Tim Easton’s been representing Columbus at SXSW for many, many years. While the traveling songwriter hasn’t called Columbus his permanent home in quite a while (currently he lives outside of Joshua Tree, California), we’ll still happily claim him as one of our own.

Those of you attending SXSW this year will have plenty of opportunities to hear material from Easton’s latest record, Beat the Band, which won’t hit stores and on-line retailers until March 29. The singer will be appearing numerous times with his backing band, The Freelan Barons, featuring Mark Stepro (drums, Ben Kweller) and Aaron Lee Tasjan (guitar & piano, Madison Square Gardeners) and Alex Livingstone (bass, Grand Champeen) throughout this week in Austin with plans of hitting the road this summer.

Stumbled into the Rumba Cafe a little past start time for the Happy Hour show last night, ready to bid a long work week adieu. I was more than pleasantly surprised by Tom Evanchuck’s opening set of Delta-style blues/folk. If I understood correct, the singer’s name was Tom and the drummer’s last name was Evanchuck and they merged the two together to name the band.

Call it “being in the moment”, but given the time of day, the $1.50 PBR drafts, the respect the audience was giving the duo, the intimacy of the Rumba Cafe, I was having SXSW flashbacks. It’s always great to step into a club with no expectations and be blown away as I was last night.

While I’m kicking myself for not picking up a copy of the live album (Live Birth) Tom was promoting from the stage just before the set ended, both that album and a full-length (Tom) are available digitally on iTunes and Amazon. Remember that “Buy a $20 Amazon gift card for $10″ promotion running rampant on the internet a week ago? Yep, I’ll be spending my on Evanchuck’s music today.

Though never among the elite artists to be named a “Band to Watch” in her hometown, Lydia Loveless still has managed to attract the attention of the Americana label Bloodshot Records who announced today that they have signed the 20-year-old country singer to a roster that includes artists such as Justin Townes Earle, Waco Brothers, Eddie Spaghetti and The Bottle Rockets.

Loveless is currently working on her Bloodshot debut, due out this fall. She says she prefers a raw sound and has always preferred rock n’ roll to country so expect the new album to rock a little more than 2010′s Only Man. “The attitude is still country but it’s definitely less fake country,” Loveless says.

Among the first order of business, Loveless will be performing on February 20th at
North Star Bar in Philadelphia, PA at Bloodshot’s Philly Brew Bash, alongside Eddie Spaghetti, Whitey Morgan and the 78′s and Jon Langford. Then, in March, she’ll head to Austin to perform at Bloodshot’s legendary SXSW party at the Yard Dog Gallery.

And just to show that she’s not all country, here’s a video of Loveless and band performing a cover of Def Leppard’s “Hysteria”.

Cate Le Bon

Despite my confusion about whether I woke up in Columbus or Austin on Saturday morning, I triumphantly braved the cold and put in a good eleven hours of music listening/show-navigating on my last day of SXSW. My day began with a charming interview with the lovely Cate Le Bon (check back for full interview soon) and then took me to the MOG party where I camped out at for a number of hours. While there I caught performances by Dum Dum Girls, Demolished Thought (again sans Andrew WK), Freelance Whales, Broken Bells, The Antlers and The Black Keys.

Completely ignore the fact that I’m an Ohioan for one moment as I crown The Black Keys with the best performance of the party, hands down. Broken Bells was entertaining, but didn’t stray too far from what I might expect from a Shins follow-up of Australia.

Grammatics

After spending a bit too much time enjoying a warm restaurant and food, I caught a sliver of Leeds-based Grammatics at The Phoenix (the most beautiful club I’ve entered in Austin). Cate Le Bon was next on my list as she played the Moshi Moshi party at Latitude 30. Her performance clinched my already substantially positive opinion of her music.

Crayon Fields

I quickly split after her set to catch the tail end of The Middle East, where they managed to pulverize their final song (“Blood”) in an epic Arcade Fire-style. My SXSW experience ended with another Aussie act, Crayon Fields, whose genuinely delightful sound gave me something to hum all the way back to Columbus.

Though my day actually began at a reasonable hour, my involvement in seeing any music didn’t begin until late afternoon on Friday. I was able to catch up with Fanfarlo at Buffalo Billiards to talk to them about their album and upcoming show in Columbus so keep your eyes peeled for that coming up quite soon.

I caught Wild Sweet Orange at Creekside Lounge who softly reminded me that I was in the south where a voice sang mysterious sounding ballads of struggle. I then popped up to a rooftop to see Andrew WK making his crowd go crazy with his strain of rock and roll fever.

Fanfarlo at The Ale House

The Fader Fort provided my favorite non-previously-listened-to band of the day, Fools Gold. Their afro-pop kept your feet tapping and the beverage line from being intolerable. (I was unaware that ex-Sun member Brad Caulkin also played in this band before arriving to see them.) Frightened Rabbit was up next and I left a few songs in due to a quality of sound that was not conducive to my patience. The Freelance Whales, however, played an amazing set at the Paste party with Local Natives directly after. Both bands really made me like the respective records more, and Local Natives upped the ante by adding members of Fools Gold to the end of their set.

The Billboard Bungalow was my next stop to see what Yacht was all about, and I was left unsatisfied. It was like a dance party where you wait the whole night to hear the song you requested and it’s never played. Kudos to their energy and stage presence, but next time they should consider playing their hit. I was lucky enough to find a creative entry to the Fanfarlo show at The Ale House, which was even better than the first time because there were about 400 less people and I was 25 yards closer to the stage. I split in just enough time to catch most of The Drums‘ set at Latitude and am certainly pleased because of it. Having only a six-song EP out, they managed to play a stronger set than bands I’ve seen with multiple albums and years of playing together.

I must say that in spite of my lack of exposure to the punk world, seeing Demolished Thoughts close out the night was rather legendary. The supergroup was made up of Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Awesome Allison, Don Fleming and a guest bassist (as Andrew WK was a no show).

Quite the journey through musical diversity tonight, if I do say so myself. But hey, that’s part of the beauty of SXSW right?

I started the day at Emo’s, where I caught Summer Cats (who were a throwback to some angsty teen days) and Tobacco (who are not meant to be seen in the middle of a day in a tent.) I next checked out Joe Pug at the Paste showcase, where he charmed the pants off the crowd with his endearing personality and honest music. At the Creekside Lounge patio, I luckily caught Casiokids who gave the most upbeat and energetic show of the day, complete with odd hand gestures in sync with their beats. Inside, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons (pictured above) were my surprise new favorite of the day with a sound comprised of equal parts Tom Petty and serious indie rock.

Everyone Was In The French Resistance… Now was a bit of a let down so I took off in search of food. After a bit of a break, I saw The Howlies and it was then and there that I caved and bought a wristband for easier access to showcases. Good thing, too, because after catching a lively set by Skybox, I waited for 35 minutes and was able to see Fanfarlo at the outdoor Paste party. Though at this point it was 11pm, I didn’t give into exhaustion and kept wandering in time to come across Banda de Touristas, who did some serious rocking out. My night ended quite perfectly with an amazing set by The Morning Benders, despite a delay in sound issues and a broken guitar string on the first song. All in all, I’m pleased with day one and just hope I can keep this energy up for the next three days!
