December 5 at Skully’s: Rock Potluck 2009
11.16.09 • by Adriana Mundy

rockpotluckposter

Picture this. You’re a musician. You’re in a local band that’s created a steady fan base. You want to test the waters of your talent, so you accept a challenge that matches you randomly with four other people to form a band. You then have 8 hours to come up with two original songs and one cover with these people whose musical limitations are potentially a mystery. Following the minimal time spent conjuring up and practicing these songs, you must perform them in front of a full audience of your Columbus peers. Oh, and on top of all that, this year you get filmed every step of the way. Nervousness ensues, the pressure’s on. Welcome to the Rock Potluck of ’09.

In its 5th year of existence, the Potluck continues its raw artistic event, boasting a roster of 41 musicians from 41 Columbus bands. Though both the challenge and combination of personalities thrown together seem like an equation for an explosive reality TV show, there is an underlying positivity. The Potluck’s coordinator, Bobby Miller, feels that the event “helps bring the entire Columbus music community together in a very unique and supportive way. Each band creates a bond and ultimately the experience they go through and the music they make together is something really exciting to hear and watch and something they can all be proud of.” More than one band created within the event has continued to play out after the fact. Sandwitch, born in the ’03 Potluck (made up of Ron House, John Olexovitch, Brett Burleson, Bobby Silver and Zac Szymusiak) has put out a 7”, played at last year’s SXSW and will soon be releasing a full-length record on Columbus Discount Records. Interview: Wye Oak
10.12.09 • by Chip Midnight

wyeoak_band

Donewaiting presents Blitzen Trapper and Wye Oak at Skully’s on Tuesday, October 13. More info can be found here.

Before the interview begins, some obligatory praise for Wye Oak’s sophomore release, The Knot (listen to it, in full, at the end of the interview). Admittedly I was relatively unfamiliar with the duo (Jenn Wasner – guitars/vocals, Andy Stack – drums, keyboards) other than checking out a couple of MP3s from If Children that we posted last year on the site. That being said, within the first 5 minutes of The Knot, I emailed the duo’s publicist at Merge Records and said something to the effect of “Is it possible to fall in love with an entire CD before the second song has even ended? If so, I’ll drop to one knee and propose to Wye Oak on the spot.”

MP3: “Take It In”

The Knot opens with the spacey “Milk and Honey” – the subtle effects-pedal-drenched guitar hanging in the background (the guitar playing – and the song itself – remind me a lot of Ashland’s Bel Auburn). It’s the first – and last – song that Stack will provide lead vocals on on the CD. The rest of the CD works on the ebb and flow of slow to loud, loud to soft that bands that Wye Oak have compared to are so proficient in (Yo La Tengo, My Morning Jacket, The Spinanes). It’s a beautiful sounding, at times loud and chaotic, CD and, as mentioned before, one that knocked me out from the get-go.

A few weeks into a tour with Blitzen Trapper, I sent Wye Oak some questions via email hoping they’d have internet access somewhere along the way. They did and the following are Jenn’s answers to the questions I sent.

Have you found that touring with a band like Blitzen Trapper – a band with critical buzz – has led to a “fan” buzz? Have you been pleasently surprised with the attendance at shows so far on the tour or have you played to smaller crowds than expected?

The shows with BT have been so excellent! It’s always interesting to play to audiences that aren’t necessarily there to see you. It puts you in a position where you have to try to win people over, and that really provides a good bit of energy and excitement, especially when you’ve been playing shows for weeks and weeks. It’s always really satisfying when you can get a good response out of an audience that’s never heard your music before. (more…)

blitzen

This should be a great one. Blitzen Trapper’s Furr (Sub Pop) was one of my favorites from last year, and the Portland band has a new EP, Black River Killer, out on Oct. 6 (eponymous mp3 below). Songwriter Eric Earley says here that the EP is completely separate from Blitzen Trapper’s upcoming album. A snippet:

So there’s been alot of questioning about the songs on the BRK EP, thought i’d do some explaining… Silver Moon is near four years old, recorded around three times in differing formats, Preacher’s has about the same timeframe, Black Rock and Shoulder are older dating back to the old house on 69th and Long where garmonbozia was recorded in ‘02 and ‘03 roughly. Big Black Bird was originally an instrumental track recorded at the 69th house for the soundtrack to a film we made entitled Who is Manfred Milner? or something like that, it ran during the final credits, the complete soundtrack i’ve never released, around the time of Furr or previous I recorded the version you now hear adding lyrics and other notable soundz… The BRKiller EP is in no way a linear follow up to Furr and is in no way exemplary of the new record which I’m working on and of which i’ve only spoken of in a few interviews and that mostly inaccurate and amusingly misleading.

