A wise man once told me that a Fountain of Youth would cost a Bag of Money.

Listen to BIM THOMAS Rap on Obnox- “Cash Weed Green”

Well, as punk as all the rappers are trying to get they will never be Lamont “Bim” Thomas. Bim played in the Bassholes, and This Moment in Black History. He currently does a lot in Obnox & plays drums for the Unholy Two.. For those that don’t know. These are all hella crucial Ohio garage and scuzz punk bands.

Well, on the above Obnox song, Bim RAPS about how he has been the man forever. My mind is kinda blown. He isn’t the dopest emcee but the backing music is good and you can’t argue with what he is saying. Everyone give Bim some money when you run into him please.

Stalley is on the BET Music Matters Tour with Fly Union, Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul and Jay- Rock. Above is a tour vlog where the Blue Collar Gang capo breaks down to Lupe Fiasco how rapping came to the forefront of his life after the A-Life store he worked at went out of business forcing him have to get on unemployment. Here are a couple joints.  One has Stalley produced by Columbus, Ohio’s Rashad. The second has  Stalley’s Columbus, Ohio friend King Vada over a Pharrell beat.

MP3: Jovan Karcic – “Ride the Wave”

MP3: Ride The Wave 9.22.10

Columbus people know Jovan Karcic from his stints in Gaunt, the Haynes Boys and Burn Barrel. Or maybe his contributions on the first Black Swans album. Or his current gig with the Alwood Sisters. Or maybe as Milan’s brother. Or maybe you just know him as the curly-haired guy behind the counter at coffee shop Yeah, Me Too, which he runs with Divine Fits’ Sam Brown.

What you may not know is that from May through November of 2010, Jovan holed up in his garage studio and made an album titled, appropriately, 2010. He played all the instruments himself, and it’s an engaging, fascinating listen, though tough to describe. “Ride the Wave,” above, is one example, but 2010 is meant to be heard as a full album. Some songs are mostly beats and keys. RJD2 could mess with this thing for hours, but it’s not just a “beat” album by a drummer. Heartfelt songs flow into each other, yet each retains its distinctiveness. As Jovan says on the back cover, “There’s a real thrill to walking into the garage with nothing and walking out with a song or an instrumental… This album represents a passage of time in the year 2010.”

Fitting his private, unassuming, DIY persona, Jovan quietly released 2010 last week on vinyl, mixed & mastered by himself and the Black Swans’ Keith Hanlon, with lacquers cut locally at Musicol and pressed by Cleveland’s Gotta Groove. It comes with a CD, too, which features some longer versions of the songs, and it’s the only place you’ll find the song titles (all of which end in the date on which the song was recorded).

Lost Weekend Records is the only store in town selling the record; look for the cover image above, a pattern cross-stitched by Jovan’s grandmother in 1982. Solo releases don’t get much more personal than this.

MP3: the MHz Legacy – “Spaceship” Ft. Danny Brown (Prod. By Harry Fraud)

MP3: the Mhz Legacy “Spaceship” Ft. Danny Brown (Prod. By Harry Fraud)

The Fader premiered this MHz Legacy song called “Spaceship” . I can say that if you were around in the late 90’s/early 2000’s  Columbus Hip Hop scene, listening to this verse by the late Camu Tao from “U R What U Eat”  that he used to kick outside of Bernies on High Street in Columbus all the time followed-up by a Danny Brown verse over a Harry Fraud beat, on a smart phone while sitting in the front seat of your shitty car in  2012  is a futuristic, and  ghostly experience.

The Mhz were a Columbus rap group consisting of RJD2, Cama Tao, Copywrite, Jakki, and Tage. Camu died of cancer in 2008.  The remaining Mhz  are putting out an album called the MHz Legacy which this song is on. The album drops October 30th on Man Bites Dog Records.
