MP3:the Corn Puppies “B*tch You Don’t Know Sh*t 2″

MP3:The Corn Puppies “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit 2″

Early this week we posted Racist Joe’s lost hit “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit” in lieu of a 7 inch of the song that will be handed out at the Daymon Day Parade tonight.
Well, “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit” has already spawn a cover version.
The Corn Puppies are a new group consisting of Ben Branstetter, John Hughes, Rustin and Jake Winston. They haven’t played a show yet, but Daymon was always nice to dudes when they were young so they felt compelled to do this cover. It’s really good. And it’s funny to hear the lyrics sung in Rock N Roll form.

MP3: Racist Joe aka Daymon Dodson “B*tch, You Don’t Know Sh*t!”

MP3: Racist Joe “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit!”

At the 6th Annual Daymon Day Parade on September 17th, we will be handing out 7 inches of Racist Joe’s cult hit song Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit produced by DJ Bombay.

Song is hilarious as Daymon raps about mythical sexual exploits that resonate all the way out to Polaris over the theme music to Soap.

And during times like these, who can’t relate to the phrase, “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit!”?

Thanks to Michael Carney for designing the label and cover. Also special thanks to Mus-i-col for the quick turn-around on pressing, and Carabar for being supportive of this record from day 1.

After the jump watch people sing “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit” on the corner of 5th and High at the end of the 2009 Daymon Day Parade.

Review: Yeasayer in Columbus

Ahmed Gallab image courtesy Full Frontal Fashion

Having seen Yeasayer a couple of times before, I knew what to expect to a certain degree. The words I would use are similar to those which describe their sound: psychedelic, heart-thumping rock music that teeters on the brink of insanity. This mood they create in their live set has to be part of the reason they’re so well liked by other current mega-indie acts like MGMT and Vampire Weekend. It’s music that makes you dance, drink, take drugs (or feel like you have)… a real experience. A performance that makes my imagination wander is the real test to how remarkable a band is live. Makes it easy to see why their music videos always seem to have escaped from a third dimension.

Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of the performance was Ahmed Gallab’s (aka Sinkane) public allegiance to the city of Columbus. Not only did he step back on stage before the encore and talk about his time spent here, but he kicked off their last song by stating “This is all for Daymon Dodson.” People like Ahmed are why I love the Columbus music community.

What’s Really Good Columbus?!

Obviously the big story today is the OSU football game. Throw your rah-rag up.
Well, after the bucks win, whether you head to a parade, a festival, a BW3 or take a nap, try to come out to the Daymon Day Parade Afterparty.
Columbus legends The Fonosluts and DJ True Skillz will team up with Get Right Columbus, CJ Townsend and Iyeball of Fly Union to do it like they use to do , and continue to.
New School x Old type jump-off.
CJ and Iyeball will be coming returning from New York tonight where Iyeball’s rap group Fly Union and CJ just performed at Santo’s Party House for a BET Music Matters Showcase.
Daymon was a mentor for Fly Union, obviously a member of the Fonosluts, and he was also in BSA along with the Get Right Columbus fam.
Daymon would be proud of both Get Right, Fly U’s success, and be stoked to see Hip Hop culture in Columbus flourishing.(this is just the tip of the iceberg.)
So it should be fun.

RIP DJ PRZM….MP3:DJ Przm Presents the Letter People

(Via Get Right Columbus)

MP3:DJ Przm Presents the Letter Peopl
e

Today is the Three Year Anniversary of DJ Przm passing. Cashola uploaded one of Przm’s classic compilation’s the Letter People to the Get Right Blog about an hour ago.
Przm would produce 18 song albums and sell them at the Fonoluts Hip Hop night until he lost interest in them, and then these cds would dissappear. I think 50 copies of the Letter People existed and I’ve had it stolen from me twice, and i probably stole a copy from someone at some point. So i am really happy Cashola uploaded it.
Pos can correct me, but this cd is prolly from 2000-2001.
The cd itself is raw, minimal Hip Hop that invokes but doesn’t bite Wu Tang, Pharoah Monche if he was an asshole and Mobb Deep.
For younger doods, imagine 30 black doods(a couple white doods) that could rap, dress, pull a fly girl, drink and fight partying at Bernie’s and on like Blake and Patterson.(OSU campus for non-Columbus people.Which is now Twee or jocks.)
No wonder this was part of an international movement.
And P was their ring leader rolling around in Daymon’s white van.
if you want to test drive a song, I suggest track 12 “Mmm Brilliant” that features Jakki, Flip the Early Riser, Copywrite and Przm boasting the ability to do some terrible things to people then let that song roll in to track 13.
But all 18 songs are classic which is funny that Przm could just churn these out seeing it takes cats 2 years to just get mixtapes out over other people’s instrumentals. And we thought P was lazy..
The CD features MHZ, 3MS, Spitball, Met,Daymon, and a zillion other doods going in on Przm’s gritty production.
If you ever intend to speak on Columbus rap please download this and listen.

Pos’s description:

Well, in my attempt of collecting everything columbus related, this cd came into my collection soon after it hit the streets. Not sure of the year but I would have to say it was in ’03 or ’04 when this was released.
Nicotime held most of the production on the comp. Meta4ce produced tracks 4 & 7. Furious styles prodcued tracks 5, 8, and 16. mixed by daniel and nicotime.
What makes this cd so great is all the appearances which range from people that don’t rap, rappers alter-egos, people that use to be cool and then found out they weren’t, and people that rapped that was hanging out while a song was being recorded.
Really wasn’t a serious release. I mean anything with wes rapping on it is either worth a good listen or it’s a classic. Those are your only 2 categories it can go into. If you like bagface5 or powerbar, you will like this. It’s alot of remixes of songs previously released with BSA’s added flavor.
so take it for what it is. the recording/mix downs are pretty rough but it’s fun to listen to.

