Hutt’s son, an actually rather cute “Huttlett,” and both sides race to recover it to curry favor with the Hutt clan so he will allow access to trade routes in his sector from troop movements and blah blah blah.

Complicating things for Anakin is the fact that he’s assigned a new padwan learner (that’s nerd for “intern”) Ahsoka Tano, a spunky/bratty orange-skinned teenage girl. They call each other by irritating nicknames (“Skyguy” and “Silks”) as they bicker and try to safely deliver baby “Stinky” the Hutt to his dad.

Like all of the Star Wars films, this one has its moments—I liked the squid-shaped ship that appears for three seconds in the opening montage, and the fight up the side of a sheer cliff wall—but it has fewer moments than any of the others that came before.

It’s hard to say which summer movie suffers the most from the presence of the other: Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Obviously, the latter owes its very existence to the former. When writer/director Stephen Sommers launched The Mummy franchise for Universal in 1999, it bore far more in common with the Indiana Jones cycle than the 1932 Boris Karloff movie it was supposedly a kinda sorta reimagination of.

While George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg looked to old B-movies and serials for inspiration, turning out an A-list B-movie in their Indy franchise, The Mummy was a B-movie version of their A-list B-movie, taken the historical swashbuckling action flick back to its shoddier roots, with star Brendan Fraser’s self-aware charm and an at times nauseating amount of computer animation to separate it as a good-bad movie version of old bad-bad movies.

It was hit enough to inspire a sequel ( 2001’s The Mummy Returns), a spin-off (2002’s The Scorpion King), and, after an aborted attempt at a similar franchise ( 2004’s Van Helsing) a second sequel, this one right on the heels of the long-awaited fourth Indiana Jones.

While Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has its critics and defenders, after so many years of Fraser, Nicolas Cage and even Angelina Jolie handling all the tomb-raiding for old man Harrison Ford, I found the pervading sense of Is-this-all-there-is-ism of Kingdom to be fairly irresistible. “Hell,” I thought, “Fraser could have done that.”

And indeed he does it; right here.

If Mummy hurts Indy, it does so retroactively, by reminding us that we’ve all moved on to other things.

Unfortunately for Mummy, it came on the heels of Kingdom, and bears an uncanny resemblance to it.

As in Kingdom, our lead must deal with a headstrong son with his eyes on his mantle (Luke Ford, playing Fraser’s grown-up son), and the bulk of the film involves the whole family, including Maria Bello taking over the role of Mrs. O’Connell from the moved-on Rachel Weisz, adventuring together. There are even some unexpected plot “twists” that play out exactly as they did in Kingdom.

In The Mummy’s favor, it has lower stakes and expectations, and while it’s plot and script might not be all that great, they at least succeed at meeting those expectations.

Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, XXX) takes over the director’s chair, and he provides the same sorts of old-school thrills with a sense of humor that you would expect, from either a Mummy or an Indy, and in the wake of CGI prairie dogs, monkeys and space aliens of Kingdom, this franchise’s copious amounts of special effects seem less garish than they did the last few times around.

A rather long opening sequence introduces us to new “mummy” Emperor Han (Jet Li), who tried to rule the world and become immortal back in the days of ancient China. He was thwarted by a sorceress played by Michell Yeoh, who cursed him and his army, coating them all in terra cotta and sealing them in a tomb, to sleep for all eternity…or at least until the rest of the characters are introduced.

In 1947, the O’Connells are frustrated adventurers trying to adjust to retired, mummy-less domestic life, and generally failing. They’re called back into action when their son finds that which provides the subtitle of the film, and some evil Chinese military types awaken the Dragon Emperor to re-conquer China.

Together with allies like Yeoh’s immortal magic lady, Isabella Leong’s ninja guardian, John Hannah’s recurring comedy relief character, Liam Cunningham’s drunken Irish pilot and some Yeti, they must save the day, along the way stopping at a Shanghai nightclub, the Himalayas, the lost city of Shangri La and the deserts of China.

