Video: Motel Beds – “Dumb Gold” (premiere)

YouTube Preview Image

Dayton, Ohio’s Motel Beds have been in the midst of a creative swell since the late aughts. After six releases in three years, the momentum continues. Following a headlining CMJ set this Friday, Beds will issue Dumb Gold in mid-November. The band’s eighth release is a ten-track collection of angular, idiosyncratic songs, showcasing their remarkable musicianship and appreciation for no-frills rock & roll.

Dumb Gold was engineered by Beds guitarist and sometimes-Guided By Voices engineer Darryl Robbins (see 2012’s Class Clown Spots a UFO). Along with Robbins, the group features a lineup of seasoned Gem City greats – guitarist Tommy Cooper, vocalist P.J. Paslosky, drummer Ian Kaplan, and bassist Tod Weidner. Kelley Deal has also collaborated with Motel Beds in past days.

The band headlines the No More Fake Labels Official CMJ Showcase Friday, October 19 at 11:45 at Lit Lounge. No More Fake Labels will release Dumb Gold on November 13, 2012. Ohio is fortunate to have the Motel Beds.

MP3: Times New Viking – “No Room to Live”

MP3: Times New Viking – No Room to Live

I became a TNV believer a while ago, but this new track blew me away. Really dreamy vibe with milky vocals and even an acoustic base track. And yeah, it’s got a studio sound instead of a 4-track sound. But it’s that super-warm, analog studio sound that CDR‘s Adam Smith (above left) gets out of Musicol. Can’t wait to hear all the songs that came out of the sessions there.

“No Room to Live” is on a handmade, tour-only seven-inch (w/ “Nite & Day”) that you can snag while the trio finishes up the first leg of a tour with that one band from Dayton… (Unfortunately Times New Viking isn’t opening the Guided by Voices show at Outland Live on Saturday, but the band promises they’ll have copies for Columbus.) CMJ and (competing?) #Offline festival appearances soon, too.

And Times New Viking has a new website (and Facebook and Twitter). Web presence! Also looks like Wichita will be handling things in the UK/Europe.

Fanfarlo on the move

YouTube Preview Image

Over the last few months, via the musical grapevine, the band Fanfarlo has kept reappearing on my radar. But it wasn’t until visiting the UK in October that I actually heard them for the first time. I was able to catch them at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, where I was initially only there to catch opening act First Aid Kit. After settling on the fact that I could walk away completely satisfied after their set, Fanfarlo took the stage. While on record they sound a bit harnessed and calculated, their live show illuminates their talent enthusiastically. Created by ex-Swede Simon Balthazar, the six-piece band is based out of London and has been actively touring Europe and the US on their debut record Reservoir throughout 2009. They also just played CMJ and have again been added to the SXSW 2010 roster.

Balthazar sings with a sweet and bold voice (similar to that of Beirut’s Zach Condon) and is backed by an amazing group who each play multiple instruments to form a big full sound, reminding me of the Arcade Fire. Have a listen, but more importantly, check out some live footage.

Fanfarlo has recently been recording a number of “Laptop Sessions” where they perform covers. You can find those here, as well as some music videos.

MP3: Summer Girl by Family of the Year

Family of the Year (pictured above) joins donewaiting.com buddy Alina Simone for a Whitesmith Entertainment showcase that is free to the public – no badges required..

Family of the Year‘s melodies are stunning… I can’t wait to hear them live. Be sure to listen to more songs (or download their debut EP) over here.

It’s no secret that we love Alina Simone. Donewaiting.com’s little record label, Sunken Treasure Records, released a split 7″ with Alina and The Black Swans a few months ago. More details here.

Alina’s childhood friend Eugene Mirman recently posted an MP3 of Alina’s new, soon to be released album over at Magnet Magazine.

Dovecote CMJ Party

Blueboogers

We just added Justine D! Justine is a NYC veteran well known for her DJing and her late party MOTHERFUCKER. Dave P, another veteran of the scene, when he’s not too busy on DJ tours with Soulwax, 2manydjs, or Simian Mobile Disco he can be found in NYC throwing his highly acclaimed Fixed NYC party, or in Philly throwing the longest running and much revered party, Making Time. If that isn’t enough to wet your whistle, try this on: ACID GIRLS! Acid Girls, on a full US tour with Jokers of the Scene, are making a pit stop to lay down some of the electro jams you’ve heard spread across the blogosphere and posted in record shops across the world lately. They’ve just released a single on Kitsune and another on IHEARTCOMIX and are ready for you on the dance floor. Now that your whistle is wet, we also have local greats Finger on the Pulse DJs. You’ve seen them, you love them, and you’ve woken up the day after swearing you’d never drink again after partying with them.

This party is free and it’s first come first serve, so get there early!

YOU NEED TO RSVP HERE AND TO RSVP@DOVECOTERECORDS.COM

Next week is CMJ.

We used to throw parties where our bands would play and we’d all get drunk. Ah those were the days? While yes Tim Williams is playing some shows. We’re not doing an official showcase. FROWNY. FACE.

OR SO YOU THOUGHT (sort of?)

We’re still allowing everyone to get fucked up because we’re throwing a goddamn dance party with the RADDEST DJs (Dave P, Acid Girls! how did we land them?!) we love and ToNz Of BoOzE. We’ve named the party “Blue Boogers,” you figure it out. We don’t condone said behavior.

Party will take place on the second floor of 34 Ave A (between 3rd and 4th Streets). This space is fucking AWESOME. It is above the bar “Aces And Eights” (HOLD YOUR ANGSTY SIGHS) which is normally not the coolest place, but the owner for some reason decided to deck out this floor and never use it. It is in fact a club. With a KILLER soundsystem, lights, craziness, but it only holds 120 people. Soooooooo YOU NEED TO RSVP TO RSVP@DOVECOTERECORDS.COM.

We are serious. We will not help you on tuesday if you forget to RSVP. We might be friends, but we probably wont be conscious.
