Readers of DW are no stranger to the Black Keys art director Michael Carney.
The New York Times caught up with one of sites’ favorite Grammy Winners, and discussed the affects of Smart Phones, and I-Tunes on album cover design in a declining market.

Except from New York Times Feature The Incredible, Inevitable Shrinking Album Cover

WHEN the album designer Michael Carney submitted his proposed cover for the Black Keys’ album “Brothers” last year, he and the band were a little anxious. Seeking a change from their previous, illustration-driven packaging, which he’d also designed, Mr. Carney devised the simplest of covers: two sentences — “This is an album by the Black Keys. The name of this album is Brothers” — set against a black background

“We thought, ‘Are we allowed to do this?’ ” Mr. Carney recalled of the bare-bones cover, which he also felt reflected a new boldness in the Black Keys’ music. Although its label, Nonesuch, was initially perplexed, Mr. Carney’s fears were ultimately put to rest. “The marketing people said, ‘This is our dream!’ ” Mr. Carney said, and the artwork was a go.

When I sat down to recount my year, I hadn’t even really registered what I got to see. All my friends moved away. I pretty was miserable.

I spent the majority of the year hanging out by myself.

But now looking back, I was really fortunate this year.

I got to see the Black Keys spread love and become one of the biggest rock bands in America. RJD2 played our 7 Year Anniversary. Jay Electronica came to town and did a really intimate show then got signed 7-8 months later by Jay-z to Roc Nation. I solicited Wavves’ opinion on Psychedelic Horseshit. I witnessed what Dame Dash’s guy, Currensy ,was doing the night Jay Electronica signed with Jay-z. I talked to Bone after a nationally publicized arrest. Well, read away if you want.

The image source of this tattoo is from the cover of Chulahoma, an ep by the Black Keys. It is on the body of a female that had a family member die of cancer. The finger pointing it out belongs to Mary Stormer, Key’s drummer Patrick Carney’s mother. Mary Stormer’s son and Patrick’s brother, Michael created the image that is tattooed on this girl. The girl got this tattoo because Chulahoma was what got her through hard times.

The tribute to Junior Kimbrough IS a blues record.

Mary Stormer, and I explained to the girl that the band would really appreciate this. Mrs. Stormer told me to take a picture and send it to Michael. The band was onstage so they couldn’t give the girl a hug.

I told her a story about a friend of the Black Keys in Akron that had passed, and the Keys perspective on music when it pertains that.

But this is part of the reason why this show was so special and I have love for the Black Keys . The Carney brother’s mom, dad, step-mom, and quite a few others were hanging around , visibleyhappy at their family’s success. So from the opening moment when the Keys had GZA’s Liquid Swords playing to ,what sounds like the owner of the lonely hearts change up in Tighten-Up , to the show’s finale “Til I Get My Way” it was just a real warm feeling.

It was just a celebration. Made you kind of forget the show sold out a month early and the Keys were in the process becoming one of the biggest rock bands in America. Everyone was just nice.

I caught up with Dan Auerbach backstage. And the illest thing about Dan was that the conversation was about Sean Price and rappers like that. Dan is a straight-up Hip Hop head.

It was like talking to The Catalyst. More on that later.

Everyone was so normal in their happiness. After the show, we all went back to Tip Top. Everyone was real normal in their happiness. Pat asked about various Columbus things. The Carney brothers’s dad James, asked about weedsteeler.com and told me stories about working with Chuck Klosterman at the Akron-Beacon Journal. On some other circumstances we could’ve all watched a Woody Allen movie together.

Envelope said on CD101′s Andy MAn-a-thon that ”we had better start valueing and honoring the people we lost because they make our city great. We certainly arent gonna be known for our mountains and good weather.”

And Daymon Day is as simple as that.
Read more about this organic tribute to local culture here.

(And for the record Tony grew-up in a strong democrat home. Myself, I’m a vegan whose politics are fairly obvious .

Daymon being a Republican is what made him a unique individual. I once questioned him on it, and I realized it’s fairly racist for white people to project their political leanings on non- whites. The world is way too complex to impose liberal missionary behaviors on your friends.

