Camu Tao-King of Hearts has a label and release date.

MP3:Camu Tao-Perfect Plan
Today marks the 2-year anniversary of Camu Tao’s death.  As I sat hear reflecting on the Columbus rapper/producer this press release arrived. I am just cuttin and pasting it because it has a letter from EL-P. as well as a description of Camu’s upcoming album and quotes from Kid Cudi, Mathew Johnson(owner of Fat Possum) among others about Camu.

CAMU TAO “KING OF HEARTS” TO SEE RELEASE ON DEFINITIVE JUX / FAT POSSUM ON AUGUST 17

PLUS Personal letter from Jaime “EL-P” Meline

CAMU TAO : “KING OF HEARTS
(Definitive Jux/Fat Possum; August 17, 2010)

Two years ago today  Tero “Camu Tao” Smith died after a grueling battle with cancer.  He was a friend, a son, a brother, a groom to be and last but not least a brilliant producer, singer, rapper and entertainer.  Words can not express the heartache that has been felt in the wake of his passing by those who loved and respected him.

In many ways KING OF HEARTS is a record of what could have been, a snapshot of an artist mid-evolution.  In some ways it’s a diary discovered in the belongings of a friend who passed away. Or maybe it’s a scrap book of a master inventor with only half of the schematics of some incredible new invention detailed inside. You don’t need to see the invention fully realized in order to recognize the magnitude of the creative force behind the sketches.

For those of you who know, I don’t feel like I have to explain to you how important the release of KING OF HEARTS is.  He was, as I’ve said before, the secret none of us wanted to keep.  He is a legend.

For the many of you out there unfamiliar with Camu and his work:  we’ve written a bio/press release as well as collected some of his music as well as a world premier off of KOH called “Perfect Plan” which I’m putting below.  I only ask that you take a little bit of time out of your day to investigate.  Don’t let yourself be closed off to this mans music simply because you haven’t heard of it/him before.  Getting his amazing, weird, raw and original music heard is all he ever wanted.  We only ask that you give him that chance.  I believe you’ll be happy you finally discovered the world of the King Of Hearts.  I know for the many of us who loved and respected him that knowing Camu and his music changed us forever.

What we hope happens when you hear King Of Hearts is that you feel the way we feel; This music (even in its raw form) is some of the bravest, most surprising, inspired, and (now more so than ever) poignant material around from an artist who was only beginning to tap into his potential. It’s a raw reminder for his fans, friends, and family of how special and off the wall his energy was, and yet it sounds nothing like anything he’s ever done before or has previously been known for.  In fact, I don’t think it’s over the top to say that what Camu was doing sounds like nothing before it because I know for a fact that there was never anyone like Camu before him.

There won’t ever be another after, either.

Rest In Peace, Tero “Camu Tao” Smith

Sincerely,

Jaime “EL-P” Meline

For two years I have written about Camu on this day.  Not a day has gone by that we, his family, friends and fans, haven’t thought about him.  About who he was, what he did and what he never got the chance to do.  About the talent he never got to truly share with the world and the love he did.  For over four years I have hoped to make the following bittersweet announcement:

