Jaytram plays drums in Yeasayer and Sinkane. He can turn anything into a drum set. He’s also an amazing DJ and a great dancer. Below is a link for his latest mix. It’s appropriate for any time of the year (not just late Summer on a rainy day).
M.I.A. boasts a miltant fashionista political agenda. It’s pretty cool but, after three records, the only things gathered from her guerrilla musical musings are an attachment to flashy neon clothing and marrying a rich dude. Historically, struggle has yielded a lot of creative and amazing art. A notable one being the Black American struggle which has lead to… well… The current state of the music. Watching a Sudanese woman rap “I want to sing for freedom/I want to sing for Love” in a thoub and dunks is incredible. We’ve come a long way. I guess some dope shit is surfacing out of the current state of affairs in Sudan.

Columbus ex-pat and sometimey DW blogger Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane plays in Yeasayer. Before that he had stints with Caribou, Of Montreal and Born Ruffians.
He has made his hometown proud a zillion times over.
This time around Sinkane takes us on an audio trip to his other and original home Sudan, Africa with this eclectic mix created for Okay Africa’s Africa In Your Earbuds Series.
James “Jimi” Payne
For the past three years I have lived in the Monster House, a DIY punk house in Columbus, Ohio. I co-founded the Monster House with Pat Crann, Austin Eilbeck, Ryan Eilbeck, Jeff Love, Kristina Markey, Matt O’Conke, Joe Scarbro, Dylan Taylor-Lehman, and Nick Wong. A few weeks ago the last three original roommates – besides me – left. And, as of this week, I’m moving out as well. A group of our friends still living at the Monster plan to continue hosting shows and events. On October 8th, Apache Dropout, Landlord, Reverse The Curse, and Cody Troyan are performing there.
After “the jump” is a list of every performer who occasioned the “stage” at the Monster House in the last three years. 400 different performers have played over 150 shows booked by over 20 promoters. The list is representative of the Columbus punk scene as well as the national DIY touring circuit from 2007-10.
More than 30 people paid rent at the house during this time span.

Having seen Yeasayer a couple of times before, I knew what to expect to a certain degree. The words I would use are similar to those which describe their sound: psychedelic, heart-thumping rock music that teeters on the brink of insanity. This mood they create in their live set has to be part of the reason they’re so well liked by other current mega-indie acts like MGMT and Vampire Weekend. It’s music that makes you dance, drink, take drugs (or feel like you have)… a real experience. A performance that makes my imagination wander is the real test to how remarkable a band is live. Makes it easy to see why their music videos always seem to have escaped from a third dimension.
Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of the performance was Ahmed Gallab’s (aka Sinkane) public allegiance to the city of Columbus. Not only did he step back on stage before the encore and talk about his time spent here, but he kicked off their last song by stating “This is all for Daymon Dodson.” People like Ahmed are why I love the Columbus music community.
MP3: Yeasayer – O.N.E.
Tonight marks the return of Brooklyn-based Yeasayer (and our friend Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane). It’s been over a year since their last show at Skully’s, but between a new record, constant touring of the world and television appearances, this comes as no surprise.
Odd Blood has received acclaim from multiple reviewers across the US and UK since February and supplied the demand of fans globally, including appearances at prominent festivals like Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, Reading and Latitude. Last month they also released new single “Madder Red,” which features yet another typically strange Yeasayer video. Check it out above.
Opening the show will be Georgian-based Washed Out (stage alias of Ernest Greene), whose chillwave sound has been gaining exposure over the last year. The Newport Music Hall will open its doors at 7pm.
Duffy note: We’re really excited that Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane aka currently performing with Yeasayer aka the coolest dude you’ll never be is going to be blogging for us.
I’ve posted one of these videos before on the Sinkane blog but I think it deserves another post.