But it is not a Republican or Libertarian Parade. Unless it offends you then, its actually a T-Party event And we got Sarah Palin in booty shorts.)

This show was right after Flesh N Bone got arrested.
I went and accidently got drunk with Bone, and started bringing up things that weren’t my business.

7. J Cole- Newport Music Hall November 3rd

Jay-z’s protege J-Cole played a BET Music Matters show at the Newport. The North Carolina Native had two keyboard players providing warmth and melody, he played a beat machine at times and was backed by DJ Dummy.

J Cole’s polished performance really made him stand-out compared to every up and coming rapper I saw this year. It all made more sense why Jigga is investing time in Cole.

After the show, Cole kicked it with me and answered a few questions. The first beat he made, he chopped up a Shyne sample. Things like that.

8.Wavves- Skullys September 15th

Click here to view the embedded video.

We have all read the Psychedelic Horseshit interview about Wavves. So when Wavves played 4 blocks from my house, I figured why not go see what Nathan Williams of Wavves made of all that. So after the show I stated my name and a couple names, Nathan, Stephen Pope and Billy Hayes invited me to sit at their table. I asked Nathan if he felt weird about being in Columbus. His response was, “because of Matt(of Psychedelic Horseshit)? Naw. Those guys don’t like me. But they’ve (Stephen and Billy used to play with Jay Reatard) have both toured with all those groups. It’s not a big deal.”

Nathan and I then talked about Curren$y, the first RJD2 album, Aceyalone , and Rick Ross calling himself Big Meech on BMF. I had written on donewaiting that the Wavves song Convertible Cacoon reminded me of Cali Swag’s “Teach Me How to Dougie”. Nathan told me that was because they added an 808 over the regular drum.

Stephen and Billy made Nathan load all the equiptment which I thought was interesting…

Other notable thing, is that Nathan, Billy, and Stephen were unaware that the booking agent had rejected Psychedelic Horseshit’s offer to open the show.

I’m not saying this to back Wavves or bash anyone.

Just a moment in time.

Anthony Porter, who if you live in Columbus you probably know he is, was there. If not, Anthony allegedly stabbed someone outside of Cafe Bourbon Street. I said allegedly because I am not a lawyer and do not know how to write.

I introduced Nathan Williams and Anthony to each other because neither one of them are popular at Bourban Street.

As far as why I talk to Anthony Porter? I feel like he turned himself in, and is going to jail. It’s not like there isn’t punishment and reprucussion looming. I am not advocating a human being hurt by any means.

So basic human compassion states don’t leave some troubled person with no one to talk to. I think its similar to sending books to prisoners or writing someone in jail. Maybe I’ve read the Autobiography of Malcolm X too many times, and actually internalized Upski’s writings.

As far as Nathan Williams, I can see both sides of it. He was influenced by Columbus music, so there is always an idea of what happens when someone takes from you without being involved with what help build it.

And not executing in a manner that you enjoy.

On the flip-side, his new record doesn’t sound like Columbus stuff anymore. And my biggest assumption is both Nathan Williams, and Psychedelic Horseshit are probably more concerned making music, and doing right by themselves.

Horseshit does have a new album it’s coming out on a good label.

9.Curren$y-Skullys November 12th

Click here to view the embedded video.

This was an interesting show because it was on the night of Jay Electronica signing with Roc Nation. Currensy is down with Dame Dash, so unless Oprah and Farrakhan step in I would imagine this was the public ending of Center Edge Territory.

Especially with Mos Def already off with Kanye and absent from 24 Hour Karate School. But what do I know? It was funny because from Skullys, Currensy twittered at Jay Electronica, “I dunno boss. I’m staying here”.

Besides the National question of allegiances, there was an Ohio conflict. Currensy had to navigate his friendships with Cleveland’s Chip the Ripper, and Stalley. There is underlying rumored tension between the two. The rumor is Chip doesn’t like Williamsburg residant Stalley trying to build his presence in Ohio. Currensy kept saying, “I’m cool with Chip. I swear”.

It is not like this is something that would make people act horrible. Just some Hip Hop on my block type ish.

And the final conflict was that the 3rd and Royal Columbus had a disagreement which led the 3rd jumping off the show.

