Interview: Dawes (@ The LC Wednesday night)

Riding high on a wave of Southern California sunshine and smooth harmonies, Dawes is no stranger to Columbus having graced the Rumba and Basement stages a handful of time during the last 12-18 months. With a sophomore album set to hit stores and the internet the day before the band opens for Bright Eyes at The LC (indoor stage … BOO … this type of music is made to be heard under a starry sky), Dawes already has a summer full of touring plans including opening for the likes of My Morning Jacket, Brett Dennen, and Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Nothing is Wrong is a mature sounding album for a group that’s only been together for about five years. Already, comparisons to artists ranging from Crosby, Stills and Nash, Jackson Browne, and The Band have littered reviews in magazines and on the web and all are justifiable. Without a doubt, there’s been a lot of care put into crafting these folk-rock-inspired tracks and just as you could spot a grunge band from Seattle in the early ’90s after hearing a few guitar chords, you can tell that Dawes hails from the Laurel Canyon area of Southern California within moments of hearing the sweet and warm harmonies on Nothing is Wrong’s opening track, “Time Spent in Los Angeles”.

Tuesday: The Dollyrots @ The Basement

All too often The Dollyrots have come to town as a headlining act – perfect for the couple dozen fans that continue to support the band with each pass through Columbus, but never really expanding their fanbase. For the first time that I can remember, The Dollyrots are pulling into Columbus with not a lot to lose but a ton to gain as they will be providing support for Bowling for Soup. Both bands are heavily endorsed by WNCI though I’m not quite sure that BFS’s fans have any idea who The Dollyrots are. That will change Tuesday night – I just hope The Dollyrots have brought along enough merch to satisfy the masses.

A few weeks ago, The Dollyrots premiered a brand new video for “Rollercoaster,” a mild departure from the trio’s typical POP-punk sound. Here it is.

The Dollyrots occupy the middle slot on the Patent Pending / Bowling for Soup bill on Tuesday night at The Basement. Doors open at 6pm with The Dollyrots hitting the stage around 8:45.

MP3: Scott Lucas & The Married Men – Spaghetti Western (unreleased)

Scott Lucas hasn’t given up on his baby, the 2-man band Local H, but when he found himself with an armful of songs that didn’t quite fit in the post-grunge mode, he grabbed a bunch of friends and recorded a “solo” album under the name Scott Lucas & The Married Men.

MP3: Time and Temperature – “I Know the Caves are Deep”

MP3: Time and Temperature – I Know the Caves are Deep

Val Glenn, aka Time and Temperature, quietly released an EP/mini-album called Cream of the Low Tide last week, and it’s aptly titled — Glenn’s creamy guitar tones accompanying her gorgeous, lilting voice. David Fowler of Moon High recorded the songs, and he kept things nice and simple even as Glenn got a little help from her friends on strings, percussion, lap steel, glockenspiel, flute, etc. Highly recommended, especially on a gray day like today.

As far as I know, this is Time and Temperature’s first digital release after several cassette-only or limited-edition 7″ releases. Download it at her Bandcamp site. She left yesterday for a tour overseas. Dates in France, Belgium, Austria and Germany after the jump. Continue reading
