Rest In Peace Eyedea

Minnaepolis emcee Michael “Eyedea” Larson passed away today according to City Pages magazine in Minneapolis.

There is a facebook page set-up to help with funeral costs.

after the jump i ramble about my memory of bumping into Eyedea. And posted some videos that stick out in my mind.
I’m not an expert on Eyedea’s life or music by any means.

Seriously like two months ago, Cashola and I were out with Detox at the Eyedea & Abilities Skully’s show. Detox was flyering for the Camu Tao “King of Hearts” release party. Some asshole said some uninformed, negative shit about Camu to Detox. Detox was furious and waited outside for the guy. The guy came out and Detox confronted him, asking the guy what city he was from, and why he had the audacity to just mock someones death like it is a fun game.
And of course the guy was a smart-ass after being confronted.
Blueprint, Cashola and I tried to talk Detox out of hitting the guy. We have all learned that dead friends are the ultimate sore that people will constantly try to pick at and hurt you with. Not sure why this is, but we all all gone through it repeatedly. And you can’t win because it only hurts you. You can’t give people that power.

Detox’s arguement was, “fuck this fucking guy. fuck him.”
Eyedea stepped in, not knowing the situation and told Detox to calm down.
Detox said to Eyedea, “you don’t know what this about. ”
The Eyedea replied, “Dude you are right. I have no idea. You look like you are going through something. I’m sorry for interuppting”.
Then Eyedea looked at us with a really sympathetic smile and went back to leaning against a car on High Street in front of the venue and observing the confrontation.
Eventually, cooler heads prevailed and we left. It helped that Eyedea at least acknowlegded that Detox might be have a root reason to being upset.
Every interaction I ever had with Eyedea was like that.
He was weird as fuck, warm and genuine..
He’d try to help you hook up with a girl or talk about aliens. Sometimes at the same times.
I didn’t really know him like that, I’d just talk to him when would be in Columbus with Blueprint and Illogic

They came up in the same Rhymesayers/Scribble Jam Circuit.

The two Columbus rappers did an unreleased album with Eyedea, Aesoprock and Slug called the Orphanage

Illogic twittered earlier thanking Eyedea for taking him, Przm and Bru Lei on their first tour.
Eyedea & Abilities played a Weightless New Years Party a few years ago.

Let’s get to the beginning…

Eyedea was both a battle champion and a poet. He made his name through the Blaze Battle and Scribble and also performing as part of Atmosphere back in like 1999.

Then Eyedea kind of backed away from all that to make progressively weirder Hip Hop music on Rhymesayers and Epitaph.

No Scribble Jam in 2009

Earlier this week, midwest hip hop saint, Kevin Beacham sent out this email announcing the end of Scribble Jam. Scribble was a Hip Hop festival in Cincy.

Later this week I might post highlights that include me painting at Scribble, Eminem, MF Doom, Sage Francis, Meta4ce, Brand Nubian, RJD2,Def Jux,Atmosphere, Anticon, Blueprint and disparging comments about the females that the so-called “Queen City” has to offer.

BUt until then…here is what Mr. Beacham had to say.

Scribble Jam 1996-2008

First off, let me just say thank you to everyone who has been reaching out about Scribble ’09. Sorry for putting you on hold, but we had a lot of things to consider. This letter explains it all. Sorry it’s a bit long but I wanted to really try to capture the full situation. If you just want the details without the theatrics, skip to the last two paragraphs J

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for 13 years! I still have vivid memories of pulling into the parking lot of Annie’s in the Summer of ’96 on a blind mission and it just so happened that event (Scribble Magazine Premiere release party) was what become the first official Scribble Jam later that summer. Before I got out of the car I recognized that I was surrounded by Graf artists painting everywhere, DJs rocking on 4 turntables (1200 Hobos), MCs freestyling on the mic and breakers getting down on a sheet of linoleum. I instantly said to myself, “Whatever this is, I want to be a part of it”.

I think that is what most Hip Hop fans felt as the word about Scribble Jam traveled and the event grew from an Ohio thing to a Midwest thing to an International Phenomenon.

There is an extensive list of artists who got their start at Scribble Jam or had their careers take off or enhanced because of it. Scribble Jam is viewed around the world as having some of the most competitive, entertaining, and famous battles of all time. The MC battles at Scribble long ago become the quality standard for what an MC battle should be.

The people involved in making this event (myself included) have always gone about this event as fans that are passionate about Hip Hop Culture. The goal has been to throw an event that could bring the diverse Culture together to experience Hip Hop of all styles, eras, backgrounds and represent for all of the various “Elements” of the culture. That’s something I’m proud to say we achieved from our performing artists, Graf exhibitions, our various battles (DJ, MC, B-boy/girl, Human Beat Box, Popping/Locking) & touring schedule.

I think it is safe to say that Scribble Jam helped redefine the standard of what a Hip Hop festival could be. Although many Hip Hop festivals may have existed before us and even more have sprung up since our start, you would be hard-pressed (dare I say unable) to find one that has successful incorporated all of those elements and remain as consistent as Scribble Jam….13 years.

With all that said, we have been thinking very long and hard about this year. The requests for performances, tour dates, battle contestants, vendors, and so on have been pouring in and all wanting to know when Scribble will be this year. The answer, unfortunately, is that there will not be a Scribble Jam this year. This was by no means an easy decision. There are several reasons why we made this choice but ultimately it all comes down to basic economics…the money just isn’t there.