That’d be a good show by itself, but Merge Records’ Wye Oak is on this Donewaiting/BenCo bill, too. I’ll let Chip tell you more about them soon…

We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away for this show, too. To enter, send a blank e-mail with the subject title BLITZEN OAK to contest@donewaiting.com. A winner will be randomly chosen on Oct. 12. And, of course, you can always purchase tickets in advance.

Divison Day/Bad Veins @ Skully’s (9.16)
09.15.09 • by Chip Midnight

Cincy’s Bad Veins – on paper – appear to be a bedroom/studio project for Benjamin Davis (vox/gtrs/keys) and Sebastien Schultz (drums), but the duo has been wowing audiences live with the help of a 1973 reel-to-reel tape player named Irene that augments the sound and fills in where other band members are missing. Their self-titled debut (released in July) is an experimental indie pop album that sounds a bit like Brandon Flowers (Killers) fronting a Sparklehorse/Apples in Stereo/Longwave mash-up.

MP3: Bad Veins – “Gold and Warm”

Division Day, meanwhile, is a veteran of the first (and, to date, only) Donewaiting SXSW day party, performing in 2008 alongside El Jesus de Magico, Catfish Haven, Goes Cube, AA Bondy, Joseph Arthur, Midgetmen, and Spinto Band. Much like the Chicago-by-way-of-Columbus band the Loyal Divide, Division Day’s music has made a pretty significant transformation from a Granddaddy/Silversun Pickups-style indie-rock to something darker and more synthetic sounding (think: Radiohead + Nine Inch Nails – Trent Reznor’s anger).

Phantods: Revival
06.22.09 • by Kirk Kline

MP3: Revival by Phantods

Phantods, one of the hardest working bands in Columbus, celebrate the release of their new EP “Revival” on July 3rd at Skully’s Music-Diner with Mrs. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys. I feel like Phantods are a band that I don’t go out enough for and if you haven’t caught them, now is your opportunity. Creepy, melodic and super tight, they were kind enough to give me an mp3 to share so download the track “Revival” and tell me it isn’t one of the coolest tracks you’ve heard in a while…dare I say it’s a song I can’t stop listening to?

Tonight: The Veronicas @ Skully’s
05.12.09 • by Chip Midnight

The Veronicas – Untouched

The Veronicas = ((Avril x 2) + Veruca Salt) + Enuff Z’Nuff drummer / Teen Disney

Originally marketed to a tween demographic, the twin sisters (Jessica and Lisa) that make up the Aussie pop-rock band The Veronicas have entered that awkward phase that Christina Aguilera went through after leaving Disney to start her solo career. They are good looking young women who appeal as much to guys in their 30’s as they do kids in their teens. And while it’s the kids who have their parents money to spend on merch, it’s the older audience that will take The Veronicas music seriously so the band has been touring rock clubs for the last couple of years rather than doing things like open for Miley Cyrus or The Jonas Brothers.

The Veronicas may tend to lean a little bit too much to the electro-pop (re: studio trickery) for my tastes but their more rocking songs do pack some Veruca Salt-like punch. And, while I realize he’s just a hired gun, it makes me happy to see Vik Foxx (Enuff Z’Nuff, Vince Neil Band, Warrant) as a member of the touring band.

Benco presents: The Veronicas with Pretty Reckless, The Love Willows / Skully’s Music Diner / $15 day of show / Doors at 7pm. More info here.

Sunday: The Dears/Great Northern/Eulogies (Skully’s)
05.08.09 • by Chip Midnight

YouTube Preview Image

March 2004 – Saw The Dears at SXSW. My first year there, my first experience with the band. Somebody said, before we saw them, that they are like “The Smiths meet Pink Floyd”. We all leave Emo’s impressed.

March 2006 (I think) – Make it a point to see The Dears at SXSW again even though they are playing my least favorite club. They aren’t scheduled to go on until 1am but I figure I’ll tough it out. They start soundchecking about 5 ’til 1 and continue on for about 10 minutes. Then they proceed to open with an instrumental that felt like it lasted another 10 minutes. I left, totally disappointed.

