In January of 2010, the C.H.E.K Institute teamed up with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Overstock.com and many other key sponsors to help assist the first female paraplegic athlete to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. On Sunday, January 31st, 2010, at approximately 5:30 PM, Erica Davis, a paraplegic since 2005, along with Tara Butcher, an amputee below the left-knee, reached the summit.

This successful project is designed to bring awareness to the capabilities of Challenged Athletes everywhere in that anyone can accomplish anything and everything they put their minds to. The preparation and climb were filmed by Captured Life Productions to be compiled into a documentary entitled Through the Roof, to be released in late Spring 2010.

It’s late spring now, and Donewaiting faves and fantastic motherfuckers Brainbow have music featured in the film and said film is premiering at the Gateway on Saturday. If you’re not going to Nelsonville, go to this, then go to Skully’s for the after-party where Brainbow, Main Street Gospel and EYE will rock your face off.

Shit’s gonna be through the roof maaaaan.

The Main Street Gospel Sign With Tee Pee Records, Set To Release Debut Album “Love Will Have Her Revenge” June 29th!

The Main Street Gospel have signed with Tee Pee Records and will release their debut album “Love Will Have Her Revenge” on June 29th.

The Main Street Gospel is a Columbus, Ohio trio who mix psych-infused classic rock with dusty country vibes and dirt-stained blues. The band was born in 2005, when Barry Dean–former tambourine shaker for the Brian Jonestown Massacre–began writing songs with longtime friend Ryan “Tito” Ida. Adam Scoppa joined the band on drums the following year.

Dean grew up around music, as his grandfather was a touring and recording guitarist for acts like Roy Rogers & The Sons of the Pioneers and The Georgia Crackers. It’s safe to say that passion for country music was passed on to his grandson. Tito grew up listening to Hank Williams and Bob Dylan and also paved his musical path early on. Scoppa takes his back beat cues from vintage Chicago blues and ’60s garage.

Together, the band has a strong sense of understanding and respect for the true roots of rock n’roll. Their sound recalls elements of folk giants The Byrds and Neil Young, while at the same time retaining the modern aesthetics of revivalists like Spacemen 3 and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

To date, The Main Street Gospel have played several shows with like-minded bands such as Dead Meadow, Hopewell and fellow Ohioans Buffalo Killers.

In early 2008, the trio mobilized themselves to Akron Analog Studio in Akron, Ohio to record what would become the band’s first 7″ single. ‘All Your Love Is Gone’ b/w ‘Who Shot You Down’ was recorded and engineered by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, whose influence certainly resonates. While the songs are decidedly stripped-down in essence, they still manage to accomplish a big, layered sonic delivery.

The Main Street Gospel’s debut album will be 11 tracks of cool, driving rock n’ roll titled Love Will Have Her Revenge, sure to please bluesy alternative country, classic rock, and psych fans.

Mount Carmel has been getting some local love on the message board recently, and the band’s profile is sure to grow before our very eyes with news of the trio’s next record coming out on Siltbreeze — an especially familiar name in Columbus b/c of Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit and ex-pat Pink Reason, all of whom have releases on the boutique Philly label. (Good work, Columbus.)

Ah, but don’t start the gripefest just yet, shitgaze haters. If you’re not familiar with Mount Carmel, this trio — Kevin Skubak and brothers Pat and Matthew Reed — gets compared to Cream whenever I hear their name come up. So you’re more likely to catch them playing with fellow blues-rock lovers The Main Street Gospel than with local Siltbreeze labelmates.

Still, it’s blues-rock under the influence of Siltbreeze’s longtime Ohio affiliate Mike Rep. And maybe it’s not such a big leap for Siltbreeze after all, given TNV’s infatuation with the ’60s. Now Mount Carmel brings us the ’70s. (I know, Cream broke up in ’69. But you get what I mean.)

Anyway, as Pat Reed tells Donewaiting, “We went to Musicol with Mike [Rep] and Adam Smith for a day this summer. They set a bunch of mics and stuff up and we played. We had a real fun time.” Rep and Smith also mixed the album, which Reed says should be around 40 minutes and is due to come out in late February or March on Siltbreeze.