It will likely surprise no one to hear that Cohen hasn’t gotten any more like Spielberg in the last few years, and for all the rather imaginative set-pieces and action scenes, few are staged very well. Too enamored with close-ups and fast cuts, Cohen’s camera suggests more action than it ever actually captures, which is really too bad when you have martial arts legends like Li and Yeoh sharing scenes and trading blows.

But despite its failings, this latest Mummy still seems to succeed, if only by virtue of not having to try too hard to be as good or better as its predecessors, and seeming to still have enough vitality to hold its own against this summer’s other movie about an adventuring family of explorers. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a fourth film, as Universal hasn’t quite nuked the fridge just yet.

Given the peculiar ambitions of the Hellboy franchise—would-be blockbuster special effects-driven eye candy horror action comedy—it should come as no surprise that the second go-round, Hellboy II: The Golden Army is all over the place.

The tone shifts from scenes of wacky slapstick to too-earnest melodrama to self-serious superhero movie-isms, and you can practically fell the gears grinding when it does.

It’s to writer/director Guillermo del Toro credit that the entire endeavor never completely stalls out, but manages to zip by thanks to copious B-movie charm, and genuinely amazing creature designs, a movie menagerie that could fill more than one of Pan’s labyrinths.

Ron Perlman reprises his role as the title character, the big red son of Satan with a huge right hand and sawed-off horns who works for the BPRD, a sort gothic version of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ Men In Black. His best friend is fish man Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), his long-suffering girlfriend is pyrokinetic Liz (Selma Blair) and his boss is Jeffrey Tambor.

Added to the mix is another colorful freak a by-the-book agent Johann Kraus (voiced by Seth “Family Guy” MacFarlane, doing a silly German accent).

Meanwhile, a pair of albino elf twins—evil prince Luke Goss and good princess Anna Walton—cause trouble for our heroes. The former is pursuing the latter, who holds the last piece of the maguffin he needs to control an unstoppable army of clockwork killers and take earth back for elfkind or whatever.

Del Toro plays the interpersonal conflicts as seriously as the apocalyptic threat business, but just because there’s a devil man, fish man and elves acting out the same old jokes, sitcom romances and buddy cope movie clichés, it doesn’t really make them any less tired.

Nor does it help that the movie seems to be two or three different movies all trying to eat one another. For example, in one scene of moving, surreal beauty, Hellboy reluctantly kills a beanstalk monster he’s told is a forest god, and, after the slam-bang action, the monster’s blood transforms a portion of the city is turned into a veritable garden of Eden, striking all of characters dumb with awe as they survey the “damage.”

In the next scene, Hellboy loses a fight to a set of lockers possessed by a disembodied German accent, the rain of cartoon blows ringing off his head like punchlines.

While Del Toro (who shares a story credit with Hellboy and company’s creator, comic book artist Mike Mignola) doesn’t quite make such an odd amalgam of genres work, he doesn’t exactly fail either.

His movie is less than the sum of its parts, sure, but there are some downright incredible parts.

The exposition about the elves and the Golden Army is presented as an animated 3-D puppet show that looks at times like a Brothers Quay 300, a visit to a “troll market” bears one of most interesting gathering of movie creatures since Sir Alec Guinnes took Mark Hamill into the Star Wars cantina, and the titular menace’s ability of self-repair leads to some more interesting animation.

The multiplex would be a much better place to visit if more big studio movies failed in the same ways that this one does.

Like seemingly every third big studio movie this summer, Wanted is based on a superhero comic, a 2003 six-issue series of the same title.

In it, thinly-veiled versions of DC Comics supervillians have conquered the world and rule it from behind the scenes, lulling us into thinking that superheroes are just things in comics, movies and bad TV shows from decades ago. Perhaps due to legal reasons—I’m talking some thin, thin veils over those DC characters—the movie adaptation takes practically nothing from its comic source: The title, a couple of characters’ names, two lines of dialogue and…that’s about it, actually.

