Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo has a solo album coming out on March 20 via Matador Records. Tour dates coming soon.

Thurston Moore’s solo album was my favorite of 2011. Will Lee make it onto my 2012 list? If this first song is any indication of the whole album, the magic Oasis-brand eightball says DEFINITELY MAYBE.

The weekend’s not over until the alarm clock goes off on Monday morning. It’s been a weekend full of great music in Columbus and Sunday night finds Albany, NY’s Severe Severe bringing their paranoid, art-rock sounds to the cozy confines of The Treehouse.

The trio’s latest release, Break Up the Dance, was released June 3 and you’ll hear lots of early ’80s new wave/post-punk in the Joy Division/The Cure/Wire/Sonic Youth-influenced music.

DJ Fitzgerald (St. Moses the Black) is opening the show with a solo set around 10 and Severe Severe should be on around 11.

Ain’t gonna lie – when I heard Beck was producing the new Thurston Moore solo album I was skeptical. Love the first half of Beck’s career WITH MY LIFE but the second half has left me bruised and betrayed.

But then…….!!!!! I heard this first song and all worries vanished. “Benediction” is pure bliss and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. Demolished Thoughts comes out May 24 via Matador on 2XLP/digital/CD.

Special Note to Sonic Youth non-fans: Give this a listen. Don’t worry, your ears won’t “hurt” due to the “crazy feedback” and “experimental noise.” Seriously, download it twice. I wish I could download this right inside your ear holes for you.

Might as well just set up a tent in Prospect Park this week. Friday night we saw The Low Anthem and The Swell Season kill it, and Saturday was one of the best Sonic Youth shows I’ve ever seen. Here’s some video evidence:

Prospect Park and Celebrate Brooklyn close out their great season with some awesome hitters: tomorrow night is Dead Weather, Thursday is Metric with Holly Miranda and Joan as Policewoman (free), and Saturday is Sharon Jones and The Budos Band (also free). I’ll be at every one of them.

Sonic Youth Leaves Geffen Records

Sonic Youth has left Geffen. Kinda crazy, right? Makes sense though, in the long run a band like SY can pull off whatever they want either doing it themselves or on a real indie label.
