Hip Hop Conference Flyer front-1

The Third Annual  OSU Hip Hop Literacies Conferenceis upon us. The 2013 theme is Pedagogies for Social Change.  Keynote speakers for the Feb 15 portion at the OSU Union include NYU Professor Martha Diaz, and Dr. Christopher Edmin. (Dr. Edmin was recently in the New York Times with the GZA because the two are developing ways to utilize Hip Hop’s oratory methods in science education.)

P.Blackk & Fabrashay A ride around Columbus and rap at various spots.. Personally,  I love the scene where they rap in front of the graffiti in the bathroom of Carabar. Renee Dion adds vocals for this J.Rawls produced track.

This is off  the P.Blackk & J. Rawls album “Contemporary Nostalgia” which drops tonight (Dec 30th) on P.Blackk’s bandcamp.

P. Blackk’s new video for “Coming of Age” off his upcoming album with J.Rawls “Contemporary Nostalgia” is everything that is right about the world.

One has to love the completeness of the whole thing.

The Taylor Nawrocki directed clip starts off with Rawls’ kids in his home. The kids open a door to a studio session with the old schooler, J.Rawls and the most freshest,  beloved young rapper P.Blackk getting busy. Then P.Blackk pearls around town with his DJ, Bruni.  This all while local Hip Hop legend DJ O-Sharp supplies the cuts. While I am sucker for true culture; the main reason why this example of culture works is because the song is good.

P. Blackk’s & J. Rawls “Contemporary Nostalgia” drops December 30th.

It’s Sunday. I will just let Pedro tell it:

For those that aren’t familiar with who I am my name is P. Blackk.  I’m 21 years old & from Columbus, Ohio.  I’ve been working on this project called “Contemporary Nostalgia” for quite some time now with my big homie J. Rawls.  You might’ve heard me on the J. Rawls “Ohio Takeover Mixtape”, on L.e For The Uncool’s “The Measure” (George Washington) on Fly.Union’s “Look Up To The Sky”,on their TGTC album.  I can now also add to that list my feature on BJ The Chicago Kid’s single “Heartless” which was his cover to “Long Run” by Fly.Union.  But in this email I’ve linked my 1st visual as promotion for my collaborative project with J. Rawls, “Nahmean?”  I’m trying to get the word out there, so of course I’m emaling you in hopes of getting that support to get the word out there.  Once again, thank you for your time & get back to me as soon as possible

This September 1st showcase comes on the weekend J-Rawls and Casual will release their album Respect Game or Expect Flames. Peep a radio rip of the “Respect Game or Expect Flames” title track which has a very special guest on it:

While bumping this banger, I decided to sift through some footage Path and I shot when I interviewed Rawls for the Other Paper back in May of 2011. In the below footage shot in Rawls home, J explains how he got his start in both making music, and in putting records out. It’s pretty interesting as his Hip Hop story starts in 1987 with him and friends stealing his fathers records. J. Rawls ,then, tells us how he ended up linking up with Greyhound Bus traveling Talib Kweli in 95.96 and eventually started putting his records out during the late 90’s Hip Hop boom with his group the Lone Catalysts.