That in and of itself wouldn’t really be a problem, at least not as problematic as where director Timur “Night Watch” Bekmambetov gets his inspiration instead: The Matrix movies. You would think that Matrix Revolutions would have been the stake through the heart of Matrix mimicry, but here we have a guy with extraordinary superpowers in a business suit jumping through an office building, gun-fu, bullet time, a sleepy-eyed office drone recruited into a war he’s never heard of, and on and on.

That office drone is Wesley Gibson played by James McAvoy as a panic attack-prone pussy who everything always seems to go wrong for. All that changes when he’s recruited by The Fraternity, a thousand-year-old group of Freemason-like weaver/assassins who worship a self-propelling loom called “The Loom of Fate.” Leader Morgan Freeman inspects the textiles with a magnifying glass and decodes its binary patterns to form a hit list; the assassins operate on the “What if you could kill Hitler while he was still too young to grow a moustache?” principle of “kill one, save a thousand.”

McAvoy’s character is recruited by Angelina Jolie, creatively code-named “Fox,” which, come to think of it, describes the entirety of her role pretty well. She subjects him to a training regime that’s a bit like the torture porn version of The Karate Kid, and before you know it he’s shooting bullets along curved trajectories and killing people with convoluted cart stunts. But something’s rotten in this thousand year-old loom-worshiping conspiracy of assassins, and the only way to save the day is by shooting things. A lot.

Wanted is, at its core, a deeply stupid movie, but its main players are more than talented enough to sell this brand of stupid. Many of the action sequences may be derivative of Matrix derivatives, but they’re well conceived and executed enough, and there’s at least a couple of really cool moments (including Wesley’s creative use of an ergonomic keyboard and, hell, the preview audience I saw it with really loved it every time Freeman dropped an F-bomb).

But there’s nothing here that hasn’t already been done much, much better in, say, Shoot ‘Em Up (the action scenes) or Fight Club (the de-pussificiation of modern man throughline), the latter of which seems to have been almost as big an influence as The Matrix.

Last month’s Iron Man was the seventeenth feature film based on a Marvel Comics superhero since 1998’s Blade kicked off the current superhero movie cycle. Of those seventeen, none divided critics, movie-goers or fans as sharply as Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk.

It was by far the artiest and most experimental of them all, but something of a mixed bag—a well-acted, compelling melodrama with an all-special effect superhero that looked embarrassingly unconvincing, a badly botched ending and far too little smashing.

Which perhaps explains why The Incredible Hulk falls somewhere between a remake and a sequel, but far closer to the latter than a former. The entire cast is different, the creators are all different and the only reoccurring characters are the three principle ones. The origin of the Hulk, that which Lee occupied himself with for almost two hours before getting to the smashing, is told here in a minute or two, as flashes of information occurring behind the title sequence.

That’s how badly director Louis Leterrier (a disciple of Luc Besson whose filmography consists of action movies Danny The Dog and the Transporters) wants to make sure this Hulk movie delivers what the last withheld.

His is very much an action movie, albeit one that, like the better superhero movies, manages to be one without falling too hard into action movie conceit traps and occasionally seeming to be about more than just the titular character fighting things.

Our new Bruce Banner is Edward Norton, an actor just as well suited to playing the emotionally troubled as Eric Bana was, but with the benefit of being a lot less dreamy and thus more scientist-y looking. When we first meet him he’s living in Brazil, searching for a cure for his condition, while keeping a safe distance from his former lover Betty Ross (Liv Tyler, whose soft, whisper voice makes her a nice counterpoint to her anger-prone co-star) and trying to elude her father/his archenemy General Ross (William Hurt, stepping into Sam Elliott’s moustache and uniform).

Leterrier lets his Hulk out early and often, keeping the mostly CGI character in the dark as much as possible. It still looks pretty silly, but it’s definitely an improvement over the one Lee’s effects people whipped up, and it’s given a lot more to do, including fight a villain. That would be Tim Roth, who plays a government soldier type who keeps upping doses of “super-soldier serum” until he’s a big, bony monster capable of trading punches with the Hulk.

Some of their battle gets awfully messy in close-up, the way scenes of two CGI characters fighting over CGI backgrounds tend to do, but the previous scenes of Hulk action are much better, and there’s a great deal of Hulk-free action as well, including a pretty fun chase scene through the rooftops of Brazil involving Norton’s Banner.

