Photos: Summerland Tour (7/10/12)

I grossly underestimated the number of 30-somethings who work hard but party harder and who really, really like their mid-90s alt-radio-rock. This underestimation caused me to miss Marcy Playground’s entire set as I stood in line with my 30-something cousin who was attending only his second ever concert.

We still made it in time to see LIT (surprisingly modern sounding), Gin Blossoms (looking old but with probably the most recognizable set of songs of the night), Sugar Ray (way more entertaining than expected) and Everclear (Art’s voice was not up to par on this particular night and while musically my favorite, on the other hand they were also the most disappointing).

Tuesday: Summerland Tour at the LC (Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, LIT, Marcy Playground)

A week ago it was the early ’90s hair metal festival (America Rocks) at the Alrosa. This week it’s the mid-90s alt-radio rock festival (Summerland Tour) at the LC (outdoors).

Headlined by Everclear (who, like a majority of the bands on the America Rocks tour, has only one original member, lead singer – Art Alexakis) and Sugar Ray, the undercard on this bill is stacked with bands that had one or two hits played to death (due to requests, undoubtedly) by CD101 (Marcy Playground – “Sex and Candy”; LIT – “My Own Worst Enemy; Gin Blossoms – “Found Out About You”, “Hey Jealousy”).

Gates at the LC open for this show at 6pm. General admission (lawn) tickets are $15. If you’re a big spender (ha … $30 … that’s just $2 more than the general admission America Rocks tickets were!), you can buy a seat down in the pit in front of the stage.
