DJ Premier-Malcolm McLaren Tribute Mix

DJ Premier, y’know the guy who defined what fundamental NYC Hip Hop production sounds like by producing Ganstarr, MOP, Group Home, Biggie, Nas and a zillion other peoples classic record pays tribute to punk/fashion antangonist Malcolm McLaren who passed last Thursday at the age of 64.

Premier’s tribute splices soundclips of McLaren stumbling up Hip Hop in the early 80’s because “a big black guy”” was wearing a Sex Pistols t-shir so McLaren struck up a convo with him. That man turned out to be Afrika Bambatta. The mix follows  through the 80’s and his interactions with Hip Hop which is highlighted by McLaren’s relationship withthe World Famous Supreme Team. The Supreme Team had a radio show in New York starting in 1979 and put out records with McLaren. The most famous being “Buffalo Gals”.  The Supreme Team were the first 5 Percenters in Hip Hop to get a record out. Personnally I teter between hoping 5 Percenters liked McLaren cause the liked his ability to Build and Destory or perhaps they looked at him as embracing his devilish nature. Odds are it boils down to opportunity. (Which is an ability to build and destroy)

The mix then leads into ,Bow Wow Wow, a New Wave group that McLaren managed but refused to let talk to the press because be thought they were too stupid to articulate themeselves. There is a museum somewhere that displays some contracts McLaren had rock bands

I personally fuck with with Malcolm cause he was all the way turnt up on some situationlist type jump-oof and also down with 5 Percenters.  So the fact that DJ Premier honors this man is dope to me.

It is timely giventhe current popularity of Passion Pit, MGMT, and groups like that with hip hop fans.

I stole this mix from DJPremierblog.com

The Gothamist is reporting that Guru had a heart attack and is in a como. The 43 year-old rapper fronted Gangstar, who is easily one of the most important rap groups of all time.

The above video is for “Whose Gonna Take The Weight” which was on the 1991 classic Step in the Arena. This was in the midst of first Gulf War and the events leading up to the L.A. Riots. Hense the militant imagery.