At the end of the day, Currensy is good at rapping about weed. So his fans came to see him do that and prolly weren’t worried about rest.

11.Jonsi Newport Music Hall

Click here to view the embedded video.

Jonsi’s beautiful sound, and backdrop made the Newport seem like the Wexner for a night. Photos here.

And I don’t listen to Sigur Ross or Jonsi. But I have a hunch Kanye does. Just from some of the magic realism in his Runaway movie.

12.Camu Tao-King Of Heartz Release Party

Metro of Smash, and El-P celebrated this life and music of Columbus rapper/producer Camu Tao at Skullys.

El-P helped put out Camu’s King of Hearts on Fat Possum Records.

I think this was prolly the most high profile Columbus release this year.

More about Camu from ELP here

During DRI I watched some dude jump real high in the air and elbow drop a bouncer in the head.

During Cannibal Corpse I watch a Cleveland graffiti writer jump off the side railing and crowd surf.

Show was dope in itself. But what do Bell Hooks, a midget, Copywrite, the 3rd and Michelle Alexander have to do with it?

A few weeks ago we celebrated the 4th annual Daymon Day here in Columbus. We had a basketball tourney, tribute mural, emcee battle, parade and a rowdy dance party. We got our Rucker park on and then brought it into the streets.

For those that aren’t familar with Daymon Day but like things perhaps reading this article before or after viewing the following videos and pictures might give you some background info.

Click here to view the embedded video.

This video shot by A.J.(i think) shows the parade.

Watch it if you think marching 300 plus people in the middle of the road to Black Sabbath, Dilla, Cam’ron, M.O.P. , DJ Przm, Camu Tao, Jim Jones,Pharoah Monche and Racist Joe instrumentals to honor their fallen loved ones on an OSU gameday sounds interesting.

Photos taken by Danielle Kline that show a different detail after the jump.

I missed the basketball tourney that CJ Townsend organized because I was out in the burbs buying Montana’s for a couple doods’ outline colors for one of the graffiti murals. As for the basketball contest, I guess Central City Recordings brought in some ringers and won the game.

The other big story from the tourney, was Team Weedsteeler was narrowly defeated by the Grip 14-1. The other highlight was that Ron House played for Agit Reader(i think) and appeherently was a fierce competitor.

I got to the Park right before the rap battle between Zero Star and EC Vol. The battle was in front of the newly restored Tuttle Park handball court mural.

A. Kern and Ender did a wonderful job covering up the alterations made by tags, drawing of penises and the weather that had overtaken the iconic mural orginally meticulously painted by B. Jones, S.Zook, G. Sparano and D. Duncan that expressed both graffiti writer’s civic pride and their often underestimated abilties.

(A. Kern is the young muralist that painted the Blue Danube, every Daymon mural, and the bathrooms of Milkbar among other things. Two of his murals were included in the Dispatch’s recent Top Ten Murals in Columbus.)

Unlike the cityscape that A.Kern fixed, the bottom pieces of N.E.W.S. were dissed beyond repair, so Ender created a universal font that honored our cities fallen Hip Hop heros, Daymon Dodson, DJ Przm, and Camu Tao.

The mural, in its orginal form, had burners of the words, North, East, West, and South, directing the viewer to the idea that the kids that paint the city with letters could literally paint the city to the letter. The letters were on the original mural were intentionally painted in highly stylized graffiti form next to an amazing rendering of the cityscape of downtown Columbus.

The idea of those involved with the graffiti restoration process was that deviating from a graffiti font was ok. The point that letters can be as technical challenging as photorealistic scenery had be proven by the mural’s original artists.

The muralists were restoring the idea that graffiti writers love their city and interact with their community.

So maybe the actual mural wasnt exactly restored to exact original form.

But the remembrance of icons and their contributions to our city is important to our city’s culture and identity development. Graffiti was used to put this back in people’s minds.

A legible font conveyed this sentiment by being more viewer accessible.

(plus the back wall has 18+ burners on it, painted by BSA,PBJ, ESE,IOK, 3WA and TFC doods.)

This set the stage for a rap battle between Zero Star and EC Vol.

Danielle Kline made a dinosaur float so that the Daymon Dodson doll would have somewhere to sit during the parade.

