Anyway Records celebrates 20 years with a two-night blowout at Ace of Cups (Dec. 21 & 22)

Just in time for Christmas, Bela Koe-Krompecher issued the following note regarding Anyway Records 20th anniversary celebration:

In celebration of 20 years of debt-making Anyway will host a two nights of shows at Ace Of Cups, December 21-22. Bands playing include: The New Bomb Turks, Moviola, Kyle Sowashes, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Connections, Obnox, Necropolis (covering Gaunt), Greenhorn, Belreve, Jenny Mae, St. Lennox, Orchestraville, Winter Makes Sailors, County Pharaohs and more. Proceeds from the show will go to three charities (Peloton, Columbus Music Co-Op and NAMI Ohio). On Saturday, there will be a free kids show starting at 6 PM. Admission will be $7.

We’ll have much more information as the shows get closer, but clear your calendars now, this is one (two) not to be missed.

Photos: Megacity Music Marathon

This past Saturday Woodland’s Tavern in Grandview and PBR hosted the Megacity Music Marathon. This event was held with over 30 bands on 3 stages which I’m sure one of my donewaiting comrades will elaborate on.

These photos include Flotation Walls, Swimsuit Edition, TK Webb, Kyle Sowashes, Andrew Graham, Nick Tolford, You’re so Bossy, Bird & Flower, Chris McCoy, The Bygones, Tin Armor, The Lindsay, Saintseneca, Tree of Snakes and Bigfoot.

Joel Oliphint’s Favorite Albums of 2010

If 2009 was the year of Larry Jon Wilson, 2010 was the year of Bill Fox and the Gibson Bros. I think I listened to Bill Fox’s two reissued albums — Shelter from the Smoke and Transit Byzantium — more than anything else. (Shelter got a deluxe vinyl reissue, and Scat promises a similar treatment for Transit in 2011.) Go get ’em. And working on a story about the Gibson Bros. reunion show back in July occupied my brainspace and held my interest for months. I don’t know if CDR has any copies of the Build a Raft reissue left, but if they do, it’s required listening for any Columbus music fan or anyone with a passing interest in twisted, noisy country/blues/rock.

But in terms of new stuff, here’s what I liked this year, starting with national releases and ending with Cowtown LPs.

1. Strand of Oaks – Pope Killdragon
I didn’t immediately hit repeat when I heard this album, but once I came back to it, I never stopped. Who knew a record with songs about John Belushi (from the perspective of Dan Akroyd), a 12-foot man and JFK could be so engrossing. Devastating, too. If you think Tim Showalter is just another pretty-voiced folkie, the layers of synth and Sabbath-like riffs on “Giant’s Despair” prove otherwise. The best way to get Killdragon digitally or on vinyl is through Strand of Oaks’ Kickstarter page.

2. The Black Keys – Brothers
Ditto Duffy.

Friday at Carabar: Smug Brothers (Dayton), Sowashes, Ghost Shirt, Bicentennial Bear

MP3: Smug Brothers – Low Like Nothing
MP3: Smug Brothers – Build Your Collections

All three locals on this bill would be worth venturing out to see separately, so seeing the Kyle Sowashes, Ghost Shirt and Bicentennial Bear play a free show together at Carabar is a no-brainer (esp. if part 1 of Lost Weekend’s two-night anniversary extravaganza isn’t your thing).

Icing on the cake is Dayton’s Smug Brothers, fronted by Kyle Melton and featuring Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists) on drums. GBV fans will find plenty to like on the band’s new EP, Stock Romeo — 7 songs/15 minutes chock full of home-fi hooks. Sample for yourself above.