Sunday, May 10, 2009 – I feel like The Dears owe me one. This is their chance to make it up and, truthfully, I’m not too worried. The new CD, Missles, is a good one even though it originally was supposed to be a Murray Lightburn solo CD from what I’ve read.

Great Northern (read my fresh-off-the-presses interview with them) and Eulogies (read my Dec.’08 interview) open the EARLY show at Skully’s (doors at 6:30, show done around 10pm).

The Doggpound Gangstaz @ Skullys Tomorrow
05.01.09 • by Wes Flexner

YouTube Preview Image

The above video is for New York, New York by the Dogg Pound Gangstaz. THis video used to make me so mad. It was filmed during the height of the East Coast West Coast conflict. Basically Deathow DPG comes through NYC and crushes. At the time, I was like….how dare these permed out West Coast cats comes thru and knock our buildings down?
Someone in New York shot at DPGz during the video shoot.
Mobb Deep, CNN, & Tragedy dropped a white label L.A.L.A.// which I copped immeadetly.
The irony of these records is that the Crip. lo-lo dropping DPGz made a lyrical diss record, and the New York Muslim cats made a thug record.

Even dumber that some of us in Ohio were bothered by West Coast rappers telling New Yorkers to get off their high-horse.

DPG will be at Skullys tomorrow.

The Black Keys Last Night
04.28.09 • by Wes Flexner

042809_001811
(Pat Carney of Drummer & Chris Lutsko of the Unholy Two of pose for a picture after the Black Keys show at Skullys. I lied to them and said it was for a men of Ohio indie rock calender that the proceeds would benefit upcoming victims of the Swine Flu. Jared Phillips declined to be in the nonexistant calender.)

I had to work before the show so I didn’t get a chance to get to see the opening act. I work at Magnolia Thunderpussy next to Skullys. So what I did observe was a line that started at 4pm which wrapped well past the Milk Bar and all the way down 5th.
I think every single person that picked up free ticket showed up.
Outside of a club rap show, I don’t think I have seen this much excitement around one band.
Ohio loves TBK.
I got there around 945 right when the Black Keys went on. Seeing a band as large as the Keys in a small venue like this is always amazing. Doods busted out “10 Am Automatic”, “Strange Times” & “Psycotic Girl”.
I don’t recall every song cause I spent the bulk of my time trying to convince girls to buy both DJ Detox and I drinks.
I would tell them Detox was sad because it was his birthday and no one remembered it. Then the girls would ask him about it.
He would tell them he didn’t know what the fuck they were talking about, that was I was lieing to them and look bewildered.
For some reason the girls would still buy us drinks.
After getting the drinks, the next move was trying to ditch the girls which was difficult because the room was so packed and no one wants to move out of the way when they are watching their favorite band.
So you then would just have to act like the conversation never happened.
Jolly goodtime. Amusing oneself while The Black Keys play loudly in an esctatic, intimate setting is perhaps the best way to spend an evening.
Pat shot the shit with us for awhile but declined going to Hendocs with us because the engine of his car had just exploded so he needed to get to Akron.

Diplo in Columbus Review
04.24.09 • by Wes Flexner

null
800 people paid 12-20 dollars to see Diplo in Columbus,Ohio.
For good reason. He invented anything that matters currently in the world of dancing. I mean…do I need to point out how before Diplo it was either James Brown or staying home because nerds wanted to play drum n bass?
I mean he made all of us ex-backpackers or hardcore kids into club goers kinda.
Anyway, after the jump I will recap the show.

Dear Diplo,

I have been an avid fan of you for many years now. I too like manatee’s. The Columbus Zoo has a really nice manatee exhibit.
I suggest you have Schoolboy take you there in Skully’s PT Cruiser before the show.

But, as you may guessed, I am not writing you to discuss zoology.

I am writing to request that you play “Santana’s Town” by the Harlem Diplomats or “I Used to Get it in Ohio” by Killer Camron Giles.

By no means am I unfamilar with your oeuvre.
I consider you to be an intuitive socialogist that operates well above what many call hipster because you are constantly honing in on the fun within organic cultures and streamling them in a manner that makes sense and doesn’t seem forced.