This is Jacqueliene Arias, a journalist, artist and filmmaker in town from NYC because of the festival on Gay Street downtown. She contacted me via facebook because she is making a documentary and wanted to talk about Columbus art and culture. So I picked her up.

She was really impressed by what she saw at ID09 on Gay Street. She expressed a notion that it was shame the events were the same day. I told her a real city can support two festivals in the same day.( Which Columbus did easily)

I told her that organizers of ID09 did try to include us.

However our parade is greatly contingent on having mural space to paint tribute walls, and the spectacle of marching in front of OSU celebrating football fans on gameday on OSU campus.

Daymon loved absurdity so trumping OSU football is prolly the best thing we could ever do.

Picture being a freshman at OSU:

You are on a porch playing beerpong. So pumped that the Buckeyes just won and you have a case of Natty Light to toast these glorious times..

You look over, and OMG, in the middle of the street are 300 people of every background possible except your own, marching to the instrumental Dipset’s “What’s Really Good” while chanting Racist Joe.

Might make you spit out your shitty beer, and create a memory

(and at least we had a painting of downtown’s skyline)

rofl

The parade concluded on 5th and High where the crowd sung Daymon’s hit song, “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit”.

I was terrified because Daymon’s family were there and the song is explicit.

To my suprise/relief Daymon’s mom knew the words. She giggled during and did not sing the “bitch” or “shit” parts. It was laughshh you don’t laughshh. It was beautiful that she had discovered and enjoyed that aspect of her son.

There will be basketball, mural painting, dejay’s and a cookout from 3-8pm culiminating with the highlight of any god-fearing/foreign car stearing humyn’s week, the Daymon Day Parade. The parade leaves at 8 and journeys down the scenic campus of the Ohio State University until it reaches community hub, the Milk Bar, which is located on 5th and. High. There will be an after-party at a currently undisclosed location featuring DJ Lo Zone, True Skills, DJ Detox, and DJ Pos 2. All are welcome. We regret that this is the same day as Independents’ Day downtown, but this the day that we confirmed with Daymon’s family months ago. We are sure everything is going to be ok. All welcome.

Early on Johnny Cashola played records. Which was cool of him cause he came straight from the Troy/OSU game to bring turntables and friends. But when Daymon’s family showed up, Funky D took over because songs with cursing didn’t seem appropriate. We all hugged the block. Funky D played old Soul and Motown. It made the block hug us back.

With vintage R+B permeating in the air; it was realized what could make old music relevant: playing it threw a large pa so it could be heard on the cities streets where the youth cavort. Wallrides to the Whispers?

When Envelope wasn’t talking to cops(about parade routes, and to build general rapport), he walked around with a megaphone, and made bantar at all pedestrians. He would ask a simple question. “Do you like parades?”

Ashley Brooks and friends brought candy. Mardi Gras in September, Bee.

Various people made variousDaymon influenced gear. IGLU’s Gary Dillion wearing a “No Homo” shirt referencing the below picture of Daymon.

I spraypainted my shoes Peanut Butter and Jelly Green. Daymon collected Chuck’s and was involved with the Grand Theft Auto joke.(q.what would be an obnoxious and an intolerable example of hip hop cultures influence on today’s youth ? a. a fake/joke gang who took their colors from a video game)

Franz of IGLU, T-Tops and Weedsteeler imitating Daymon’s “Credit Risk” shirt. Green once again in effect mode.

Kevin Merryman drew a Burning Man-esqe homage to Daymon.

Back to hugging the block. It continues to hug back.

+

Two random juggalos ran -up on us. This one had broken his hand after punching his fridge cause he was mad. They left to buy cigerettes, and came back to join the parade even though they didn’t know Daymon. My assumption is that the parade was prolly the only time outside of ICP events that anyone has ever been nice to them.

Afterwords, they said they are coming back every year.

Skaters, and a Benz line up to lead the way.

At some point there was a discussion about how the bulk of Daymon’s humor right now would be centered around having a crush on Sarah Palin.

The Parade arrives at the Gay Street Festival. Loud and gregariously.

Vile Gash performs misanthropic anthems that entertain this crowd that gathered to celebrate friendship and community.