I think I speak for the rest of the Scribble Family when I say we weren’t doing this to get rich from it…sure the thought of that potentially happening crossed our minds…ha, but if that was what we were waiting on we probably would have quit a long time ago. We all spent countless hours putting together Scribble every year. I don’t even know how I could explain what goes in to making it happen. Personally it had become a year round commitment for me and I was fine with that because I love doing the event and the feedback from the fans and the artists is inspirational and vastly appreciated. However, with the current status of the economy, which effects everything from people being able to afford an event like this to the lack of corporate sponsorships, we feel it’s best for us to take some time to regroup, refocus and reassess the future of Scribble Jam.

I want to thank everyone who has ever supported the event in any way; the fans, competitors, artists, vendors, sponsors, DVD buyers, and so on. You are the reason why this incredible event could last for 13 years!!!

We’ll keep you posted on our website and myspace page with any updates for our future plans as well as the 2008 DVD. Definitely hit up either of those with your comments, suggestions, feedback, and all that. Peace

Sasquatch Sighting in Ohio

post-463-1187845023.jpg

My homie and crewmate from Portland, Sasquatch, was in Ohio for a week or so for… Scribble…bombing…bbqing..discussions about falling in and out of love at inopportune times…discussions about the need for more classy behavior in graffiti… discussions about the worldwide onslaught of condos(Portland and Spain are getting gentrified)…discussions the overuse of u-locks in fights in Portland by hipsters at artshows….his conclusion…
Pluto has left the universe, and we are all thrown off by it.
Dood was hella likable…

After googling him, I found that even the anti-graffiti forces have a soft spot for him according to this Portland Tribune Article:

Tribune: Have you ever met one face to face?

Gibbar: I have. Most of the time they don’t know who I am. Last month one of the Sasquatch (a tagger gang) had an art showing in Northeast Portland where he had done stencils and had spray-painted them on paper. He was having a showing at a boutique up there. I just went to see him and visited a little bit.

Tribune: Why did you do that?

Gibbar: I’d like to think in the long run it pays to know your enemy.

Tribune: How did you know he was a tagger?

Gibbar: He advertised his own show by putting up posters that said there’s a Sasquatch art show.

Tribune: Couldn’t he have been arrested?

Gibbar: That’s an excellent question. The only way a tagger can actually be arrested for tagging in this town is if they’re caught in the act. I should add that he was wearing a fake mustache at the show.

Tribune: And the reason for the mustache was what, exactly?

Gibbar: I think he wanted to maintain some element of anonymity. The man is guilty of a tremendous amount of property crime, but I don’t think he understands the law.

Tribune: Some people consider graffiti an art form. Has there ever been a tag you found hard to remove?

Gibbar: In my two years here, having removed thousands and thousands of tags, there are only two tags I really felt bad about. One was an out-of-town guy and the other was a Sasquatch tag. It was really nice. They spent a great deal of time on it. But 99 percent of the art is weak and the work of toys, which is graffiti slang for not very good. For us it’s all day, every day. We’re way beyond being art critics at this point.

Scribble Jam Flicks; Zero Namechecks El Jesus In Freestyle

stayscrib.jpg

2007 Scribble Jam happened this weekend. And for the first time in some time, I wasn’t there.
And am very happy because of it. If they would build a hotel with a pool adjacent to Annie’s, I would possibly go. But I am too old and miserable to stand around and listen to whiney white people making homoerotic insults that illustrate an intense sexual repression during the mc battle..

The graffiti is usually good though. I found these photos of IOK’s wall at America’s Largest Hip Hop Festival.
arelscrib.jpg

Zerostar also didn’t go to Scribble. He stayed at home, and played racketball.(True Story!)
When not playing sports, he recorded some freestyles. One is over DJ Przm’s instrumental that was originally used for Copywrite’s song Ten Times. The other is over Blueprint’s Lo-Fi Funk. In that Freestyle, he claims to use that El Jesus. Not sure what drug that is. But just when I thought everyone came to their senses and realized rappers and indie rockers have nothing in common, and have no business hanging out with each other, Zero suprised me.

MP3: Zero-Ten Times Freestyle
MP3: Zero-Lo Fi Funk Freestyle.

Graffithly from the Cincy Channels, and Scribble Jam 2006

Donewaiting.com’s Friendship Farm don’t cotton 100 percent to naughty natured vandals that are down wit’ OPP (or PBJ). However, the graffiti in this video is pretty harmless and the PBJ involvement is somewhat anon.

The footage is from my friends at Better Days, makers of a graffiti dvd series that documents work from all over the great United States with a strong focus on Ohioians.

This installment showcases pieces in the Cincy channels and Scribble Jam 2006.

The channels are a endless concrete playground for writers who don’t mind jumping over a huge sewage stream and are content with giving beers to homeless crackheads to pacify harassment and snitching. (The upside of the breaking the bums off with booze is they protect your burners sometimes. Even derelicts have their loyalties!!)

This Better Days video also has footage of Scribble Jam 2006, America’s largest Hip Hop festival. Scribble highlights included are an IOK production paying homage to the Nasty Nati’s huslter spirit by making a chopped and screwed bootleg Gucci pattern out of the Reds logo as well as an illustration heavy TSC wall, some straight up TKO heat and a production by the DROIDS that recreated pieces by deceased, and well-loved Toledo writer HEIST.

Pretty fresh.
And only bums livers and the colorblind are harmed here.

Disclaimer: Donewaiting doesn’t condone the use of other people’s property for art or vandalism unless it involves Adult Swim.