The script, by serial superhero movie writer Zak Penn and Norton himself, includes some interesting innovations, like having Banner wear a beeping heart rate monitor which makes literal the ticking time bomb nature of the character, and comparing the results of his affliction to a sort of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (Wow, timely!). All while including plenty of tossed off in-jokes, like beefed-up roles for Stan Lee and Lou Ferigno, a Portuguese riff on the Banner’s TV catchphrase and a joke about big purple pants.

What was probably most remarkable, however, is the way The Incredible Hulk was constructed to work as a companion to Iron Man. Stark Industries is mentioned, S.H.I.E.L.D. is mentioned and its logo shown repeatedly, there are nods to comics fans tying the Hulk to Captain America (whose film Penn is also writing), and, in a scene mirroring the after-the-credits Samuel L. Jackson cameo in Iron Man, Roberty Downey Jr. shows up to talk to Ross about a team he’s putting together. In other words, expect Hulk and Iron Man to team up in an Avengers movie in a few years (box office receipts for 2010’s Thor and 2011’s Captain America permitting, of course).

This is the sort of franchise cross-pollination that was and is the bread and butter of Marvel Comics, of course, but this is the first film based on their characters to seriously attempt to emulate that element. A cohesive, shared setting is pretty rare for film in general—the old Universal monster movies and franchise face-offs like Alien Vs. Predator aside—so it should be interesting to see if it can successfully be transported from the one medium to the other, particularly since the stakes are millions of dollars higher in film than in comics.

San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips are the quintessential Terrastock band. Fuzzy, loose around the edges and classically Psychedelic, their unique brand of head music draws equal inspiration from Japanese rock, Kraut, modern minimalism and their lysergic fathers from the American West. To put it simply, their discography is essential listening for anyone even remotely interested in the Psychedelic with a capital “P”. I caught up with mainman Ripley Johnson in anticipation of the first of what will hopefully be many Terrastock slots. This is my top festival pick.

After a flurry of releases in 2007, we’ve had about seven straight months with zero Shjips material. What gives?

We’ve been putting more energy into playing live, which is what we did in the first half of 2007 as well. We have a split 7″ with The Heads coming out, which will be available on our July tour with them in Europe. We’re also finishing up our 2nd LP for Holy Mountain, which will be available in the fall. And our early vinyl releases have been compiled as “Vol 1″, and is out on Holy Mountain in June. There should be another 7″ or two out this year.

Will the split 7″ be available at Terrastock?

The 7″ will only be available on the UK tour. We won’t even have copies until we get there.

Has playing out live more often changed the sound or direction of the band?

Somewhat. But things change with time in general. We just try to keep moving forward.

As far as I can remember, the Louisville Terrastock show will be the furthest east Wooden Shjips have traveled. Are any of the members from this part of the country or have any ties here, or are you strictly a West Coast band?

We played New York last fall, and we just got back from England, so we do get around some. We’re all from different parts of the country originally: Iowa, Vermont, Connecticut, North Carolina. We hope to tour more in the future. It’s just economics.

Your initial jump into the music world was a self-released, nearly anonymous 10″ that was given away for free to anyone who gave you their address, eventually building enough word of mouth to become a huge underground release. Who came up with this idea, and how long did it take for everyone to catch on?

That was my idea because no one knew who we were. I was just interested in getting it out, trying to find an audience. The initial pressing went quickly, due to some blog posts, and because we actually paid shipping to send them out. It wasn’t the most financially responsible strategy, but it accomplished our goal.

Terrastock this year is in Louisville, Kentucky, birthplace of the baseball bat. Are any member baseball fans? The A’s look pretty good this year.

Nash and I are both baseball fans. You can never count out the A’s. They always have scrappy players who work hard. I grew up a Red Sox fan, but I always pull for the A’s too. The Giants I don’t understand. I pull for them, but I have no idea what management is trying to do. They don’t seem to have a post-Bonds strategy.