The Catalyst performs. He invited Dirtnap onstage to be his hype man with a bullhorm. Dirtnap was Racist Joe’s hype man. So Bo knows well.

Detox comes back on. Plays a Black Sabbath armed blend into “Crunk Music” by Dipset.

The Gay Street portion ends abruptly and appropriately when a group of hardcore kids could’nt contain themselves during the Fonoslut Remix of “Santana’s Town”. It’s Dipset chanted over “Nothing To Lose” by Killed In Action. The hardcore kids jumped up and down. Their weight caused cinderblocks to break.

Mayor Colemen/Katie Brennen at Tip Top.

The night ended with a dance party at Carabar. Danielle Kline repped pretty hard. She walked up to people, and would say, “I love you, no homo“. (note. no one is homophobic. The phrase is just ridic.) She later supplied me with water balloons which allowed me to make it rain literally during Cashola’s, and Detox’s sets.

There was an impromptu Envelope performance because two members of Weedsteeler managed to break bodyparts during the week. Envelope forgot his lyrics 4 times, and freestyled in the spirit of things.

Night ended with DJ Tru Skills turning Carabar into a discoteque.

All, and all people everyone I knew was a good-spirited, participatory, and hilarious. So Daymon Day functioned correctly.

If you are a human being and consider yourself someone who likes culture, art, music or anything….. Basically, if you like anything at all and aren’t a terrible unhappy person for chrissakes watch the above video. It’s of last year’s Daymon Day Parade. Even if you are a terrible, unhappy person still watch the above video because maybe it will brighten you day. Seriously watch the video.

Watched it? Way better than any desription I could ever give.

Anyway, the 3rd Annual Daymon Day Parade is upon us honoring Racist Joe aka So What born Daymon Dodson. We also tip our hats to Przm, Camu Tao, Heist, Phrite, Nasty Nate and anyone else that has passed away. This isn’t just about Daymon. It’s about making something negative into a joyous moment. Your devotions will find a vehicle.

The parade is starting at 5th & High this year. We were unable to secure a permit for Tuttle Park like previous years. But the good people involvedwith the Gay Street Festival downtown were nice enough to extend a stage to us so people could gather outdoors after the parade.

On that stage will be performances by Youth Attack’s Vile Gash, and The Catalyst (ODOT/Thought Set) DJ Detox and Tru Skills will hold the alley down between acts. The festival is free.

So this year the parade starts at 5th and High. It leaves promptly at 6. Our good friends at Milk Bar have offered us space to assemble. We will have dejays set up there at around 4. Milk Bar isn’t a pretentious boutique. It’s also not a bar. So kids are a ok. So everyone please feel comfortable.

Anyway. Columbus loved Daymon. Parades are fun. Walking in the middle of High Street during a game day only comes once a year. So even if you didn’t know Daymon you can feel free to show up. He made everyone at ease when he was out. So it’s that spirit that will be in place. It’s about enjoying life. Bring an instrument or drum to make noise. We are trying to have a marching band. If the marching bad turns out either atonal like a No Wave performance or as fluid as a New Orleans funeral band regardless it will be tremendous.

Here are a couple MP3′s by the artist performing after the parade. They are abrasive but fitting for this paticular legacy of Columbus Music.

Two weeks ago, on September 16th, some of us in Ohio celebrated the second annual Daymon Day, honoring our friend Daymon Dodson, who many have dubbed “the Patron Saint of Indie Culture” in Columbus. The past couple years have had Ohio’s Hip Hop and Graffiti communities suffering some severe losses. In addition to Daymon, producer mc DJ Przm, neighborhood legend Nasty Nate, as well as graffiti writers Heist and Phrite all passed away, leaving various intertwined cultures in a similar mourning mindstate. So we figured might as well acknowledge the impact of these and other lost loved ones, and celebrate their lives.

This years festivities included a cook-out, a graffiti mural, a Parade, and a Show. Participants included the Droids Crew, Pat Carney of the Black Keys, PBJ, Necropolis, RJD2,Blueprint, Spitball, O.D.O.T., SA Smash, IOK, AKE, BSA, Vomitrocity as well as hundreds of friends and family members.
