Old Hundred: Opening for Mumford, new album in Sept

Columbus’s Old Hundred was recently added to the Aug. 14 show at the LC with Mumford & Sons and Dawes, and the band also just announced a new album, Time in the Wild, due Sept. 1 on double vinyl, CD and digital. Check the video for a preview of the sound you can expect from Blake Skidmore and his band on this sophomore LP. If you dig it, and you want to help the band (or just order vinyl in advance), head to the band’s Kickstarter. From the release:

Work began on this album two years ago. In that time, we brought together a collection of songs with different singers, songwriters, themes, and musical tones and shaped them into an album that feels personal yet far-reaching in scope. There are moments on the record that leave you feeling blistered, while others feel spacious and serene; bright tones and dark tones are found side-by-side. But despite the contrasts, the songs on this project grew from the same roots and, when listened to as a whole, feel interconnected.

We recorded over long-weekends at 3 Elliot Studios in Athens, Ohio. The recording was engineered and produced by the amazing Josh Antonuccio, who has worked with Vetiver, Southeast Engine, and more. Josh became our good friend during the process, and his influence helped make the experience – and the record – great. The album will be released on double-vinyl, CD, and digitally on September 1, 2012 with the help of Wide-Eyed Records.

Adriana Mundy’s Favorite Albums of 2010

It is indeed that time of year. Well, yes, it is late December aka Christmas/New Years time. However, when most people are trimming trees, dusting off their John Denver and the Muppets Christmas albums and throwing back some egg nog, music addicts/geeks alike are perusing every “Best of 2010” list they can find on the world wide web. That being said…

Two-thousand and ten was quite a whirlwind year for me. I became part of this brilliant music blog, had a crash course in promoting shows and met some pretty special people along the way. It’s safe to say the music released this year all served as an applicable soundtrack as it felt like new albums came out faster than I could digest them.

If you’ve read most of my posts, it’s apparent that I enjoy reporting on international acts that I feel deserve American attention (and also since the rest of the Donewaiting staff do such a stellar job of keeping up on everything).

On top of national and international releases, Columbus’s scene has also kept quite busy this year. Without further ado, here’s my 2010 list:

1. Efterklang, Magic Chairs
Watch: Modern Drift

Reasons why Denmark rules: 1. Efterklang 2.Christiania 3. Legoland

2. Finders Keepers CompilationPomegranates
MP3:Zia: “Helelyos”

Who can resist some 60’s Persian Pop/Funk/Psych?

3. Cate Le Bon, Me Oh My
Watch: Shoeing the Bones

Honestly didn’t know much about Cate before interviewing her earlier this year, now I can’t stop listening to her. (Oh, and this video is really wonderfully weird.) Continue reading

Posters: This weekend in Columbus (+ mp3)

Fewer posters this week, so here’s an mp3 to make up for it. Don’t know why I slept on Way Yes previously. Good stuff.

Tuesday in Columbus: Buke & Gass

YouTube Preview Image

Buke and Gass make music much bigger than they appear. Homemade instruments are only the beginning of the story. Their “dizzying two-guitar polyrhythms” are joined by insistent percussion and vocals that have earned them comparisons to the Dirty Projectors. Now might be the time to catch them at a small venue. Their 2010 release, Reposte, was listed among NPR’s top 50 of the year. The above video gives a little taste of the power and energy from the album.

Tuesday’s show at Kobo (with the Jellyhearts, Talk Normal and Old Hundred) will be their first in Columbus, but they made a splash at CMJ in New York this fall. The New York Times wrote about them twice! Previous gigs include opening for Efferklang and the National.

Full Parking Lot Blowout lineup announced

We told you before about the Gibson Bros, Scrawl and New Bomb Turks. Here’s the full deal, including after-party w/ Ted Leo:

The CMC has a fancy new website, too.

(And some dude wrote about the Gibson Bros reunion in this week’s Other Paper.)
