Friday: Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys @ Kobo

Let me see if I get this right – a cover band covers many different songs by many different artists and a tribute band pays tribute by covering just one band’s songs? If that’s the case, Columbus needs less cover bands and more … WAY MORE … tribute bands. (Come on tribute bands, let’s start a rally, the Cleveland tribute band scene blows away the Columbus tribute band scene!)

Though they play shows few and far between, Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys, Columbus’s (only?) Queen tribute band, will grace the stage for the first time in a year Friday night at Kobo.

Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys will be performing with the Mrs. Children tribute band Ghost Shirt (just kidding … I think) and Chicago’s Milano (definitely NOT a Chicago tribute band, though I think I’d pay to see a band cover “25 or 6 to 4”). Doors at 8, Ghost Shirt kicking the music off at 9:30. More info here.

Photos: The Treebar preview party

The Treebar (formally Treehouse) reopened it’s doors for a preview party this Friday. I was able to catch the Kyle Snowashes and Ghost Shirt.

Treehouse and namesake tree gone for good, but ‘The Tree Bar’ opening in former space

As reported previously, the beloved Columbus venue with a tree growing through the roof is gone. RIP Andyman’s Treehouse and The Treehouse. But Ghost Shirt bassist Ryan Haye is giving the space a fresh start with a new but familiar name – The Tree Bar.

Things of note:
– The tree is gone (but not forgotten). The stump will have a plaque dedicated to Andyman.
– Draft beer!
– New bar top, new carpet, new paint, etc.
– Lots of familiar faces are returning: Joe Peppercorn (& his open mic), Quinn Fallon behind the bar, Kyle Sowash booking the bands, etc.

It all kicks off on Dec. 23 with sets from The Kyle Sowashes, SPD GVNR, Low Men, Ghost Shirt and Two Cow Garage. The doors at 887 Chambers Rd. open at 8pm, music at 9. Full story and details coming in Thursday’s Other Paper. EDIT: Here’s the link to the story.

Tonight In Columbus: DJ Lance, Envelope, Ghost Shirt , the Lost Revival Play CD101/Homage Showcase

Above is a limited edition,  classic “CD101” shirt that local clothing brand Homage is bundling with a flashdrive of local music.

Only 200 of the music/shirt bundle will be ever produced.

The proceeds from this t-shirt/music bundle with benefit the CD101 for the Kids Charity.

Tonight Envelope, Ghost Shirt, and the Lost Revival will play a free CD101 @ 102.5 Local Showcase at Park Street Patio in conjunction with the release of this Homage shirt. DJ Lance of CD101@102.5’s electronic show the Remix will spin at this free show as well.

Park Street is located at 533 Park St, Columbus, OH 43215.

This is a great show, and a really good cause

We all pray that the nostalgia factor of the limited edition CD101 shirt lays soley in the good memories of driving in your car or sitting in your parent’s basement and hearing Nirvana for the first time on the radio.

Recently free music: Obviouslies, Branden Barnett

More and more bands are making their music free or “name your own price” on Bandcamp. This past week, Nick Schuld’s band Obviouslies made its album, Pinky, and two digital 7-inches available for whatever you want:

And Branden Barnett of Ghost Shirt posted a new freebie single from his upcoming solo record, along with a Neutral Milk Hotel cover:

I’m sure there are other Columbus albums & singles recently posted and/or made free on Bandcamp. Feel free to post ’em in the comments.

MP3: Branden Barnett – “Heart Won’t Bend”

Branden Barnett of Ghost Shirt has a new solo album, “Verse Chorus Verse,” coming out, and this is the first (free) single. Downloading it is a good idea.

Tonight: The Wet Darlings CD release party @ Skully’s

The Wet Darlings are doing things the right way – playing shows both in and out of town, generating press, recording new music, getting radio play on CD101 (are we still allowed to call it that?) – and generally just having a blast in the process. Tonight they’ll be releasing So Long, Lover, a 6-song EP recorded at Earthwork Recording Studio (Newark, OH).
