This track from J. Mascis’s first solo album (out now on Sub Pop) has been floating around for a month or so, but somehow I missed it. (This Internet thing is hard to keep up with.) I’m loving this record. Fans of Dinosaur Jr. will obviously find a lot to like. It’s mostly acoustic, but there’s still some trademark Mascis electric-guitar solos and layered fuzz sprinkled throughout.
The early Neil Young vibe is hard to miss, too. Actually, if Young wasn’t so cliche when angry, and Daniel Lanois wasn’t so intent on being Daniel Lanois, this is what Le Noise could have sounded like.