(BSA is a graffiti crew I started in 1994. It has had zillion different eras, groupings and outputs. It was also the name of a building I lived in for awhile the burberry shire armes. hence the name of the tape.)
cover was done by Dan Mcmahon. He did the Soul Position cover for 8 Million Stories and used to lay out a zine I put out called Broken Halo.
i’m on three songs and this tape shows its good i never pursued rapping.

Daymon Day 2009 Photos & Videos

A few weeks ago we celebrated the 4th annual Daymon Day here in Columbus. We had a basketball tourney, tribute mural, emcee battle, parade and a rowdy dance party. We got our Rucker park on and then brought it into the streets.

For those that aren’t familar with Daymon Day but like things perhaps reading this article before or after viewing the following videos and pictures might give you some background info.

YouTube Preview Image

This video shot by A.J.(i think) shows the parade.

Watch it if you think marching 300 plus people in the middle of the road to Black Sabbath, Dilla, Cam’ron, M.O.P. , DJ Przm, Camu Tao, Jim Jones,Pharoah Monche and Racist Joe instrumentals to honor their fallen loved ones on an OSU gameday sounds interesting.

Photos taken by Danielle Kline that show a different detail after the jump.

I missed the basketball tourney that CJ Townsend organized because I was out in the burbs buying Montana’s for a couple doods’ outline colors for one of the graffiti murals. As for the basketball contest, I guess Central City Recordings brought in some ringers and won the game.

The other big story from the tourney, was Team Weedsteeler was narrowly defeated by the Grip 14-1. The other highlight was that Ron House played for Agit Reader(i think) and appeherently was a fierce competitor.

I got to the Park right before the rap battle between Zero Star and EC Vol. The battle was in front of the newly restored Tuttle Park handball court mural.

A. Kern and Ender did a wonderful job covering up the alterations made by tags, drawing of penises and the weather that had overtaken the iconic mural orginally meticulously painted by B. Jones, S.Zook, G. Sparano and D. Duncan that expressed both graffiti writer’s civic pride and their often underestimated abilties.

(A. Kern is the young muralist that painted the Blue Danube, every Daymon mural, and the bathrooms of Milkbar among other things. Two of his murals were included in the Dispatch’s recent Top Ten Murals in Columbus.)

Unlike the cityscape that A.Kern fixed, the bottom pieces of N.E.W.S. were dissed beyond repair, so Ender created a universal font that honored our cities fallen Hip Hop heros, Daymon Dodson, DJ Przm, and Camu Tao.

The mural, in its orginal form, had burners of the words, North, East, West, and South, directing the viewer to the idea that the kids that paint the city with letters could literally paint the city to the letter. The letters were on the original mural were intentionally painted in highly stylized graffiti form next to an amazing rendering of the cityscape of downtown Columbus.

The idea of those involved with the graffiti restoration process was that deviating from a graffiti font was ok. The point that letters can be as technical challenging as photorealistic scenery had be proven by the mural’s original artists.

The muralists were restoring the idea that graffiti writers love their city and interact with their community.

So maybe the actual mural wasnt exactly restored to exact original form.

But the remembrance of icons and their contributions to our city is important to our city’s culture and identity development. Graffiti was used to put this back in people’s minds.

A legible font conveyed this sentiment by being more viewer accessible.

(plus the back wall has 18+ burners on it, painted by BSA,PBJ, ESE,IOK, 3WA and TFC doods.)

This set the stage for a rap battle between Zero Star and EC Vol.

DIY MARCHING BAND:Tony “Envelope” Collinger and Mike “DJ Detox” Tormey set up a PA in the back of a pick-up truck so that Detox could dejay while people marched in the parade.

Danielle Kline made a dinosaur float so that the Daymon Dodson doll would have somewhere to sit during the parade.

Parade time.

This is Jacqueliene Arias, a journalist, artist and filmmaker in town from NYC because of the festival on Gay Street downtown. She contacted me via facebook because she is making a documentary and wanted to talk about Columbus art and culture. So I picked her up.

She was really impressed by what she saw at ID09 on Gay Street. She expressed a notion that it was shame the events were the same day. I told her a real city can support two festivals in the same day.( Which Columbus did easily)

I told her that organizers of ID09 did try to include us.

However our parade is greatly contingent on having mural space to paint tribute walls, and the spectacle of marching in front of OSU celebrating football fans on gameday on OSU campus.

Daymon loved absurdity so trumping OSU football is prolly the best thing we could ever do.

Picture being a freshman at OSU:

You are on a porch playing beerpong. So pumped that the Buckeyes just won and you have a case of Natty Light to toast these glorious times..

You look over, and OMG, in the middle of the street are 300 people of every background possible except your own, marching to the instrumental Dipset’s “What’s Really Good” while chanting Racist Joe.

Might make you spit out your shitty beer, and create a memory

(and at least we had a painting of downtown’s skyline)

rofl

The parade concluded on 5th and High where the crowd sung Daymon’s hit song, “Bitch, You Don’t Know Shit”.

I was terrified because Daymon’s family were there and the song is explicit.

To my suprise/relief Daymon’s mom knew the words. She giggled during and did not sing the “bitch” or “shit” parts. It was laughshh you don’t laughshh. It was beautiful that she had discovered and enjoyed that aspect of her son.

Detox finally gets to get out of the truck after dejaying a parade.

Eventually we left Milk Bar and headed to the Summit for this afterparty:
