Michael Carney Featured In New York Times Article About “the Incredible Shrinking Album Cover”

Readers of DW are no stranger to the Black Keys art director Michael Carney.
The New York Times caught up with one of sites’ favorite Grammy Winners, and discussed the affects of Smart Phones, and I-Tunes on album cover design in a declining market.

Except from New York Times Feature The Incredible, Inevitable Shrinking Album Cover

WHEN the album designer Michael Carney submitted his proposed cover for the Black Keys’ album “Brothers” last year, he and the band were a little anxious. Seeking a change from their previous, illustration-driven packaging, which he’d also designed, Mr. Carney devised the simplest of covers: two sentences — “This is an album by the Black Keys. The name of this album is Brothers” — set against a black background

“We thought, ‘Are we allowed to do this?’ ” Mr. Carney recalled of the bare-bones cover, which he also felt reflected a new boldness in the Black Keys’ music. Although its label, Nonesuch, was initially perplexed, Mr. Carney’s fears were ultimately put to rest. “The marketing people said, ‘This is our dream!’ ” Mr. Carney said, and the artwork was a go.

I did this interview with Waka Flocka Flame over a month ago. This is before his album Flockavelli dropped. I had seen Waka live so in the interview when Waka says I am gonna have to take a break by track 4, that is not even a lie.
The energy at Waka’s shows are delivered on Flockaveli.
If you are at CMJ I hope you RSVPd to Waka Flocka Flame at the Fadar Fort Saturday 10/23 in on 38 Delancy St, at Forsyth at 9:05 pm. Royal Bangs, Glasser, and Freddie Gibbs are playing there as well.
If i was in NYC I’d go to that and then Get Right NYC at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn

Publicist:Wes, are you ready to talk to Waka?

Me:Sure

WAKA FLOCKA FLAME:I GO HARD IN THE MUTHAFUCKIN PAINT, N###A.

Me:uh…HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE HARDEST OUT?

Waka Flocka Flame:Oh. We just tryin’ to drop this album.

Me:No one who listened to punk fucks doesn’t fuck with punk anymore more. They all listen to Waka.

Waka Flocka Flame:For real?

Me:Yeah. You fuck with metal or punk? All these rock people they are grown people cryin into their instruments. They sound like they listen to their parents music. All the punk kids I know stopped listening to rock music and they all listen to death metal and Waka Flocka Flame.

Waka Flocka Flame:I am from Atlanta. So I’m just trying to keep it krunk. That is where it comes from.

MP3: Hesta Prynn: Can We Go Wrong

MP3: Can We Go Wrong

I first saw Northern State (Hesta Prynn home base) a bunch of years ago at the Siren Festival @ Coney Island. I thought they were tons of fun, witty lyrics, good stage show, really enjoyed the set. But I have to admit, after a quick run they slipped out of my listening habits, never to be played again.

Fast forward to the present day and we’ve got Hesta Prynn releasing her solo EP, Can We Go Wrong. It’s everything I liked about Northern State (who is on extended hiatus) and more. It’s modern, it’s playful, and really addictive. I’ve played it a bunch of times while toiling away on the F Train and it definitely speeds up my trip.

There’s a few live dates listed on her website. She played Monday @ Mercury and I really regret not going. :(