This summer, on August 17th, Camu Tao’s first and final solo album KING OF HEARTS will be released by Definitive Jux in collaboration with Fat Possum Records.  In conjunction with this release we will also be giving away (for free) the 2005 Central Services (Camu Tao and EL-P) ep “Forever Frozen In Television Time”.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRESS RELEASE:
Camu Tao, the legendary MC, producer, and singer, whose life was tragically cut short on May 25th, 2008 after a protracted battle with lung cancer, will have his debut solo album and final statement, King of Hearts, posthumously released on August 17, 2010 as a collaborative release between Fat Possum Records and Definitive Jux. Described by friends, peers and colleagues as “wild, proud, loving, tough, outspoken, spontaneous, and brilliant,” Tao was a creative powerhouse whose output was as staggering in its scope of influences as it was emotionally evocative.  El-P describes King of Hearts as “raw, exciting and unlike anything anyone has heard”.  Even newer school rappers feel the impact of Camu’s work, “These songs are so before their time it’s ridiculous” says Kid Cudi.   Cage sums up the album as “a masterpiece in the making.”
Camu got his start in the late 90′s alongside RJD2 and Copywrite in Columbus, OH’s seminal hip hop group MHZ whose releases were issued by Bobbito Garcia’s legendary vinyl only label Fondle ‘Em Records. After dropping his cult classic solo debut 12-inch Hold the Floor on Definitive Jux in 2001 he went on to become a central fixture at the label, his distinctive contributions playing a key role in The Weathermen (his crew with Aesop Rock, Cage, El-P, Yak Ballz, Tame One and Breeze Brewin) and as one half of S.A. SMASH(alongside Keith “Metro” Lawson) on their 2003 Def Jux full length album Smashy Trashy. As a producer his brilliant contributions are evidenced on Cage’s seminal album Hell’s Winter, and The Perceptionists’ Black Dialogue, as well as appearances on Aesop Rock’s Danger, Fire & Knives, El-P’s Fantastic Damage and Collecting the Kid, Prefuse 73′s Surrounded By Silence, and many, many others.
At the time of his death Camu Tao was working on what his friends and colleagues anticipated to be his breakthrough solo record, King of Hearts, initially scheduled for release on Definitive Jux in 2008, but left incomplete in the wake of his cancer diagnosis. Pieced together from the demos and home recordings he left behind (which have subsequently earned him fans amongst such esteemed peers as Dangermouse, Kid Cudi, and many others), the new release offers a privileged view of a magnum opus in the making by a blossoming visionary who was denied the opportunity to bring his unique masterpiece to fulfillment. The record marks a departure from his former works, most notably as it finds Camu favoring a distinctively playful, semi-soul croon as well as the off-kilter and wild rapping that earned him a reputation among peers and fans as an innovative genius. Musically King of Hearts delves into realms of gritty, electropunk pop, alternately veering between the dark carnival-esque and the sublimely summery. Pleasantly disorienting electronic tones cascade and pulse as dense, propulsive beats build a solid foundation upon which Tao constructs immensely hooky and infectious choruses. Written and produced by Camu himself, King Of Hearts is the last vision of a criminally underrated talent in the midst of a major artistic breakthrough cut short before being fully completed.
Also prior to his death Camu Tao formed production crew and side project Central Services with longtime friend & collaborator El-P, whose long awaited 2004 debut EP Forever Frozen in Television Time has gone unreleased until now. In conjunction with the release of King of Hearts Definitive Jux will be issuing Central Services’ EP as a free digital download.
Thoughts on King of Hearts:
“These songs are so before their time it’s ridiculous. The melodies and
harmonies are very clever, the lyrics are quick witted and his vocal
arrangements are genius. People need to hear this shit and know this
man’s story. Camu was a great future Ohio talent who I’m sure would
have made a huge mark in this mediocre industry.” – Kid Cudi
“It’s a shame he couldn’t fully finish this record and an even bigger
shame we lost him. You can feel the pain in his voice as you get lost
in his words and music. King of Hearts is a masterpiece in the making.” – Cage
“I can’t tell you how exciting it is to be able to finally put our
dear friend Camu Tao’s King Of Hearts record out and to have
