WOXY on iPhone + Holiday Radio Stream is Back

December 1, 2008 – 8:19 am | Written by Robert Duffy

Joe tipped me off to a really easy way to get WOXY streaming on your iPhone. The first thing you need to do is download the free Fstream application in the App store. Once that’s downloaded, you can search their radio listings for WOXY. To get the holiday stream to work, just cut/paste the URL (http://woxy.lala.com/stream/holiday-mpg64.pls) in directly… You can also cut/paste the WOXY stream URL in directly too… This will make sense when you’re looking at the application.

If you want to just listen to the WOXY Holiday station on your computer, click here. It’s by far the greatest online radio stream for holiday music.

Bun B in Columbus For Free December 17th

December 1, 2008 – 5:49 am | Written by Wes Flexner

I used to live in this duplex in Lousiana. For a brief period a prostitute and her boyfriend lived in the other side of the house. The prostitute would come home and the couple would smoke crack while playing a chopped and screwed version of UGK’s Pocket Full of Stones on repeat. I guess if you are a geeker that sells your body you don’t buy many cd’s. Maybe the hooker would say to her loved one, “Baby one day we will have a pocket full of crack like UGK and I will never have to have sex with another shrimper or off-shore driller again for us to get beamed up again”. Crackheads have fantasies too right?  They prolly just involve large amounts of crack.

As far as my perspective, when I was laying in the dark noticing the stench of burning rock while a loud slowed down version of a song about selling crack echoed thru the walls a sort of scary initial impression of UGK. I would never have guessed that 1/2 of UGK, Bun B would be one of the most  important and open-minded people in rap. I mean besides the Geto Boys, DJ Screw and J-Prince no one matters more in Texas rap than UGK. What blows my mind about the Port Arthur, TX  trillionaire is  that he has done songs with Dizzee Rascal and kicked it with El-p. He was on the official ”Paper Planes” Remix when everyone else was  “Walkin It Out” .  Shit dood listens to Suicidal Tendancies, Black Flag and The Ramones.  Now that’s Gangsta.

This is one of them free Scion Live Metro Shows that Ohio Slayers does but the RSVP feature isn’t on the site yet. I will prolly do another blog when they have the register feature up on the site. Continued »

DJ Przm Video-He Changed His Style Up

November 26, 2008 – 3:33 pm | Written by Wes Flexner YouTube Preview Image

Przm always carried his handycam around. And pretty much he only taped girls. Bru Lei gave me a dvd-r of some of Przm’s footie last year. It was funny because there would be like 34 seconds of performances, and then immeadelty the camera would switch to girls backsides. It wouldn’t even be like attractive girls. But I mean..Shit was funny cause you could P’s thought process like “this rapper.he sucks….WHO IS SHE? Yeah, I see you girl.”

Anyway, Bru edited down some of Przm’s tapes and made the above video. And to Przm’s credit. It’s a video full of ugly white girls.

Thanksgiving Eve: Darker My Love @ The Summit

Darker My Love, The Strange Boys, Eulogies
Wednesday, November 26
The Summit
18 and up; $10 at the door (surcharge for those under 21)

CONTEST TIME - FIRST PERSON TO E-MAIL ATOMICNED@GMAIL.COM WILL BE ON THE GUEST LIST +1

************************************

Ben’s having quite the week with his Benco Presents concerts. Following this past weekend’s Gregory and the Hawk and Marnie Stern shows, L.A.-based psychedelic rockers Darker My Love roll into town for a Thanksgiving Eve show. With a sound that is influenced by bands ranging from the Dandy Warhols and the Stone Roses to the Beatles and the Beach Boys, expect a full-on aural assault tomorrow night.

MP3: “All the Hurry and Wait”
Full album download: Darker My Love (band’s 1st CD)

Darker My Love is keeping an on-line tour diary although there wasn’t an entry the last time they played in town as part of the CD101 summerfest (along w/ Dr. Dog and VHS or Beta among others). I asked bassist/vocalist/heavily bearded Rob Barbato what they would have written about playing that show:

I ripped a ton of White Castles at the show because they had a White Castle there. It was really crazy because we had played a show in L.A. and then flown out directly to Columbus without any sleep. We got there, crashed out for a little bit, and then went to soundcheck. My girlfriend came out to that show because we went to Cape Cod afterwards before all this touring started. It was like our last hurrah. It was really fun and we’re psyched to be coming back to Columbus for sure. We played right before Dr. Dog and I think VHS or Beta played last. At the end of the Dandy Warhols tour we ended up hanging out with the Dr. Dog dudes in Denver because they played on the same night as us. They had the same situation in Columbus as us where they flew in and it was the last weekend they had before all their touring started.

CD101 is a great radio station. It’s few and far between; there are only a few stations in the country that will take as many chances as they do.

Read the rest of the interview here.

Also on the bill:
* The Strange Boys - Ben thinks the Summit/Bourbon St. crowd will LOVE these guys
* Eulogies - Fronted by Peter Walker (owner, Dangerbird Records); will be back in town opening for the Duke Spirit on Dec. 3 (The Basement)

Jay Bennett’s New Album Available for Free Download

November 24, 2008 – 8:53 am | Written by Robert Duffy

MP3: The Engines are Idle

Former Wilco mad scientist Jay Bennett has released his latest album, Whatever Happened I Apaologize, as a free download from Rock Proper. Click here to grab it free and legally.

I was just having a conversation yesterday with my friend Megan about how changes in the industry are real and not just talking points that music geeks obsess over. Bennett might not still be setting the world on fire with sales, but he is a respectable solid name that can certainly sell enough records to make it worthwhile for any small label to work with him.

Which makes me think about local bands who don’t really tour: why aren’t you just releasing your music for free instead of spending $1,500 for 1,000 CDs that you’ll never sell…. If it’s good enough for Jay it’s good enough for you.

From the press release:

Rock Proper is an online music distributor providing free, high quality, album-length downloads with the legal consent of their creators. Please download this music, share it, and enjoy it in any non-commercial way you deem appropriate … In addition to Jay’s record, our site features 10 great reissues for your listening pleasure. Many of these records were recorded at Jay’s studio, Pieholden Suite Sound and document some of the many collaborations of a close group of friends focused on Chicago’s far north side.

Umma Do Me:Rocko Live Video

November 24, 2008 – 4:27 am | Written by Wes Flexner YouTube Preview Image

Rocko, the Atlanta rapper who gave us the insighful line “You like her. You might wife her. I don’t like her so I one night her”, was in Columbus this weekend at Club Static. I was at Moral Tales so I didn’t get to go. But because of the beauty of technology at 3:48 on this clip we get to see Rocko perform “Ummo Do Me”. The sound is kinda bad but I like watching people going bonkers.

OJ Da Juiceman will be at Club Static December 6th.
