Tuesday: Love Culture @ Skully’s
03.08.10 • by Chip Midnight

It seems as if there was any band made for the MySpace (or Hot Topic – if they had one) record label, it would be Love Culture, our very own shoegazer-obsessed, Smashing Pumpkins/Kill Hannah-influenced band of pseudo-goths.

Aquamarine, the seven-song EP released in January and available to download for FREE, is not something you’d typically expect to come out of the Columbus music scene. In a city that is recognized by national press for it’s lo-fi/shitgaze sound, Love Culture in the antithesis of what we’ve allowed to pass as “good” music for the past decade which means, of course, they stand no chance unless they move to a more supportive city like Chicago, L.A., or New York.

Silversun Pickups tonight (update: at Dirty Frank’s last night)

The last time Silversun Pickups came to town was for the 2007 edition of CD101’s Summerfest (my favorite in recent memory). The band slayed. I remember being amazed at how Brian Aubert’s gigantic guitar sound filled the pavilion to the brim. All for $5.

At $30, tonight’s show is pricier (tickets still available), but I imagine the new songs will translate just as well live since the formula didn’t change a whole lot from Carnavas to Swoon. Which is fine by me.

Here’s a recent video of the band performing “Panic Switch” unplugged.

Apparently the band also enjoyed some Dirty Frank’s dogs last night…

3 bands + 5 bones = Good deal in bad economy
12.02.08 • by Chip Midnight

Say what you will about CD101 but they do bring great deals to their listeners (and even their non-listeners) in Columbus. A couple of upcoming $5 low dough shows – particularly nice in this thing they’re calling a recession – featuring some major label bands and a couple of up-and-comers.

Wednesday night’s show at The Basement (391 Neil Ave.) features The Duke Spirit, Eulogies, and The Black Fortys and while it won’t be as wall-to-wall packed as this week’s Fallout Boy show, expect a great turnout.

Eulogies are fronted by Peter Walker who co-owns Dangerbird Records, the label responsible for Silversun Pickups, Sea Wolf, and the new Dears record among others (how’s that for indie cred?) and the band will be making their second Columbus appearance in a week having opened for Darker My Love last Wednesday at The Summit.

Peter answered some questions I sent him the other night via e-mail. Check ‘em out – as well as a Eulogies video – after the jump.