partners like the good people at Fat Possum to do it.  The music is
raw, exciting and unlike anything anyone has heard.  Finally we get to
share the final vision of this very special person with you all.” – El-P
“When I played the Camu tracks, I thought it was one of the best things I’d ever heard from the Def Jux camp.  I’m really anxious and excited to release King of Hearts, and to be working with Def Jux.” – Matthew Johnson (founder Fat Possum)
El-P’s Official Statement on the Fate of Def Jux
Read El’s official statement on Def Jux’s Website
This year, a decade after starting DEF JUX and after overseeing the releases of some incredible albums including the forthcoming release of my dear late and great friend Camu Tao’s brilliant “KING OF HEARTS” LP, I’m stepping away from my duties as artistic director for the label to concentrate on what I love most: being a producer and an artist full time. This is something I’ve been contemplating for a few years now, and can’t think of a better time or, with the eventual release of Camu’s record, a more poetic way to transition into a new direction.
This means change for JUX. Of course we’ll still have our website, we will still sell our catalog, merch and more as well as bring you news and updates on all our projects and artists. We will be releasing “KING OF HEARTS”, a DEF JUX remix compilation, a 10 year anniversary retrospective and some other goodies. But then as a traditional record label DEF JUX will effectively be put on hiatus. We are not closing, but we are changing. The process is already underway, and the last several months (for those wondering what the hell we’ve been up to) have been spent dealing with the technical aspects of wrapping up the label in it’s current form and re-imagining our collective and individual futures.
If you watched the Vast Aire vs Def Jux beef that brewed from May to Mid August this year then you prolly knew change was in the air.
Mavlus Funk+Soul Party at The Cove Tonight
Scotty Cockblock(Sweatin,Invented Columbus Hardcore) and DC Kareem(Get Right/MilkBar) are throwing a new Funk Party tonight with Columbus Hip Hop Pioneer DJ True Skills in the limelight. True Skills(Adrian Willis) has some of most curious, peregrine psychedelic funk records I have heard. Its like a weed brigadeiros for your body’s internal rhythmic response mechanisms.
After the Jump. 1 Important Fact about DJ True Skills.
“You have no props or Madskills”-MHz-World Premier 1998
DJ True Skills, known as DJ MAd Skills at the time, gave Bobbitio Garcia a MHZ(RJD2,Camu Tao, Copywrite,Jakki, Tage) demo in 1997.
For those that don’t know, Bobby used to host the Stretch Armstrong Show on WKCR that defined NYC underground Hip Hop in the 90′s. Bobbito had a label called Fondle’ Em. Fondle Em was at the time launching the career of Cage, and bringing Zevlove X of KMD back under the name MF Doom.
Bobbito thought it was dope, and started putting MHZ records out. This entrance to the NYC Indie Hop Hop inner-circle led to Copywrite & Camu getting down with Eastern Conference, and RJ being able to handle his “Dead Ringer” demo to Def Jux head El-P.
Who knows what time would’ve brought. Slug would’ve still been in at Scribble in Cincy for Print to meet. Rawls still knew Kweli. The MHz were really talented.
But. True Skills giving that demo was crucial.
El-P and Jared Leto aren’t feeling Spankrock.
I saw this over @ www.low-bee.com and thought it was kinda funny:
Funcrusher El-P thinks Spankrock is bullshit—>here. And I guess Jared Leto and Spankrock aren’t feeling each other according Stereogum.–>here. In a more localized response, as I am typing this with the Spankrock website window open, an annoyed ex-graffiti writer turned Chef , Nerd 1 is asking me what is this crap that I am listening to right now. And keeps telling me it sounds like Fergie
EL-P in Columbus Recap
Picture%20003.jpg
Photo by Johnny Cashola
Later this week, I intend on giving a brief history of the late 90′s Hip Hop indie rap boom, EL-P’s place in it, and how all of those things relate to Columbus Hip Hop (ie RJD2, Blueprint, Camu Tao etc) in a really simplified manner.
With that said, EL-P aka Jamie Meline appearing in Columbus last Saturday was way over due. Early that afternoon, EL did an instore at Mags. It rained heavily so the turn-out wasn’t amazing. As the Hip Hop buyer at Magnolia, it is always embarrassing when an instore doesn’t work out. You always feel like you are gonna bruise the artists ego. He took it in stride. I had interviewed EL for the Alive, so his opinion that artists need to connect with fans and all people in between out of shear fact that people like music was in practice.
