Sufjan Stevens announces new Christmas CD/LP boxset “Silver & Gold”

Great news from Asthmatic Kitty. Apparently all those Christmas teaser videos were a harbinger after all. (And no, it’s never too early for Christmas music.) Details:

“Happy Holidays! On November 13, 2012, Asthmatic Kitty Records will release (another!) Christmas box-set extravaganza by the implacable singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens—Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas, Vols. 6-10, a compilation of 5 EPs recorded between 2006 and 2010.

Expanding on the tradition of the first box-set (Songs for Christmas, Vols. 1-5 from 2006), Silver & Gold is a generous document of five more years of holly-jolly jubilee — Christmas caroling, sleigh-bell-ringing, collaborative songwriting — undertaken by Sufjan and his various musical cohorts. Originally intended as gifts for family and friends, these musical snapshots have been re-mixed and re-assembled for the public in an exquisitely-designed gift box containing all the Yuletide pleasures money can buy: Christmas stickers, temporary tattoos, lyric sheets and chord charts, a paper ornament, an apocalyptic pull-out poster, photos, illustrations, and extensive liner notes—a veritable Christmas feast for the eyes and ears.

Happy Holidays from Donewaiting.com, Rachael Yamagata and Mike Viola

Earlier this week we had the chance to hang out with Rachael Yamagata and Mike Viola for a few minutes before their show at The Basement. Seeing as how it’s the week of Christmas, we figured it would make sense to make this a holiday-themed interview.

WARNING: Mike Viola debunks a very, very, very famous Christmas myth – the BIGGEST Christmas myth – during the interview. Parents should NOT allow young kids to watch this unless you want to do some explaining!

Believe it or not, we didn’t notice the cartoon drawing on the couch that Rachael and Mike were sitting on until after the interview was over.

A Town Monster Christmas

When I look back on 2010, I’ll always think of it as the year of big things for Donewaiting, namely the addition of Donewaiting TV where we started featuring video sessions by touring bands recorded at Electraplay Studio. The guys out there – Tony Stewart, James Allison, Nathan Photos, Matt Grady, Jason Sidwell (and any others I may have forgotten) – do such great work filming bands, recording audio, producing videos, and building relationships with bands, publicists, management, etc.

In addition to the awesome work they’ve done in collaboration with Donewaiting, Nathan, James and Matt perform some funkified, electro-keyboard rock under the name The Town Monster and have quietly been releasing tons of music in 2010. While Ghost Shirt took on the “52 songs in 52 weeks” task, The Town Monster recorded a new 3 or 4-song EP every month and posted on Bandcamp.

Last night, The Town Monster held an exclusive viewing party for A Town Monster Christmas, a 20-minute cartoon/holiday special of which we’ve never seen the likes of in Columbus before and we’re very happy to be sharing the video (animated by Nathan Photos) with you.
