You know how there are local bands that sound local and then there are local bands that make you say, “No way can these guys be from here!” Pomegranates are one of those bands. Actually, they AREN’T from here (Columbus), they are based in Cincinnati, but they have that Austin/Silverlake/Brooklyn chic.
The band’s fourth album – the first for the Austin-based Modern Outsider (also home to Ume, Bad Veins, etc) – is called Heaven and if you think rock journalists haven’t described it as such, well, you’d be mistaken. Dual vocalists allow the band to avoid conventional trappings; there’s a variety of sounds and influences spread throughout, much of it straddling the line between underground rock and loft party dance pop.
Pomegranates perform on the AliveOne stage at 3:00pm on Sunday, July 15
Pomegranates are a 4-piece from Cincinnati that play "a unique blend of stirring and surprising psychedelic dream rock that’s as tender as it is ass-kicking
What does "bunbury" mean? (No cheating; give it your best guess)
It is from an Oliver Wilde play, I think it means something akin to "an adventure".
What are 3 things that you know about Cincinnati?
It was a major pork processing city which is why it is called Porkopolis and we have the Flying Pig Marathon and also one of the big reasons P&G is here. Winston Churchill described Cincinnati as the most beautiful of all the inland American cities. The "Hall of Justice" on Superfriends was modeled after Union Terminal.
Live at Electraplay alums Maps & Atlases headline the Cabin Fever Festival Saturday at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio, playing alongside Ohio bands Pomegranates, Alwood Sisters, Bird and Flower, Wheels on Fire and Whale Zombie. Not too shabby for a $15 show in an old theater.
This will also be the first opportunity to get early-bird tickets to the Nelsonville Music Festival, May 13-15. $45 for the whole weekend. I will most certainly be there.
To enter to win a pair of tickets to the Cabin Fever Festival, email email@example.com with the subject line CABIN FEVER by 5 p.m. Friday. We’ll choose a random winner then.
