Oh boy. Haven’t had a reason to post about the Harlem Diplomats in some time. But here we are. Looks like the Theme to this year’s PAID DUES INDEPENDENT HIP HOP FESTIVAL is crews. Dipset, Living Legends, and Heiro have been announced as performers at Paid Dues.

Previously it was announced that Wu-Tang Clan & Odd Future were headlining the annual festival put together by Murs & the Guerilla Union in San Bernardino, CA.

Other line-up additions announced today were Kendrick Lamar, DJ Quik, Psycho Realm and Dilated Peoples. Buy Tickets here.

The PAID DUES INDEPENDENT HIP HOP FESTIVAL–presented by MURS (Living Legends) in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill SmokeOut)–returns to Southern California for its seventh installment on Saturday, April 7, 2011 to the NOS Events Center as an all-day, all-ages event with multiple stages highlighting the most eminent and flourishing independent artists in hip hop. Set to headline this year’s festival is Staten Island’s legendary hip hop crew Wu-Tang Clan and Los Angeles’ 2011 breakthrough collective Odd Future. Additional artists performing over three stages will be announced shortly.

“I am honored this year to have two of the most impactful hip hop collectives in history headline this year’s Paid Dues,” notes festival founder and independent hip hop pioneer MURS. “Wu Tang entered the game in the early 90′s and changed everything. And Odd Future has already made an enormous impression in their own right and just a few years in. To have these two dynamic forces on the same stage on the same night is almost unimaginable but only right that it take place at Paid Dues. Though the news leaked a few days ago, a press release yesterday made it official: The annual All Good Festival has moved from West Virginia to Legend Valley (formerly Buckeye Lake) for its 2012 incarnation, July 19-22.

This is exciting news to me, and for the Ohio festival circuit. Though I’m not a stereotypical jamband enthusiast, the All Good lineups have often intrigued me over the last ten years. The festival has always had a solid undercard of jazzy, funky, worldly, etc. acts that I was interested in. Though the middle of West Virginia wasn’t a particularly long drive away, however, it always managed to be far enough to keep me from going and/or from convincing friends to go. Therefore, now that the fest is much closer, I have hope that the lineup this year will hold the same promise and will be a solid attraction to local fans of a variety of jams. Look out for further updates as the date grows nearer, and also, if you’re very lucky, a sequel to this (don’t worry about reading that, just skip to the comments).

All Good Festival Announces New Location & 2012 Dates

Thornville, OH (November 28, 2011) – After 9 consecutive years in West Virginia, the All Good Festival announces today that the 16th annual event will take place July 19-22, 2012 approximately 30 miles east of Columbus, Ohio at the historic Legend Valley.

Formerly known as Buckeye Lake Music Center, the sprawling festival grounds of Legend Valley have played host to some of the most memorable live performances of the past five decades including half a dozen Grateful Dead concerts as well as tour stops from Lollapalooza, AC/DC, WOMAD, The Allman Brothers Band, and numerous Hookahvilles.

All Good Festival organizers pointed to the convergence of a welcoming rural country vibe and simple venue access, less than a mile from Interstate 70, that will dramatically alleviate the challenges and frustrations of fans and local residents at the festival’s previous site in West Virginia.

“While Marvin’s Mountaintop was a brilliant place for the music and camping aspects of the All Good Festival, getting over 12,000 cars up and down single lane country roads was problematic,” said All Good Festival founder Tim Walther. “We felt that offering a similarly fantastic music and camping experience without the three to six hour wait time for fans and negative impact of traffic on the local community made the move the right decision.”

2012 attendees can count on All Good Festival’s trademark model of no overlapping sets and no hard decisions. Two main stages host over 40 hours of non-stop music from a wide array of genres including the best of rock, bluegrass, electronic, jam, reggae, funk, and more.

Building from its humble beginnings fifteen years ago, the All Good Festival has hosted some of the world’s most talented live performers including Furthur, Primus, Ben Harper, Widespread Panic, The Flaming Lips, The String Cheese Incident, moe. & hundreds more. A few weeks ago, at the Daymon Day Eve Show, two pretty funny spontaneous moments happened.

First, a bachelorette party invaded Freaky Franz’s performance of “I’m A Freak”. (see above)

Then Lev Don(son of Eric Moore of the Godz) was the only rapper in the building not too faded to rap for Nick Tolford & Company’s live cover of Racist Joe’s “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit”.

Donewaiting had some early coverage of this locally born, Ohio-centric festival a few months back, but as details have emerged and the hour drawn near it’s time for an excited reminder. The festival kicks off tonight (8PM) at Bourbon St Cafe with a series of short documentaries and live footage from several historical Columbus and Dayton bands. Following the screenings, the first of three nights of live music shows begins next door at The Summit. The bills for all three nights of music are excellent, showcasing some of Ohio’s premier homegrown talent. Of note is the live debut of RJD2′s Icebird project, a resurgent Kelley Deal in R Ring, and a return to the motherland by Heartless Bastards. I doubt any folks around here need to be introduced to New Bomb Turks, Nick Tolford, Blueprint, EYE, or Envelope, but yeah, they are all (along with others) performing as part of this over the next three nights.

While the collection of musical performances is going to be great, the film offerings are proving to be the real rare treat. There is more happening than I have time to highlight, so I really encourage a review of the festival website for a thorough rundown of what’s showing. Highlights for me will definitely begin on Friday with The Garage Tapes, three never-before-screened short films featuring a musing and performing Tom Waits, as shot by Jim Jarmusch. In the vein of music-related films, the documentary Outside In delves into the often difficult life of Akron artist Alfred McMoore, who was befriended by Dan Auerbach and was the source for Auerbach’s band name- The Black Keys. 45365, a winner of the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW, is a portrait of Sidney, Ohio and describes both the simplicity and depth of life and relationships small-town America. Columbus ex-pat and festival co-founder Eric Mahoney is screening is own contribution- North Dixie Drive, about the eccentricities of one particular Dayton neighborhood and the characters found within it. Also on my must-see list is Oscar-nominated The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant and 4192: The Crowning of the Hit King about the career of Pete Rose. Tickets are still available for all these events, check the festival website or Facebook page for showtimes. Movies will be screened at the Arena Grand Theater (they have beer) downtown. Get on it!

Columbus’s favorite son Envelope‘s upcoming EP, This Could Go Either Way, took a page from early Wu-Tang during the recording and editing process.   The analog Hip Hop record was produced by Jacoti Sommes, and recorded/engineered by Adam Smith at Columbus Discount Recordings so the three of them detail the #rare technology, process, and reasoning used for making an analog rap recording in 2011.

Envelope will perform at the Ohio Film and Music Festival this Saturday in Columbus, October 8th.

This Could Go Either Way will be released October 15th during Envelope & DJ Detox’s tour of Columbus Record Stores.

Early this week we posted Racist Joe’s lost hit “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit” in lieu of a 7 inch of the song that will be handed out at the Daymon Day Parade tonight.
Well, “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit” has already spawn a cover version.
The Corn Puppies are a new group consisting of Ben Branstetter, John Hughes, Rustin and Jake Winston. They haven’t played a show yet, but Daymon was always nice to dudes when they were young so they felt compelled to do this cover. It’s really good. And it’s funny to hear the lyrics sung in Rock N Roll form.
