The Treebar (formally Treehouse) reopened it’s doors for a preview party this Friday. I was able to catch the Kyle Snowashes and Ghost Shirt.

Treehouse and namesake tree gone for good, but ‘The Tree Bar’ opening in former space

As reported previously, the beloved Columbus venue with a tree growing through the roof is gone. RIP Andyman’s Treehouse and The Treehouse. But Ghost Shirt bassist Ryan Haye is giving the space a fresh start with a new but familiar name – The Tree Bar.

Things of note:
- The tree is gone (but not forgotten). The stump will have a plaque dedicated to Andyman.
- Draft beer!
- New bar top, new carpet, new paint, etc.
- Lots of familiar faces are returning: Joe Peppercorn (& his open mic), Quinn Fallon behind the bar, Kyle Sowash booking the bands, etc.

It all kicks off on Dec. 23 with sets from The Kyle Sowashes, SPD GVNR, Low Men, Ghost Shirt and Two Cow Garage. The doors at 887 Chambers Rd. open at 8pm, music at 9. Full story and details coming in Thursday’s Other Paper. EDIT: Here’s the link to the story.

Recently free music: Obviouslies, Branden Barnett

More and more bands are making their music free or “name your own price” on Bandcamp. This past week, Nick Schuld’s band Obviouslies made its album, Pinky, and two digital 7-inches available for whatever you want:

And Branden Barnett of Ghost Shirt posted a new freebie single from his upcoming solo record, along with a Neutral Milk Hotel cover:

I’m sure there are other Columbus albums & singles recently posted and/or made free on Bandcamp. Feel free to post ‘em in the comments.

MP3: Branden Barnett – “Heart Won’t Bend”

Branden Barnett of Ghost Shirt has a new solo album, “Verse Chorus Verse,” coming out, and this is the first (free) single. Downloading it is a good idea.

Tonight: The Wet Darlings CD release party @ Skully’s

The Wet Darlings are doing things the right way – playing shows both in and out of town, generating press, recording new music, getting radio play on CD101 (are we still allowed to call it that?) – and generally just having a blast in the process. Tonight they’ll be releasing So Long, Lover, a 6-song EP recorded at Earthwork Recording Studio (Newark, OH).

Things start going down around 9pm at Skully’s with Ghost Shirt and Yellow Light Maybe rounding out the bill. Make Believe Monsters will be on hand to make custom Wet Darlings screen-printed t-shirts.

Donew8ing: Ghost Shirt

Ghost Shirt

Touring bands looking to extend tours or fill in gaps between recording albums often will employ the “we’re playing our most popular/critically-acclaimed album front to back” tour concept as it gives fans what they want and beg for. This isn’t something you see too often in a local scene because, let’s face it, there aren’t a whole lot of bands out there making more than one or two records so their catalog of songs is rather shallow.

Ghost Shirt has proven to be one of the more prolific Columbus bands in recent history, writing and recording as if the world might end tomorrow (It’s not, silly. The end of the world isn’t coming until next year so Ghost Shirt still has time to crank out another 50 or 60 songs). So it’s not unusual to hear a hodgepodge of songs, ranging from material from the first album (Domestique) to selections from their 52 singles in 52 weeks project to freshly written, yet-to-be-recorded tracks at any given live show (and, if you haven’t noticed, there are plenty of Ghost Shirt appearances around town).

The Postcard from Hell community, which started out as a meeting place for Uncle Tupelo fans but expanded to all things alt-country/folk-influenced/rural-pop, fell in love with Ghost Shirt’s late 2010 offering, Daniel, and named it one of their top albums of 2010. We’re very lucky – and fortunate – to have the band pulling out the “front-to-back” card for their performance Friday night at the Donew8ing show. This might be the first time Ghost Shirt has played the album in it’s entirety and knowing what fervent songwriters they are, it might be the last time they limit themselves to just this particular batch of songs.
