Super group (?) to debut at SXSW

How the hell do these people get together to form a band? I mean, I guess you can play connect the dots to a certain extent – Bassist Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and guitarist James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) co-own a studio. And Iha undoubtedly is a Cheap Trick fan which is where drummer Bun E. Carlos enters the equation. But, prey tell, who invited Taylor Hanson to the party?

Eh, whatever.

This group (is it “super”?) is calling themselves Tinted Windows and will play at Pangaea on March 20 in Austin during SXSW week.

The Damnwells: new CD, interview, SXSW plans

thedamnwells_onelastcenturyIt’s a big day for The Damnwells. At 9 a.m., the band will release it’s third full-length CD, One Last Century, exclusively through Paste Magazine’s website. Fans of the band’s first two releases will want to download the new CD for tracks like “55 Pictures”, “Bastards of Midnight” and “Down with the Ship” while those who just recently discovered the band due to their inclusion on the Chaos Theory soundtrack will undoubtedly fall in love with “Jesus Could Be Right”, “Closer”, and “WWXII”.

My personal favorite is “Like It Is”, which Alex first debuted in a YouTube video accompanied by his wife Angela on backing vocals. As you listen to it, just imagine the Dixie Chicks providing backing vocals, banjo, and violin.

MP3: “Like It Is”

On the eve of the virtual release, I gave Alex a call at his (temporary) home in Iowa where he is attending The University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop. The following is our close-to-40-minute conversation.

MP3: Interview with Alex Dezen

And in SXSW news, Alex revealed that The Damnwells will play an unofficial day party hosted by September Gurl, Organic Entertainment, and Ripple Entertainment on March 18 at Threadgills (South Store).  More info as we get it.

Now get to downloading One Last Century. (available after 9 a.m.)

Van Halen … back on?

A little birdie told us this morning that the Van Halen tour (was it ever actually “officially” canceled?) is back on.

But they’re still not playing SXSW. And neither is Led Zeppelin. Or Radiohead.

The Judy’s reunite for Austin Music Awards

The Austin Chronicle recently published this article about Houston/Pearland group The Judy’s, who plan to reunite for a show during SXSW at the Austin Music Awards on March 12.

Here’s more info:

For those too young to remember, the Pearland-based trio was a pivotal part of Austin’s original punk scene, forging its own genre between minimal New Wave and post-punk Dadaism.

“That’s where it all started for me,” recalls frontman David Bean. “I was in a high school summer program [in Austin] in 1979, put on by the National Science Foundation, and I snuck into Raul’s. That was the first time I realized I could play in clubs and be part of a scene.”

The Judy’s performed a private benefit party in 2004, but other than that the group hadn’t played together since the Raul’s reunion at Liberty Lunch, 10 years before. The Judy’s recently recorded a new song together, a commissioned theme for Japanese animé series Sgt. Frog, while Wasted Talent Records reissued expanded editions of the trio’s first two albums, 1981′s Washarama and 1985′s Moo.

A personal story about The Judy’s:

When I was a sophomore in high school, The Judy’s were playing Fort Worth and a couple of my friends and I skipped out of classes to go see them at TCU. One friend had to go cash his check from mowing lawns and on the way, some guys started screwing with us by stopping quick in front of us and flipping us off, etc. As it turned out, our friend in the passenger seat was flipping them off back and it pissed the guys off. We were total suburban kids (before I even knew what a freggin’ suburb was) and I personally had never been in a fight and rarely in that part of town.

Anyway, we tried to outrun them once we figured out they wanted to fight. They caught us at a light, jumped out, and hit both of my friends, breaking the driver’s sunglasses into the flesh around his eyes (which bled like you’d imagine it would). Needless to say, we didn’t make it to see The Judy’s–and got popped by all of our parents for skipping school. Every time I hear The Judy’s or listen to “Moo,” I have relatively fond memories. If you have never heard “Grass Is Greener” I suggest checking it out–it’s a pretty funny song (“Johnny is a boy / who wants to be a girl…”).

Tickets for the Austin Music Awards are $15 at Austin’s Waterloo Records (or $20 at the door). More information on this very original Texas band, including how to order the reissued albums, can be found at www.wastedtalentrecords.com. Houstonist music editor Eric Wilson posted a great interview with Jeff Walton of The Judy’s here.

SXSW Band Profile: Hopewell

Hopewell

MP3: Afterglow
MP3: All Angels Road
MP3: Monolith
MP3: Calcutta
MP3: Trumpet for a Lung

How many times have you performed at SXSW?
Hopewell has performed 4 times so far. This will be our 5th.

If you’ve performed at SXSW, what’s your best memory of the festival?
Last year our bass player leapt off stage into one of those bouncy inflatable cages full of children and then ran into the barbershop that was hosting the day party and got a free SXSW mohawk. One year I came to riding a miniature train around a park on the outskirts of Austin with a nice girl I didn’t really know.

Share one thing that you know about Austin (a fact, bit of trivia, etc.) without using Google for help.
The bats! Bats live in tunnels beneath the city, ready to suck the blood out of already bloodless music industry insiders.

Shiner Bock or Lonestar?
Tito’s vodka and green tea.

Daniel Johnston – Austin legend? Any interest in seeing him perform this year?
He exists alright. More so than you or I. If I can I will go see him.

Which statement best summarizes this year’s experience?

  • Play as many shows as possible
  • See as many bands as possible
  • Hook up and party with friends
  • Play a show or two and get out of town

Comments about previous question:
SXSW is the time when we get to see all of our friends – it’s always like a class reunion or something. We like to play a lot because it keep us out of trouble, but the real reason we make the trek is to hang with old friends and escape the doldrums of Brooklyn’s winter.

For those not familiar with your music, what bands have others said you sound like?
Can, Jane’s Addiction, The Flaming Lips, Jesus Christ Superstar, Yoko Ono (not really, but I wish..)

Pimp your SXSWshow(s)/websites/whatever:
Our confirmed SXSW shows thus far:
March 12th – Tee Pee Records showcase SXSW with Earthless and Witch
March 13th – Birds Barbershop day party SXSW
With more up in the air as per usual.

Black Crowes no longer doing SXSW?

SonicItchMusic.com is reporting that the Black Crowes are no longer going to be performing at Stubb’s during SXSW. I’m not sure where they got that information (there are no links to any “official” news) but the date doesn’t appear on the band’s MySpace page (though, to be fair, I’m not sure if it ever did).