Watching a notoriously cynical New Yorker sincerely be nice to people once again proved to me the EL-P really gets it. The juxtiposition of nihilism that anyone living in this world should possess and a respect of the fact that anyone gives a fuck about his music was something that other malcontents could learn from.
Like… Photo-op’s are retarded, wanting someone’s autograph is silly, the whole fishbowl process of an instore is awkward. But he would take the photos and sign the cd’s. He would talk to anyone that had anything to say. This might sound basic, but a lot of artists don’t get this.
I have had notable indie rappers in the store that treated their fans like idiot followers which caused people to stop buying the artists records.
You don’t have to pander. No need to be a prick.
Just as you aren’t a moron, your fans aren’t either.
Well maybe I am a moron sometimes. But usually I don’t smile for the camera either.
The show had three openers: Slow Suicide Stimulus, Yak Balls, and Hangar 18. I missed SSS, caught part of Yak Bidalls, and all of Hangar.
Hangar 18 has been coming to Columbus and Scribble Jam since like 1999, so they get a lot of love from the local scene. Doods are really silly, and just enjoy making music. This translated on stage. Lots of energy. They ended there performance by rapping over “Welcome to the Jungle”.
Next Up was EL-P
elp06.jpg
Photo By Johnny Cashola
El had two projection screens, blue lighting that created silhouettes, and a smoke machine that set-up a familiar, lonely futuristic environment. EL-P’s touring dejay, Mr. Dibbs came out first and let “Mad World” from the Donnie Darko soundtrack play. Normally, I would think this is lightweight corny, but it fit the mood.
A feeling of some distant force destroying you, while already existing in an alienated state.
It works.
El and hits hypeman rushed the staged and performed, “TPC” which the the hook is “This is the Sound of What You Don’t Know Killing You.”. It’s chanted over a reconstruction of music Mr. Meline had Mars Volta play for him. The song is about how people have accepted all the terrible things in the world without even questioning or resisting it anymore. It’s the first song off of the new album “I Will Sleep When You Are Dead”.
This album, like much of EL-P’s work, combines a fatalistic relationship with death, a biting and sardonic social commentary about day to day life, a strong hatred for the war in Iraq, plenty admissions of personal corruptions mixed with the idea that he is on some Hip Hop shit and he is a grown ass man that will handle his..
EL was dressed as a totured prisoner at Guantanamo Bay as seen in his video for “Smithereens”.
Picture%20004.jpg
The bulk of the show was songs off the new album. El did perform Deep Space 9mm from his first solo album 2002′s Fantastic Damage and he rocked over the beat from Company Flow’s Vital Nerve and did the hook from the song,
The crowd didn’t seem to mind. They were going apeshit and singing every word. El noted that it took ten years for him to get to Columbus, and he was happy he finally did. The night before in Cleveland only 100 people had came out so he wasn’t taken the packed, eager room for granted.
He gave some interesting banter about cocaine usage before “League of Extraordinary Nobodies”. He mocked how coked out people talk to each other.
At the end of the night, El ended up doing like 4 encores, and eventually had to stop even though the crowd kept chanting his name.
It was nice to see that an icon go full throttle in fan relationship, performance, and concept. EL-P’s commitment to art, resistance, humor, hostility, and self-preservation resonated completely.
El-P Says New Cannibal Ox Album Unlikely
El-P dismissed hope for the anticipated Cannibal Ox Reunion in an interview with producer blog Can I Bring My Gat.
Is there a new Can Ox album coming out any time soon?
I really doubt it.
Really?
The fact of the matter is that everyone has been crossing their fingers, including Def Jux, hoping that Cannibal Ox would get their shit together as a group, even to the point where I resigned them. I really hoped and prayed that they would get their shit together, thought they were at a certain juncture in time. At this point I can’t pretend anymore or cover for those guys. They haven’t been together for a long time, but they tried to get it back together again, but it’s proving to be an impossible task.
That breaks my heart.
You’re not the only one buddy.
